Book Hints to Gymnasts

Download or read book Hints to Gymnasts written by Ferdinand Graf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints to Gymnasts: Being Sound Advice and Hints to Leaders and Teachers in Gymnasia and Schools IN compiling this book our object has been to bring within the reach of those Teachers of Physical Education, Amateur or Professional, who have not had an Opportunity of going through a proper Course of Instruction in Gymnastics, a means of acquiring the necessary knowledge to enable' them to fulfil their duties in a creditable manner. Notwithstanding the many laudable efforts made by several Institutions, notably the Orion and German Gymnastic Clubs, the British College of Physical Education, the Amateur Gymnastic and Fencing Association, and recently the Gymnastic Teachers' Institute, to spread a more scientific knowledge of Gymnastics among Leaders and Instructors, our experience, extending over 20 years, has taught us that the great majority of Provincial Teachers have still much to learn as to the benefits to be derived from a system of teaching based on scientific principles. There are, of course, notable exceptions, but these only tend to prove more conclu sively the truth of our assertion. It is, of course, impossible for us in these few pages to entirely cover the whole field of gymnastics, but it is hoped that our readers may find therein the groundwork whereby they may be enabled to teach a more modernised system than that which now generally obtains. Much of the matter that appears in this book has been published in the columns of the gymnast' and athletic review, but knowing from personal experience how desirable it is to have Articles and Exercises such as these in handy book form, we have, at the repeated request of many of our readers, decided to so publish them, and we trust that it may be the means of popularising a better Gymnastic knowledge among a class of Gymnasts who have no other means of making themselves acquainted with the art of teaching others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instructions in Gymnastics We would especially recommend to teachers of gymnastics and leaders of the same, to adhere strictly to the rule of dividing their classes equally, according to strength and ability, and in all cases retain the gradation of the exercises in the regular order as they may follow each other. Pupils should likewise be classed according to their expertness. These classes should not consist of more than ten pupils, and each class should have its separate leader. Teachers should be particular to have their scholars conform to the rules and regulations. The leaders of the different classes should be selected by the teacher from the best pupils of the highest rank. N o difficult exercises should be attempted until the easier ones are performed with ease and safety. Pupils should by all means avoid bad habits, such as making grimaces, stretching out the tongue, puffing the cheeks, and other contortions oi' the body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Modern Physical Training Denmark was the first European state to introduce physi cal training into its schools as an essential part of the course and to prepare teachers of that subject by offering sys tematic instruction in theory and method of gymnastics. The leader in this movement, and its director for forty years, was franz nachtegall (177 7 - 1847 whose whole life was passed in Copenhagen. As a student in the uni versity there he had applied himself to fencing and vaulting, and after his father's death undertook to support himself by giving instruction in gymnastics, at first in a private school. In 1799 he organized a gymnastic club composed of stu dents and young merchants, and on November 5 of the same year opened a. Private gymnasium, the first institution in modern times devoted exclusively to physical training. The venture was successful from the start. When five years later the government established a Military Institute for training non-commissioned officers to teach gymnastics in the army, its management was entrusted to Nachtegall, who received the title Professor of Gymnastics. The King also started, in 1808, a Civil Gymnastic Institute, in order to pre pare teachers for the elementary schools. A law passed in 1814 decreed that every school in Denmark Should provide grounds and apparatus for gymnastics, and that wherever the teachers were able to direct it the children should be given an hour of exercise each day, in addition to the regu lar schedule. Nachtegall was appointed Director of Gym nasties in 1821, his duties extending to the schools of the army and navy as well as to civil institutions. He pub lished, In 1828, a Manual of Gymnastics for Elementary Schools, the first book of its kind, and three years later' a Manual of Gymnastics for Use in Secondary Schools. Both were afterwards translated into German. Nachtegall resigned his position as Director of Gymnastics in 1842. Consult the American Physical Education Review for June, 1904 (vol. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gymnastic Exercises for Elementary Schools: Supplemented by Fancy Steps and Games In selecting and arranging the material for this book, I have tried to meet the demand especially of those teachers who are being more and more called upon to add to their curriculum this branch of physical education, namely, gymnastics. Several years of experience in elementary grades and in normal teaching have shown what the grade teacher, as well as the normal pupil, would find essential and helpful in teaching gymnastics. A teacher's text-book to meet the general needs must be of such a nature that the simple and combined movements which it describes may be easily understood and accurately reproduced. This is provided for by definite descriptions of all movements, positions, and combinations, and by illustrations of many of the fundamental positions. The use of technical terms is reduced to a minimum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Teachers Course in Physical Training

Download or read book A Teachers Course in Physical Training written by Wilbur P. Bowen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Teachers' Course in Physical Training: A Brief Study of the Fundamental Principles of Gymnastic Training; Designed for Teachers of the Public Schools The only excuse for the existence of this little volume is necessity. It has been the duty of the author, during the past four years, to give a ten Weeks' course in the, theory of Physical Training to meet the needs of students prepar ing to teach in the grades of the public schools. It is of course imperative that-these prospective teachers be given as clear an insight as possible into the principles of Anat omy, Physiology, Hygiene, Gymnastic technique, and Peda gogy upon which the teaching of Physical Training de pends. The attempt to have this knowledge acquired by reference to the standard works in these subjects, -a plan that is perfectly feasible in the case of students taking a more complete course, - has resulted in the use of a large amount of time that was comparatively unproductive, because the books that are reliable are very full and very technical in their discussions of these matters. The cir cuinstances demand the use of a text, to be supplemented by lectures, demonstrations and recitations. Such a guide was not to be found in the market, - hence the necessity.
