Book Lessons from Problem based Learning

Download or read book Lessons from Problem based Learning written by Henk van Berkel and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-08-12 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem-based learning (PBL) has excited interest among educators around the world for several decades. Among the most notable applications of PBL is the approach taken at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life sciences (FHML) at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. Starting in 1974 as a medical school, the faculty embarked on the innovative pathway of problem-based learning, trying to establish a medical training program which applied recent insights of education which would be better adapted to the needs of the modem physician. The medical school, currently part of the FHML, can be considered as an 'established' school, where original innovations and educational changes have become part of a routine. The first book to bring this wealth of information together, Lessons from Problem-based Learning documents those findings and shares the experiences of those involved, to encourage further debate and refinement of problem-based learning in specific applications elsewhere and in general educational discussion and thought. Each chapter provides a description of why and what has been done in the Maastricht program, followed by reflection on the benefits and issues that have arisen for these developments. The final section of the book examines the application of PBL in the future, and how it is likely to develop further.

Book Research Methods in Social Studies Education

Download or read book Research Methods in Social Studies Education written by Keith C. Barton and published by IAP. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume fills a significant gap in the scholarship on social studies education by providing thoughtful reflections on research methods in the field. It is not a “how to” guide but an exploration of key issues related to the design and implementation of empirical studies. The authors are active researchers who use varied methods in diverse settings—including historical research, international comparative studies, survey research, interviews with students and teachers, classroom observations, self-studies and action research, and emancipatory methodologies. They use their own experiences to examine such topics as the conceptualization of research questions, relationships with participants, researchers’ identities, and elicitation of students’ and teachers’ thinking. This collection should become indispensable for both beginning and experienced scholars in social studies.

Book Conducting Educational Design Research

Download or read book Conducting Educational Design Research written by Susan McKenney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Among the wide variety of backgrounds, many of those active in defining and applying educational design research appear to have arrived through an interest in psychology, the learning sciences or instructional design. Although most design studies are carried out in multi-disciplinary teams, participants need to conceptually understand the marriage between the design discipline and scientific research traditions. Conducting Educational Design Research emphasises the application of design knowledge and skills in research programs, guiding readers through the various disciplinary backgrounds and scientific developments current today. Therefore, this book on design research will be especially useful for faculty and students in (a) graduate education programs where exposure to research methodologies is strong but exposure to design methodologies is limited; and (b) graduate programs in instructional design where participants have strong backgrounds in design, but may lack the scientific research orientation. In a time when design research is gaining momentum, it seems notable that educational research programs are being confronted with the randomized field trials movement; and educational design programs are at risk of diluting their design character as valuable curricular time is being usurped by more traditional research skills. This book not only offers an invaluable classroom resource, it also provides for the ongoing university dialogue on how to best prepare the next generation of educational researchers"--Provided by publisher
