The chief ambition and challenge of these new forms of participatory governance is to institutionalise the prefigurative politics and social justice values that inspired them in the first place, by mobilising the bureaucracy to respond to their claims for reforms and rights. Book excerpt: Thy1/CD90 is a small and heavily N-glycosylated protein that was first identified on the cell surface of murine thymocytes. Today, it is known to be expressed in several other cell types, including human fetal thymocytes, hematopoietic stem cells, some subsets of fibroblasts, liver stem/progenitor, neurons, glioblastoma, mesothelium precursors and mesothelioma cells. In some tissues, Thy-1/CD90 plays a role in different processes, such as cell adhesion, interaction with extracellular matrix, migration. However, despite the available insights to the function of the molecule, we still require a better understanding of the processes that drive Thy1/CD90 expression and the consequences of its presence in cells, as well as to what extent these functions are conserved between species. The latter is especially relevant when thinking about possible translational studies. In this Research Topic, various aspects covering available and missing knowledge related to the molecular mechanisms controlling Thy1/CD90 expression and its role in physiological and pathological conditions are discussed.

Book excerpt: Islam and the Métropole is an exploration of the colonial policies of France regarding Islam and the effects they had on religion in the early days of Algerian independence. Following the colonization of Algeria in 1830, the French authorities adopted a manipulative policy regarding the philosophy and practice of Islam. This was based on nineteenth-century theories of progress elucidated by Saint-Simonian thought and the philosophy of Auguste Comte, which posited religion as a symbolic language that could be geared toward political ends in the name of «progress». The ensuing use of Islamic language and a simultaneous effort to depict traditional Islam as backward while using the language of «progress» to legitimate colonial repression created a complex dissonance that was reflected in the Muslim opposition to colonial rule. This dissonance continued in the early days of Algerian independence as the government sponsored its own idiosyncratic version of «Progressive Islam» as the religion of state. The contradictions underlying this vision of religion were never sufficiently resolved, resulting in the violent failure of the state's ideology.

Challenging the dominant view that women were victimized by the Japanese family laws and its patriarchal biases, Sungyun Lim argues that Korean women had to struggle equally against Korean patriarchal interests. Moreover, women were not passive victims; instead, they proactively struggled to expand their rights by participating in the Japanese colonial legal system. In turn, the Japanese doctrine of promoting progressive legal rights would prove advantageous to them. Following female plaintiffs and their civil disputes from the precolonial Choson dynasty through colonial times and into postcolonial reforms, this book presents a new and groundbreaking story about Korean women’s legal struggles, revealing their surprising collaborative relationship with the colonial state.
