Book Handbook of Mammals of the South Central States

Download or read book Handbook of Mammals of the South Central States written by Jerry R. Choate and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1994-11-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authoritative yet easy to use, Handbook of Mammals of the South-Central States will be a close companion of field biologists and a ready reference for the naturally curious. Containing a wealth of information about mammalian wildlife in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, the book describes in detail ninety-five native mammals and eight introduced species that live in that region. The south-central United States is both diverse and complex ecologically, including within its range coastal and inland swamps, mountain peaks, forests, grasslands, sand dunes, and rich agricultural lands. In the books' introduction, the authors describe those environments--their physiography, drainage patterns, climates ,soils and vegetation--and explain how they determine which species can exist there. They also discuss other facts--such as geographical history, competition between species, and the effects of man--that determine which species actually do occur in a particular area. The authors furnish a checklist of the 103 mammals, arranged in phylogenetic sequence, with keys to identifying the orders, families, and species. An up-to-date account of each species follows, supplying details about the animal's distribution throughout the seven states; its physical description, including seize, color pattern, and features distinguishing it from related species; and its natural history, including preferred habitat, diet, activity patterns, resting or nesting sites, reproduction, and population densities. A photograph, distribution map, and list of selected references complete each account. Handbook of Mammals of the South-Central States is the first comprehensive guide to focus on this region's mammalian fauna. Students will appreciate its accessible format, glossary of terms, index to scientific and vernacular names of the mammals, and selected bibliography. Amateurs and professional naturalists alike will rely on it to identify mammals in the field, laboratory, and classroom.

Book Two Nations Indivisible

Download or read book Two Nations Indivisible written by Shannon K. O'Neil and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five freshly decapitated human heads are thrown onto a crowded dance floor in western Mexico. A Mexican drug cartel dismembers the body of a rival and then stitches his face onto a soccer ball. These are the sorts of grisly tales that dominate the media, infiltrate movies and TV shows, and ultimately shape Americans' perception of Mexico as a dangerous and scary place, overrun by brutal drug lords. Without a doubt, the drug war is real. In the last six years, over 60,000 people have been murdered in narco-related crimes. But, there is far more to Mexico's story than this gruesome narrative would suggest. While thugs have been grabbing the headlines, Mexico has undergone an unprecedented and under-publicized political, economic, and social transformation. In her groundbreaking book, Two Nations Indivisible, Shannon K. O'Neil argues that the United States is making a grave mistake by focusing on the politics of antagonism toward Mexico. Rather, we should wake up to the revolution of prosperity now unfolding there. The news that isn't being reported is that, over the last decade, Mexico has become a real democracy, providing its citizens a greater voice and opportunities to succeed on their own side of the border. Armed with higher levels of education, upwardly-mobile men and women have been working their way out of poverty, building the largest, most stable middle class in Mexico's history. This is the Mexico Americans need to get to know. Now more than ever, the two countries are indivisible. It is past time for the U.S. to forge a new relationship with its southern neighbor. Because in no uncertain terms, our future depends on it.

Book Urban Ants of North America and Europe

Download or read book Urban Ants of North America and Europe written by John H. Klotz and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ants that commonly invade homes, damage structures, inflict painful bites, or sting humans or their pets are considered pest ants. This illustrated identification guide highlights forty species of ants that pose difficulties in urban settings. Included are well-known invasive troublemakers such as the red imported fire ant and Argentine ant, as well as native species. After an introductory chapter on the evolution, biology, and ecology of pest ants, the book follows a taxonomic arrangement by subfamily. Each subfamily chapter includes separate illustrated keys to both the genera and species of that group to enable entomologists and pest control professionals to identify pest ants correctly. The species accounts cover biology, distribution, and methods for excluding and/or removing ants from human structures and landscapes. The authors focus on the ants' biology and nesting behavior, life cycles, and feeding preferences; an intimate understanding of these factors enables the implementation of the least toxic control methods available. A chapter on control principles and techniques encompasses chemical strategies, habitat and structural modifications, biological control, and integrated pest management methods. Urban Ants of North America and Europe also contains valuable information on the diagnosis and treatment of human reactions to ant stings and bites. This comprehensive reference work on these economically significant ants includes the scientific, English, French, Spanish, and German names for each species and a summary of invasive ant species in the United States and Europe.

