Book Physical and Chemical Methods

Download or read book Physical and Chemical Methods written by Curtis A. Williams and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Immunology: Volume II, Physical and Chemical Methods is a collection of papers dealing with electrophoresis, analytical ultracentrifugation, dialysis, ultrafiltration, cellulose ion exchangers, and chromatographic separation of macromolecules on porous gels. Some papers explain the applications of radioisotopes, optical analysis, and chemical analysis of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acid. One paper describes the theory of electro-migration. Factors such as electrical charge or frictional coefficients govern the rate of migration of charged particles in an electric field. The differences found in their velocities can be used to separate substances or analyze them. Mobility is a characteristic property of molecules and can also be influenced by the composition of the medium or solution. Dialysis separates solvents too large to diffuse through a barrier from smaller solutes; ultrafiltration (reverse osmosis) forces solvent and solutes up to a certain critical size through the barrier by a high pressure on one side. The book notes that the membrane never becomes plugged in dialysis because of some opposite movement of the solvent. Another paper points out that the significance of radioactive tracers in immunochemistry employed to identify and label macromolecules functioning as antigens and antibodies. The collection can prove valuable to bio-chemists, cellular biologists, micro-biologists, developmental biologists, and scientists involved in immunological research.

Book Writing Skills for Veterinarians

Download or read book Writing Skills for Veterinarians written by Ryane E. Englar and published by 5m Books Ltd. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communicating ideas in veterinary medicine is a fundamental part of continuing veterinary research and building a career as a clinician. The purpose of this book is to help increasing efficiency and effectiveness in writing professional documents, e.g. writing a concise yet thorough discharge statement to avoid repeated client call-backs to clarify medical recommendations. The book also aims at improving the reader’s confidence in writing skills through guided and well-thought out “homework” or practice exercises. Useful for both veterinary students and practising vets, Writing Skills for Veterinarians addresses how to develop and hone veterinary medical and scientific writing techniques. The basics of veterinary writing and why it matters are covered before concentrating on specific written models expected of vets – creating medical documents, client and colleague communications, report writing, journal articles and research papers and presentations. At the end of the book is a resource-bank of additional exercises relating to each type of document. 5m Books

Book Nuclear And Radiation Physics In Medicine A Conceptual Introduction

Download or read book Nuclear And Radiation Physics In Medicine A Conceptual Introduction written by Anthony Wallace Key and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern physics, radiation, atomic and nuclear physics have revolutionized medical diagnosis and the treatment of cancer. The work of the scientists whose discoveries fuelled this revolution is an important part of our scientific and cultural heritage. Using basic physics and simple mathematics this book shows how the discoveries of fundamental physics lead to an understanding of the important design principles of diagnosis and radiation therapy. With its carefully chosen and realistic exercises and worked examples, it provides a brief introduction and broad foundation for students and practitioners in the life sciences. This book could be used as a text for an introductory course in medical physics or biophysics. For those who are starting their careers in medical sciences or are already practitioners, it offers some interesting and useful background and an aide-memoire of the basics. For members of the public it could provide a deeper understanding of the science that informs the medical procedures that too many will be subject to, at a deeper level than the often excellent but, of necessity very basic and purely practical information available from hospitals and Web sites. The former audience may be interested in the mathematical demonstrations; the latter certainly will not be. However, for both audiences, the details of the calculations are less important than the knowledge that they can be done.
