Download or read book A Treatise on the Measurement of Electrical Resistance Classic Reprint written by William Arthur Price and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Measurement of Electrical Resistance The determination Of resistance is the cardinal operation in electrical measurement, in the same sense that the comparison of masses is the cardinal operation in quantitative chemistry, or that of linear and angular distances in geodesy and surveying; and for similar reasons. The electrical resistance of many stable bodies is known to be a highly characteristic and permanent quality, and indeed is probably so of all its measurement in terms of other resistances is performed with great ease: the exactness of the result does not depend on very accurate construction of the apparatus used and this apparatus may be easily made of great sensibility. The measurement of resistance is little inferior, in point of exactness, to that of mass, and superior to that of angular or linear distance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Measuring Electrical Resistance This treatise contains a compilation of many methods of measuring electrical resistance, most of which are fully described. Some of the methods are new and are described here for the first time. Several are illustrated with records of sample measurements. While it is not claimed that the work is exhaustive, the author has selected for presentation all methods which in his judgment are useful, for commercial tests and measurements, for purposes of instruction in educational institutions and for application in technical and research laboratories. Rules for the estimation of errors are briefly considered in the first chapter. One chapter is devoted to methods of measuring temperature by means of resistance measuring apparatus, and in another chapter methods are considered for locating faults upon telephone and other land lines. While few descriptions of specific types of instruments are given, two chapters are devoted to a consideration of the broad principles which should apply when designing, selecting and using apparatus intended for the measurement of electrical resistance. An appendix contains data and information useful in connection with the subjects treated. Methods employed for the absolute determination of the ohm are not considered because few persons have occasion to make this determination. In the examples recorded to illustrate specific methods, it may at times appear to some that the precision obtained is unsatisfactory. The measurements recorded, however, are real and not hypothetical cases, and they were made under such working conditions as ordinarily obtain. They are thought, therefore, to be more instructive than specially selected cases where the measurements have been made with unusual skill and care resulting in exceptionally high precision. Book The Temperature Coefficient of Resistance of Copper Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Temperature Coefficient of Resistance of Copper Classic Reprint written by J. H. Dellinger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperature Coefficient of Resistance of Copper For the resistance measurements the wires were placed in a specially designed oil bath with provisions for efficient stirring of the oil, for heating and cooling, and for temperature regulation. The wire was held between heavy clamps through which the cur rent was introduced. For conductivity determinations the resist ance was measured between knife edges mounted 1 meter apart on the marble base. The Thomson bridge method was used for measuring the resistances, employing a double set of variable ratio coils; an accuracy of 1 in 10 000 Was easily attained. The resist ance of the copper sample was compared with the resistance of a copper standard in the same bath as the test sample. The copper standards were Wires carrying soldered potential leads and placed in frames having connections for both current and potential leads. These connections dropped into mercury cups on the marble base in the oil bath. The resistances of the copper standards were compared from time to time with manganin resistance standards which were kept in a separate oil bath. The method of comparing the copper samples with a copper standard has the advantage that accurate temperature measurement is unnecessary. Book Electrical Measurements Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electrical Measurements Classic Reprint written by Frank A. Laws and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Measurements In this book it is intended to give a general treatment of the subject of electrical measurements, special emphasis being placed on those matters which are important to the student of electrical engineering. In preparing a book of this character one has to consider, not only the mature reader who may desire a compendium of methods together with certain practical suggestions, but the student who is beginning the study of Electrical Engineering and who should acquire early in his course a sound knowledge of the process of electrical measurement. This knowledge is fundamental not only to much of the work which the student is required to do in the dynamo laboratory as a matter of engineering training, but to an adequate understanding of electrical testing as it is eu countered in the practice of the electrical engineering profession. In the preparation of the text this second class of readers has been particularly in mind. It is assumed that those who use this text have had courses in physics, the theory of electricity, and in mathematics, such as are given to third year students in technical schools of the first rank. Book Electric and Magnetic Measurements and Measuring Instruments Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electric and Magnetic Measurements and Measuring Instruments Classic Reprint written by Frank W. Roller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric and Magnetic Measurements and Measuring Instruments The following volume has been written for the use of those who have to do with electrical and magnetic measurements in one form or another, and as these must be made in practically all branches of the profession, from the simple testing out of lines and resistances to the most elaborate determination of designs, it is hoped that its Sphere of usefulness will be quite large. The subjects have, throughout, been approached with a View toward their use by users, not manufacturers, of measuring apparatus, that is to say the book is in no sense intended as a treatise on the design and construction of instruments, the circle interested being decidedly limited. Descriptions are, however, given of apparatus as well as of methods of test, because knowl edge of the manner in which a principle is utilized in concrete instruments often suggests, to one having a determination to make but is at the same time without the particular form of appliance ordinarily employed for that purpose, means of adap ing thereto some other device which is at hand. Further, in illustrating examples of instruments for different kinds of work, there has been in mind the idea that these will enable engineers to decide, with the aid of their general engineering knowledge, which are the best suited to their particular requirements. Book Electrical Measurements

Download or read book Electrical Measurements written by Henry S. Carhart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Measurements: A Laboratory Manual Progress in the methods of Electrical Measurement is quite as marked as in the applications of electricity. The perfecting of measuring instruments keeps pace with the demands imposed by scientific accuracy. Laboratory practice should not be permitted to lag behind discovery and commercial applications; obso lete methods may with propriety be relegated to historical collections, along With antiquated apparatus, so that students in electricity may learn only the latest modes of procedure. The authors of this book have proceeded on this plan in collecting and devising methods to form a graded series of experiments for the use of several classes in electrical measurements. How well they have succeeded others must decide. Quantitative experiments only have been introduced, and they have been selected with the object of illustrating the general methods of measurement rather than the applications to specific departments of technical work, such as submarine cable testing, telegraphy and telephony, or dynamo electric machinery. It is thought to be better that these subjects should be treated in Special handbooks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A New Method for the Absolute Measurement of Electric Quantity Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New Method for the Absolute Measurement of Electric Quantity Classic Reprint written by Burton Mccollum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Method for the Absolute Measurement of Electric Quantity In the absolute measurement of current two classes of methods are available which are capable of considerable accuracy, viz, electrodynamometer methods, in which the torque exerted between a fixed and a movable coil is measured and the current in the coils calculated from this measured torque and the known dimensions of the coil; and current balances, in which the force exerted between two coils carrying the current to be measured is balanced against a known weight and the current calculated from the weight and previously determined constants of the coils. By the latter form of apparatus measurements of current have been made in which a higher degree of accuracy has been attained than with the first-named type. There are, however, numerous possible sources of error in the use of the current balance, and, although most of these can be made small individually, they may on account of their number, introduce uncertainty in the result. The ordinary electrodynamometer methods as well as the current balance require in effect two separate experiments, the first for the determination of the value of the current in terms of a torque or force, and the second for the recording of this current in terms of the electro-chemical equivalent of silver or of a resistance and standard cell. This second experiment may introduce additional possibilities of error, owing to variations in the strength of the current or the voltage of the standard cell, errors in the resistances of the potentiometer circuits and thermo-electromotive forces in the galvanometer and potentiometer circuits, etc., and while these errors can be made small, still their possible presence increases the difficulties of the measurements. Although the current balance is capable of yielding a high degree of accuracy, it is not desirable to depend on the value given by a single type of apparatus, even though the experiments may be repeated with good agreement by different experimenters and with different instruments. It is highly desirable that if possible the values be checked by some other method, using a totally different type of apparatus.
