Book Michigan at the Millennium

Download or read book Michigan at the Millennium written by Charles L. Ballard and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michigan at the Millennium provides objective background and analysis on a wide variety of key economic and fiscal issues. The chapters are written by economists and policy analysts at leading universities and other institutions in Michigan. Written in clear, non-technical language, the articles are aimed at an audience that includes members of the legislative and executive branches of state government, members of the judicial system, local government officials, policy analysts, and informed citizens. This volume follows in the tradition of the landmark 1982 study, Michigan's Fiscal and Economic Structure, edited by Harvey E. Brazer. The first section of the volume focuses on broad aspects of the economy, people, and land of Michigan, including chapters on demographics, the labor force, land use, the manufacturing sector, high-technology industries, and health care. Section two focuses on public expenditures and public services, and includes chapters on economic-development efforts, K-12 education, the transportation system, the welfare system, policies for low-wage workers and displaced workers, and pensions. The third section is concerned with taxes and other government revenues. It includes chapters on the Headlee Amendment, income taxes, sales and use taxes, property taxes, the Single Business Tax, intergovernmental fiscal relations, and other sources of revenue.

Book The Bureau of Transportation Statistics

Download or read book The Bureau of Transportation Statistics written by United States. Bureau of Transportation Statistics and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), the nation's newest federal statistical agency, contribute to the work of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)? What is the appropriate role for such an agency as a part of a major department? BTS was authorized in 1991 by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) in recognition of the need for more and better data for transportation officials at local, state, and federal levels. While the USDOT has many long-standing data collection programs for particular transportation modes (highways, rail, air, etc.), it has never had a statistical agency with a mandate to improve the quality and relevance of transportation data for important system-wide, cross-modal analyses of the nation's transportation system. This book examines how BTS can provide statistical leadership for USDOT, define and maintain quality standards for transportation data, and improve data documentation. It considers BTS's role in developing national transportation indicators, coordinating data collection throughout USDOT, filling gaps, identifying user needs, and developing analysis programs for transportation data. Anyone concerned with having high-quality, relevant transportation indicators and other data available for policy planning, evaluation, and research will be interested in this book, as will students of effective government.

Book Sign and Pavement Marking Visibility from the Perspective of Commercial Vehicle Drivers

Download or read book Sign and Pavement Marking Visibility from the Perspective of Commercial Vehicle Drivers written by Melisa Dayle Finley and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Texas, commercial vehicle safety is increasing in priority due to the rising volume of truck traffic and the disproportionate percentage of crashes and fatalities involving large trucks. One particular safety issue is the visibility of signing and pavement markings at night from a commercial vehicle driver's perspective. Through a nighttime controlled field study, the relationship between vehicle type (passenger car versus commercial vehicle) and sign/pavement marking material was evaluated in terms of the legibility distance of signs and the end detection distance of pavement markings. Additional research issues included investigations among sign type (guide, destination, and speed limit) and age (young, middle-aged, and old).
