Excerpt: ...top, it will keep straight much longer than a stick turned in a lathe. I do not know of any way, however, that one can be made which will never warp or bend. The shoe should be made of sufficient size to receive the stick, without dressing it down to go into the socket. Several trials will have to be made before they can be fitted to each other correctly. When finished it should be thoroughly tested, to see if the point of the shoe has been set in line with the center of the pole. To make this test, suspend a plumb bob from a point in a ceiling, and mark on the floor the point carried down. Fasten a string in the center of the top of the color pole and suspend it from the same point. If the point of the shoe covers the mark on the floor it is all right. Prying with a color pole should be prohibited. These remarks about the head chainman and color poles may seem extended and to deal with tiresome details, but it is exasperating to a trained man to take a good transit into the field, use care in keeping it in adjustment, and then have all of his pains go for naught, on account of a "chump" or a crooked stick. A friend of mine exhausted his patience and his supply of men, trying to find one who could do the simple act of holding a color pole plumb, and as a last resort, had one made with a shoe so heavy that a man with ordinary strength could not hold it in any other position. Sights should be equal in length if possible. None of them less than 200 feet, and of as great length as signals can be seen and understood. Hard winds and refraction make work very uncertain. Clear, cool days are the most favorable for fine running. A man may select the best transit, a well-trained head chainman, a perfect color pole, and use every...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Michigan Engineers' Annual: Containing the Proceedings of the Michigan Engineering Society for 1892 The method of laying out easement curves described in the Michigan Engineers' Annuals for 1891 and 1892 was intended for use in ordinary cases of railroad curves of moderate degrees of curvature, 'where the variations from exact mathematical precision would be so small as to be immaterial, and where extreme nicety of alignment is not necessary. I have never had occasion to use it in laying out a race track, and, in fact, hardly anticipated its application to so extreme a case. Since, however, your letter has called my attention to the matter, I think it will be found that there need be no difficulty in apply ing the general method even in this case. To do this, however, will require a little preliminary calcula tion, and it will be necessary also to always bear in mind three important practical points. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Michigan Engineers' Annual: Containing the Proceedings of the Michigan Engineering Society for 1899 Ir was with much hesitancy that I assumed the office which by a majority of your ballots, was made imperative. And now to think of giving any direction to your thoughts or plans, seems like presumption itself. I am certainly very grateful for the honor conferred, and like a boy with his pocket full of goodies belonging to another, will promise not to do so any more. At this our Tenth Annual Convention, held at the Capitol, where our first or ganization was effected, a retrospective view shows the wisdom of organization. The proceedings of other similar societies, nearly all formed since this one, evince a growing impulse toward im provement. So much is this true that. A copy of society proceed ings is received as a long-desired letter from a friend, and studied through and through, to learn what others are doing. These exchanges will in time make a useful addition to our libraries, and I recommend that they be carefully filed and bound. It is the active worker and searcher after facts, in these days, who stands foremost; and our Society, as such, and each individual member, should be no exception to the law. The duty is thrust upon us, and two words express the situation Do or die. It will not do to say we have done very well so far, and are satisfied with our attainments. The mill will never grind with the water that is past. There is room enough up higher for the energetic surveyor and engineer, and he can always be improv ing from observation, study, and the teaching or experience of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Michigan Engineers' Annual: Containing the Proceedings of the Michigan Engineering Society for 1893 My father, Thomas Forster, first a merchant in Erie, later on became an engineer, and spent a large portion of his life in river and harbor improvements, under the United States Government. The writer of this paper was educated at the Fredonia Academy and Livingston county high school, New York. Began engineering work as rodman, on the New York and Erie Railroad, in Cattaraugus county. After a time the com pany failed and the engineering department was disbanded, minus a whole season's pay. First unfortunate venture! For a time engineering enterprises were dormant. The writer. Pearsons, which occurred this rmorning at his home in Ferrysburg, Ottawa County loses one of its best-known and most remarkable citizens. The death summons had long been expected, as the venerable old gentle man had been ailing for a long time, and death came as a relief after long months of suffering from repeated paralytic strokes. Mr. Pearsons was born on Jan. 25, 1819, in Allegany County, New York, and his boyhood days were spent there and in Jefferson County. He early evinced a liking for the higher sciences and mathematics, and by arduous study and an ambi tion to succeed, reached a high pinnacle in civil engineering, and became an authority in the engineering world. He became an expert shipbuilder early in life, and for a long time was in the employ of the Northern Transportation Co., in building ships at Ogdensburg, N. Y. In those early days of lake navigation the Northern Transportation Co. Was the leading one on the lakes, and maintained a handsome fleet of boats, that touched at every important port on the lakes. Many of these ships were constructed by Mr. Pearsons, and were among the finest afloat on fresh water. In 1866 Mr. Pearsons came to Michigan, and established a shipyard at Ferrysburg. From this yard were turned out many fine boats, among the number being the schooners Lake ton, Major N H. Ferry, R. R. Mason, J. I. Case, 8. C. Knapp, and many others. During General Grant's administration, Mr. Pearsons was appointed U. S. Inspector of hulls, and this position he held for ten years, until succeeded by Captain Dodge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Michigan Engineers' Annual: Containing the Proceedings of the Michigan Engineering Society, for 1889; The Eleventh Annual Convention Will Be Held in January, 1890, on Call of the Board of Directors We have reason for gratitude to the Giver of all good that our membership has suffered no loss by death since our last meeting at Kalamazoo, and for that general prosperity which prevails, and which has brought into greater requisition the engineers' services. We have had no disturbing strikes of laborers to stop engineering work, and be it said to our praise that there has been none of the trades-union spirit in which our members use the Society to make unusual and selfish demands; but all seem to be actuated by that spirit which shall better their knowledge in their respective branches of work and professional study, and thus make their united effort a public as well as a private good.
