En el primer capítulo del documento se presenta la Evaluación de agroecosistemas familiares campesinos mediante indicadores de sustentabilidad, usando para ello el “Marco para la Evaluación de Sistemas de Manejo de Recursos Naturales Incorporando Indicadores de Sustentabilidad (MESMIS)”, que evalúa integralmente los sistemas agrarios, generando una visión dinámica de su estado de desarrollo y conservación, a la vez que permite su análisis y la generación de posibles estrategias de mejora. En el segundo capítulo se presenta la metodología para la estimación de la huella de carbono en actividades agrarias, lo cual constituye un valioso aporte para que este sector avance en el proceso de ajuste tecnológico que le permita estar dentro de parámetros normativos internacionales, se aborda desde los elementos básicos de la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero como causa antrópica del cambio climático, sus efectos sobre los agroecosistemas, los estándares internacionales de estimación de huella de carbono desde la perspectiva del ciclo de vida, para finalmente presentar experiencias de su estimación en el sector agropecuario. En el tercer capítulo se presenta la metodología para la evaluación de la huella hídrica la cual se aborda desde el enfoque del recurso hídrico como base para el desarrollo de las actividades agroalimentarias, la metodología para la evaluación de la huella hídrica como indicador de sustentabilidad, y por último el análisis de la aplicabilidad de la huella hídrica en la evaluación de la sostenibilidad agrícola. Este documento constituye un valioso recurso de consulta para profesionales, asistentes técnicos, estudiantes de ciencias agrarias y ambientales, consultores y productores agropecuarios con interés en dar los primeros pasos en la identificación y aplicación de metodologías para determinar los niveles de sustentabilidad agropecuaria. Northeast Mexico represents an important forest resource to satisfy the needs of the population in these areas. In order to harness these forest resources, technology for exploring these valuable resources must be developed. These technologies (with special reference to biology and wood technologies) are available in scattered form in a few books but there is no central, comprehensive source for practical forest scientists for adopting efficient forest management, practice, and exploration. This book deals with the characterization of the vegetation, morphology, phenological development, biomass production (leaf, litter, wood), and bioenergy of some timber-yielding species of Northeast Mexico, which will serve as a guide to study timber-yielding plants in the native vegetation of Tamaulipan thornscrub and experimental plantations. This includes morphology, vegetation cover, biomass production in terms of volume leaf biomass, litter, and volume of fire wood and timber. Special emphasis is given to the estimation of bioenergy products and chemical composition (Ph, extractable lignin, and inorganic elements). Large variations exist in vegetation cover, morphology, phenological development, biomass production of leaf and litter, volume of wood and various variable of bioenergy products among the selected species. The maximum production was found in summer and the volume of the harvestable timber was obtained in experimental plantations. This book, therefore, will serve as a practical handbook to characterize timber-yielding plants, which will help to efficiently manage forestry resources.

This opened up opportunities for Cuban economists and scholars to participate in the development of the reform program. Thanks to grants from SSRC (Social Sciences Research Council, New York) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, several researchers from the Cuban think tank CEEC (Center for Studies of the Cuban Economy, Havana) got an opportunity to visit countries that could be of interest for the reform process, notably Vietnam, but also Brazil, South Africa and Norway. The result of these field visits and a subsequent workshop involving contributions from Cuban as well as non-Cuban scholars, this volume showcases unprecedented new insights into the process and prospects for reform along many dimensions, including foreign direct investment, import substitution, entrepreneurship and business creation, science and technology development, and fiscal policies. The resulting analysis, in a comparative perspective, provides a framework for future research as well as for business practice and policymaking.
