Download or read book MIAS Architects at Centre Pompidou written by Josep Miàs and published by Actar D, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-01-12 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As a kid who wanted to be an architect you could either make clay shapes, drag pieces of driftwood into vague boxes—or put together Meccano cages. I followed the last option and surely so did Josep Miás". --Peter Cook Tracing through the pieces being published, you sense that Josep Miás is essentially a man who takes strips and edges and develops them into meshes, and then maybe combs, and then maybe honeycombs with a conspicuously boyish delight in making the sketch, the linear diagram, the scale model and the built building. Underlying the apparently fearless is a sense of what can fly, swing, lurch, lean or rest: in other words the composite that makes something possible to be as it is in space. MiAS Architects is an internationally recognized Architecture and Urbanism Studio, founded by Josep Miás in 2000, known for both its innovative experimental projects and its practice combining sustainable technology, innovative manufacturing and cutting edge construction practices.
Download or read book Funicular Cuca de Llum written by MIAS Architects and published by Actar D, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-06-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the new funicular of Tibidabo Park: la Cuca de Llum (glow worm). The emblematic funicular has been rehabilitated several times since its installation in 1901, however, in 2020 it was decided to design a new funicular, which was to be sustainable, transparent, fast and accessible. The new funicular, designed by MIAS in collaboration with Leitner Ropeways, achieves maximum integration into the landscape by hiding its installations, and thus enables the best views of the city of Barcelona. This book shows not only the history of the park and its funicular, but also all the details of its innovative design and connection to the city. With Contributions of Rosa Ortiz, PATSA Director, Martin Leitner, LEITNER ROPEWAYS director, and Josep Miàs, MIAS founder & director.

Download or read book Renzo Piano written by Lorenzo Ciccarelli and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renzo Piano is one of the world’s greatest living architects and creator of a host of iconic modern buildings, including the Pompidou in Paris, the Menil Collection in Texas, Kansai Airport in Japan, the Shard in London and the new Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Written and created in collaboration with the Piano Foundation in Genoa, this richly illustrated volume covers the early work as well as the most recent designs, making a complete survey of his career to date. Starting with his beginnings with the Pompidou Centre in the 1970s (in collaboration with Richard Rogers) the story continues up to construction of one of his latest works, a spectacular new bridge in Genoa in 2020. The book explores all of the studio’s main projects: the public spaces and museums, airports, theatres, and libraries. As well as giving unique insights into the creative process of Piano himself, the book includes numerous unpublished designs and photographs. In the process the book reveals Piano’s unique way of handling light and space, as well as his particular attention to the social implications of the profession of architect and the relationship of buildings to their urban environment and landscape.

Ideal for students and general readers, this book includes insightful, current information about France's past, present, and future. France is the country most visited by international tourists. Modern France is organized into thematic chapters covering the full range of French history and contemporary daily life. Chapter topics include: geography; history; government and politics; economy; religion and thought; social classes and ethnicity; gender, marriage, and sexuality; education; language; etiquette; literature and drama; art and architecture; music and dance; food; leisure and sports; and media and popular culture. Each chapter contains an overview of the topic and alphabetized entries on examples of each theme. A detailed historical timeline covers prehistoric times to the presidency of Emmanuel Macron. Special appendices offer profiles of a typical day in the life of representative members of French society, a glossary, key facts and figures about France, and a holiday chart. The volume will be useful for readers looking for specific topical information and for those who want to develop an informed perspective on aspects of modern France.
Download or read book L once Rosenberg s Cubism written by Giovanni Casini and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of modernism has generally been written as a story of artists and their creations alongside the collectors, gallerists, and curators who supported them. This is especially true of Cubism, where the received narrative centers on a tightly circumscribed group of artists and agents connected to the dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. Léonce Rosenberg’s Cubism shakes up the canon, revealing its artificial nature and pointing to a different, more inclusive understanding of the development of Cubism. Kahnweiler’s Cubism was narrowly focused. In contrast, Giovanni Casini shows us, the influential art dealer Léonce Rosenberg bought virtually any piece that could be labeled “Cubist” and proposed a radically different understanding of the movement. At Rosenberg’s Galerie L’Effort Moderne in Paris, artists such as Joseph Csáky, Auguste Herbin, Jean Metzinger, Diego Rivera, Gino Severini, and Georges Valmier were accorded the same treatment as Pablo Picasso or Georges Braque. In this book, Casini considers Rosenberg’s contribution to the history of Cubism, reflecting on the ways in which artistic movements are manufactured—and interpretive paradigms adopted. Deftly weaving biography with a scholarly analysis built on extensive archival research, Léonce Rosenberg’s Cubism is a fresh look at the history of interwar modernism and the definitive study of a figure who has been unjustly sidelined in the history of art. It will be compulsory reading for scholars of Cubism and Modernism.
Download or read book Century of the Child written by Juliet Kinchin and published by The Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2012 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines individual and collective visions for the material world of children, from utopian dreams for the citizens of the future to the dark realities of political conflict and exploitation. Surveying more than 100 years of toys, clothing, playgrounds, schools, children's hospitals, nurseries, furniture, posters, animation and books, this richly illustrated catalogue illuminates how progressive design has enhanced the physical, intellectual, and emotional development of children and, conversely, how models of children's play have informed experimental aesthetics and imaginative design thinking.
Download or read book Consumerism Waste and Re Use in Twentieth Century Fiction written by Rachele Dini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines manufactured waste and remaindered humans in literary critiques of capitalism by twentieth-century writers associated with the historical avant-garde and their descendants. Building on recent work in new materialism and waste studies, Rachele Dini reads waste as a process or phase amenable to interruption. From an initial exploration of waste and re-use in three Surrealist texts by Giorgio de Chirico, André Breton, and Mina Loy, Dini traces the conceptualization of waste in the writing of Samuel Beckett, Donald Barthelme, J.G. Ballard, William Gaddis, and Don DeLillo. In exploring the relationship between waste, capitalism, and literary experimentation, this book shows that the legacy of the historical avant-garde is bound up with an enduring faith in the radical potential of waste. The first study to focus specifically on waste in the twentieth-century imagination, this is a valuable contribution to the expanding field of waste studies.
Download or read book Logbook written by Renzo Piano and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renzo Piano (Genoa, 1937) studied architecture at the Polytechnic in Milan. Since winning the competition to design the Centre Pompidou in Paris (1971) along with Richard Rogers, Piano has become a prominent figure on the international architectural scene, with more works constructed outside Italy than in his own country. Piano brings a similar approach to both the small and the large scale. He has directed projects of very varying sizes: small buildings like the travelling IBN Pavilion and the Brancusi Museum; and great megastructures like Kansai's International Airport Terminal built on a man-made island in the Bay of Tokyo, and the remodeling of Berlin's Potsdamer Platz where work is scheduled to be completed in 2002.
Download or read book Cesare Zavattini s Neo realism and the Afterlife of an Idea written by David Brancaleone and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many Zavattinis are there? During a life spanning most of the twentieth century, the screenwriter who wrote Sciuscià, Bicycle Thieves, Miracle in Milan, and Umberto D. was also a pioneering magazine publisher in 1930s Milan, a public intellectual, a theorist, a tireless campaigner for change within the film industry, a man of letters, a painter and a poet. This intellectual biography is built on the premise that in order to understand Zavattini's idea of cinema and his legacy of ethical and political cinema (including guerrilla cinema), we must also tease out the multi-faceted strands of his interventions and their interplay over time. The book is for general readers, students and film historians, and anyone with an interest in cinema and its fate.
