Book Free Us from Bullying

Download or read book Free Us from Bullying written by Paul T. Coughlin and published by ACU Press. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what we believe about bullying isn’t true. An estimated twenty million oppressed children need our help today. A critical mission field awaiting Christians is to combat bullying and proclaim liberty to wounded children. To counter bullying, we must first understand some common misconceptions. •It is not necessarily true that bullies have low self-esteem and come from abusive homes. •It is not true that kids who aren’t bullied are indifferent to those who are. •Bullying is not a "school problem," and teachers are not the frontline defense. •Children who are bullied do not become stronger adults. Bullies cannot be stopped merely with more compassion and understanding. In fact, bullying stems from the same roots as racism, sexual harassment, and even genocide, and it requires people to combat it in similar ways that they combat other forms of oppression and injustice. We often think of combating injustice overseas, but we can combat a very real and dangerous injustice in our own neighborhoods. After more than a decade of working with tens of thousands of students, teachers, parents, and pastors, Coughlin knows that bullying represents the worst in human nature, but combating it promotes the best. Kindness and awareness—two buzzwords in today’s anti-bullying movement—will not end bullying on their own. They must be activated by courage, transforming bystanders into righteous, loving protectors of targets. When we join this mission of love and justice, we will become peacemakers who are blessed and called children of God (Matt. 5:9).

Book excerpt: These boys weren’t born cruel, savage, and merciless. Someone made them that way. The boys who started out as my tormentors saved my life. From who? None of us are quite sure. But when I wake up, somehow alive and mostly in one piece, I wake up to a changed house. Cayde and Dean seem to have turned over a new leaf. Instead of hurting me, they want to protect me. Instead of terrorizing me, they want to make me feel safe. And instead of punishing me—well, actually, I’ve learned to like that part. But even if they think the game is over, I know it’s just begun. There’s still people out there who want me dead, and secrets I need to uncover. Secrets that will shake the very foundations of what I’ve always believed—and if I keep going down this path, Blackmoor itself. There’s just one more piece I need in order to win. Jaxon King. Merciless King is the third book in the Blackmoor heirs series. It contains material that may be sensitive to some readers. There are no heroes in this series, and it will get much darker before the dawn. This book is for those who like their men cruel and damaged, their romance dark and questionable, and their emotions toyed with until the very end.

Book Popular Culture and the Austerity Myth

Download or read book Popular Culture and the Austerity Myth written by Pete Bennett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary popular culture is engaged in a rich and multi-levelled set of representational relations with austerity. This volume seeks to explore these relations, to ask: how does popular culture give expression to austerity; how are its effects conveyed; how do texts reproduce and expose its mythic qualities? It provides a reading of cultural texts in circulation in the present ‘age of austerity’. Through its central focus—popular culture—it considers the impact and influence of austerity across media and textual categories. The collection presents a theoretical deconstruction of popular culture’s reproduction of, and response to, mythical expressions of ‘austerity’ in Western culture, spanning the United Kingdom, North America, Europe and the Middle East and textual events from political media discourse, music, videogames, social media, film, television, journalism, folk art, food, protest movements, slow media and the practice of austerity in everyday life
