MSMEs not only play a crucial role in providing large employment opportunities, at comparatively lower capital cost than large industries, but also help in the industrialization of rural and backward areas, thereby reducing regional imbalances and assuring more equitable distribution of national income and wealth. MSMEs are complementary to large industries as ancillary units and contribute enormously to the socio-economic development of India. The sector is significant to the manufacturing output, employment, and exports of the country. However, MSMEs face a number of problems which have resulted in their retarded growth. Inadequate working capital, a shortage of trained personnel, and obsolete technology are the major barriers to the growth of MSMEs in India. This present volume provides an exhaustive analytical account of the functioning of MSMEs in India. It discusses their role in the country's economy, policies, and programs of the government to promote them, and the problems faced by them in the context of globalization and liberalization of world economies.

The third chapter outlines the growth and performance of MSME in the Indian scenario, Andhra Pradesh Scenario and Guntur scenario. The fourth chapter presents the sickness of MSMEs. The fifth chapter presents in a case study on development of MSMEs in Guntur District. The sixth chapter deals with the problems of sample needs in the Guntur District. The seventh chapter deals the findings and conclusions drawn from the study, besides suggestions made to MSMEs, policy makers and financial institutions to enable them play their respective roles in resolving the various problems faced by MSMEs.

The operational range varies from independent enterprises to ancillaries, sub-contractors, and vendors engaged in catering to the needs of the markets, extending from the domestic to the global horizon. These enterprises exist in various forms, such as proprietorship, partnership, companies, or co-operatives. Though the main objectives of small enterprises are almost the same, they are defined and viewed differently in different countries. In India, prior to the enactment of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act, 2006, small industries were comprised of tiny, cottage, traditional, and village enterprises. These enterprises were fragmented across various ministries/departments of the government of India for the purpose of development schemes and concessions. In order to streamline procedures, correct discrepancies, and avoid neglect of certain sectors, the MSMED Act was enacted on June 16, 2006. This Act provides the first-ever legal framework recognizing the concept of 'enterprise' (comprising both manufacturing and service entities), defining medium enterprises, and integrating the three tiers of these enterprises, namely micro, small, and medium.
