La industria manufacturera en México no es la excepción, el crecimiento económico e industrial de países de bajo costo ha logrado atraer la inversión, provocando una competencia en costos como nunca antes se había enfrentado. Por otro lado, los sistemas de administración moderaos han permitido, a empresas que están localizadas en geografías de alto costo, operar con márgenes competitivos. En este trabajo de tesis se identificó como problema la falta de modelos y metodologías que ayuden a los directivos y a las organizaciones en la identificación, planeación y ejecución de proyectos de mejora estratégicos; optimización de recursos y medición del impacto de éstos en los indicadores del negocio. Ante dicho problema, en el presente trabajo se propone una metodología que adapta el modelo general de Zachman para la mejora e innovación de los procesos. Dicha metodología integra otras metodologías tales como: manufactura esbelta, seis sigma y work-out, entre otras; así como el uso de las herramientas conocidas por la empresa. A través de la aplicación de los conceptos de la Ingeniería de la Integración de la Empresa (EIE) se describen los pasos que comprende dicho método, así como el desarrollo de cada uno de ellos. Tras la aplicación de dicha metodología en la empresa de la industria electrónica, se comprobó y validó su eficacia. Se llevaron a término diversos proyectos de mejora que permitieron alcanzar la optimización de recursos en las unidades de negocio donde se trabajó. En conclusión, esta tesis pretende ser de utilidad para el directivo (o para quien él designe como líder de proyectos) de la industria de manufactura, dotándolo de un método sencillo para desarrollar su liderazgo, logrando los objetivos y metas trazados, en el período de tiempo estimado. La información de referencia detallada, los ejemplos de su aplicación, los resultados y otros beneficios de la implementación están incluidos en éste documento.

In addition, ever worsening pollution due to fossil fuel consumption, for instance oil and chemical spills, strip mining, sulphur emission and accumulation of solid wastes, has, among other things, led to an increase of as much as 10% in the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere in this century. This has induced a warming trend through the 'greenhouse effect' which prevents infrared radiation from leaving it. Many people think the average planetary temperatures may rise by 4°C or so by 2050. This is probably true since Antarctic ice cores evidence indicates that, over the last 160000 years, ice ages coincided with reduced levels of carbon dioxide and warmer interglacial episodes with increased levels of the gas in the atmosphere. Consequently, such an elevation of temperature over such a relatively short span of time would have catastrophic results in terms of rising sea level and associated flooding of vast tracts of low-lying lands. Reducing the burning of fossil fuels makes sense on both economic and environmental grounds. One of the most attractive alternatives is geothermal resources, especially in developing countries, for instance in El Salvador where geothermal energy provides about a fifth of total installed electrical power already. In fact, by the middle 1980s, at least 121 geothermal power plants were operating worldwide, most being of the dry steam type.

Book excerpt: With the increase in the amount and dimensionality of scientific data collected, new approaches to the design of displays of such data have become essential. The designers of visual and auditory displays of scientific data seek to harness perceptual processes for data exploration. The general aim is to provide ways for raw data, and the statistical and mathematical structures they comprise, to "speak for themselves" and, thereby, enable scientists to conduct exploratory, in addition to confirmatory analyses of their data. The present primary approach via visualization depends mainly on coding data as positions of visually distinguishable elements in a two- or three- dimen sional euclidean space, e.g., as discrete points comprising clusters in scatter-plot displays and as patches comprising the hills and valleys of statistical surfaces. These displays are immensely effective because the data are in a form that evokes natural perceptual processing of the data into impressions of the presence and spatial disposition of apparent materials, objects, and structures in the viewers apparent physical environment. The problem with this mode of display, however, is that its perceptual potency is largeiy exhausted at dimension three, while we increasingly face the need to explore data of much greater dimensionality. The challenge posed for visualization researchers is to develop new modes of display that can push the dimensionality of data displays higher while retaining the kind of perceptual potency needed for data exploration.
