Book Methods of Protein and Nucleic Acid Research

Download or read book Methods of Protein and Nucleic Acid Research written by L.A. Osterman and published by Springer. This book was released on 1984-02-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrophoresis is the leading method among those used in the investigation of pro teins and nucleic acids. A paper on the study of these biopolymers without recourse to electrophoresis at each fractionation or characterization step is very unlikely to be encountered in the current scientific literature. This method enables separation of macromolecules according to characteristic features such as size (or molecular weight), shape, secondary structure and electric charge and these parameters can in fluence electrophoretic properties either separately or jointly. The physical background of this method is as follows. Macromolecules in a buf fer solution may become charged; the sign and magnitude of the total electrical charge depending on the pH of the medium. When such a solution is put into an insulated channel, e.g. in a glass tube, and a voltage applied at the ends of the chan nel, an electric field will be formed and direct current will pass through solution. The field strength can be defined as the potential difference at the ends of the chan nel (or its section) with respect to its length (v/cm). When exposed to an electrical field macromolecules will migrate towards the cathode or the anode according to their net charge and frictional force will limit the migration velocity.

Book Enzymes Receptors and Carriers of Biological Membranes

Download or read book Enzymes Receptors and Carriers of Biological Membranes written by A. Azzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual follows at a distance of 3 years the previous one entitled Mem brane Proteins, and, like its predecessor, it is the result of an International Advanced Course sponsored by FEBS, SKMB and SNG, which was held in Bern in September 1983. The experiments offered to the students in the course had to be largely up· dated or chosen from new areas of membrane research, because of the sub stantial and rapid development of the field. Using the protocols of the course, the participants (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and also senior scientists), in most cases not at all ex pert in biomembrane research, were able to repeat all the experiments suc cessfully. Those few protocols which for some reason did not fulfill the role we expected were modified. These protocols have now been collected in this manual, which we are able to offer to a number of biology, biochemistry and biophysics laborato ries, hoping that the selected number of methods which have been success fully used during the Advanced Course may be useful to them. This manual is also intented for teachers of practical classes, who may use it as a text book and as source of selected references, collected not in the library, but in the laboratory, from the notebooks of the young researchers who have contributed so much to the success of the Course.

Book Molecular Biomethods Handbook

Download or read book Molecular Biomethods Handbook written by Ralph Rapley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-10-09 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative team of investigators illuminate the core bioanalytical techniques used every day in their own laboratories, and laboratories throughout the world. These highly experienced scientists fully explain both the theory behind, and the application of, these key techniques, and include extensive references for those seeking detailed laboratory protocols. The techniques covered range from the extraction, separation, detection, and characterization of nucleic acids to gene cloning and library production, mapping, expression, transgenesis, differential display, and DNA profiling, to name a few. Numerous key protein methods, as well as support and related techniques, are also included. The goal is to provide established scientists and novices who are new to these techniques with a deeper understanding of the widest variety of biotechniques and their applications.

Book excerpt: In this, the post-genomic age, our knowledge of biological systems continues to expand and progress. As the research becomes more focused, so too does the data. Genomic research progresses to proteomics and brings us to a deeper understanding of the behavior and function of protein clusters. And now proteomics gives way to neuroproteomics as we beg

Book Protein Analysis and Purification

Download or read book Protein Analysis and Purification written by I.M. Rosenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to be a practical progression of experimental techniques an investigator may follow when embarking on a biochemical project. The protocols may be performed in the order laid out or may be used inde pendently. The aim of the book is to assist a wide range of researchers. from the novice to the frustrated veteran, in the choice and design of experiments that are to be performed to provide answers to specific questions. The manual describes standard techniques that have been shown to work, as well as some newer ones that are beginning to prove important. By following the promi nently numbered steps. you can work your way through any protocol. whether it's a new technique or a task you've done before for which you need a quick review or updated methodology. This manual will assist the experimentalist in designing properly controlled experiments. There will be no advice for dealing with specific pieces of equip ment other than encouragement to read the manual, if you can find it. Through out all manipulations try to be objective. Be on the lookout for unexpected findings. You will learn the most from unexpected results. and they are often the beginning of the next project. It is never possible to record too much in your lab notebook. Do not get discouraged. Remember, things will not always run smoothly.