Book The Geographical Distribution of Animals

Download or read book The Geographical Distribution of Animals written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 781 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Geographical Distribution of Animals" in 2 volumes is one of the best-known works by Alfred Russel Wallace. Extending the system developed by the British zoologist Philip Sclater for birds – which divided the earth into six separate geographic regions for describing species distribution – to cover mammals, reptiles and insects as well, Wallace created the basis for the zoogeographic regions still in use today. He discussed all of the factors then known to influence the current and past geographic distribution of animals within each geographic region, and provided maps showing factors, such as elevation of mountains, depths of oceans, and the character of regional vegetation, that affected the distribution of animals. Wallace summarized all the known families and genera of the higher animals and listed their known geographic distributions. Volume 1: The Principles and General Phenomena of Distribution: Introductory The Means of Dispersal and the Migrations of Animals On Zoological Region… Classification as Affecting the Study of Geographical Distribution On the Distribution of Extinct Animals: The Extinct Mammalia of the Old World Extinct Mammalia of the New World Various Extinct Animals… Zoological Geography: The Order of Succession of the Regions… The Palæarctic Region The Ethiopian Region The Oriental Region The Australian Region Volume 2: The Neotropical Region The Nearctic Region Summary of the Past Changes and General Relations of the Several Regions Geographical Zoology: Introduction The Distribution of the Families and Genera of Mammalia The Distribution of the Families and Genera of Birds The Distribution of the Families and Genera of Reptiles and Amphibia The Distribution of the Families of Fishes… The Distribution of Some of the More Important Families and Genera of Insects An Outline of the Geographical Distribution of Mollusca Summary of the Distribution and Lines of Migration of the Several Classes of Animals…

Book Mexico and the United States

Download or read book Mexico and the United States written by William Dirk Raat and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAFTA, the collapse of the peso, the Zapatista rebellion in Chiapas, and heightened attention to illegal immigration and the drug trade are just some of the recent issues that are newly interpreted in this updated survey of U.S.-Mexican relations. Ranging from the precontact colonial eras of each country to the present-day administrations of Vicente Fox and George W. Bush, W. Dirk Raat's coverage focuses on the economic, cultural, and political trends and events that have regarded each other over the centuries. Raat pays special attention to the factors that have subordinated Mexico not only to "the Colossus of the North" but to many other players in the global market. He also offers a unique look at the cultural dynamics of Gran Chichimeca or Mexamerica, the borderlands where the two countries share a common history.

Download or read book Made in Mexico written by Susan M. Gauss and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experiment with neoliberal market-oriented economic policy in Latin America, popularly known as the Washington Consensus, has run its course. With left-wing and populist regimes now in power in many countries, there is much debate about what direction economic policy should be taking, and there are those who believe that state-led development might be worth trying again. Susan Gauss’s study of the process by which Mexico transformed from a largely agrarian society into an urban, industrialized one in the two decades following the end of the Revolution is especially timely and may have lessons to offer to policy makers today. The image of a strong, centralized corporatist state led by the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) from the 1940s conceals what was actually a prolonged, messy process of debate and negotiation among the postrevolutionary state, labor, and regionally based industrial elites to define the nationalist project. Made in Mexico focuses on the distinctive nature of what happened in the four regions studied in detail: Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, and Puebla. It shows how industrialism enabled recalcitrant elites to maintain a regionally grounded preserve of local authority outside of formal ruling-party institutions, balancing the tensions among centralization, consolidation of growth, and Mexico’s deep legacies of regional authority.
