Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods in the Art of Taxidermy From this, however, we cannot infer that these specimens were mounted or arranged to represent life-like attitudes, but simply that the skins were preserved. If our art is of ancient date, we have no relics of it, as we find in the other arts, as lasting as those of Grecian sculpture, which date back as far as the eighth century B. C. The famous Lion Gate at Mycenae is supposed to be even older. We have no monuments in our art that defy the march of time like the bronze Discobolus of Myron, yet to be seen in the Vatican at Rome. Book The Art of Taxidermy

Download or read book The Art of Taxidermy written by John Rowley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Taxidermy Taxidermy, a name formerly applied to the trade of most inartistically upholstering a skin, has of late years made such enormous strides toward perfection - as much, perhaps, by improvement in methods as by any superior skill on the part of the taxidermist - that I am emboldened to describe in the following pages the results of a number of years' study, experiment, and practical work in the taxidermic field. It is a fact much to be regretted that many taxidermists, by reason of their extreme jealousy and narrowness of mind, are exceedingly loath to communicate new ideas and discoveries to their fellow-workers. But, thanks to the more general enlargement and increase in number of scientific museums of late years, a number of men of genius and education have taken up the study of the art. It is largely owing to their exertions that the taxidermy of the present day is so far in advance of what it was a decade since; and the few works on the subject that they have written have been eagerly devoured by every progressive taxidermist in the country. Some of the methods described in the following pages may seem to involve considerable time and expense. Let it be said, in answer to this, "If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing well." Book excerpt: In this collection of taxidermy art, you’ll find a winged monkey with a fez and a martini glass, a jewel-encrusted piglet, a bionic fawn, and a polar bear balancing on a floating refrigerator. Author Robert Marbury makes for a friendly (and often funny) guide, addressing the three big questions people have about taxidermy art: What is it all about? Can I see some examples? and How can I make my own? He takes readers through a brief history of taxidermy (and what sets artistic taxidermy apart) and presents stunning pieces from the most influential artists in the field. Rounding out the book are illustrated how-to lessons to get readers started on their own work, with sources for taxidermy materials and resources for the budding taxidermist.
