Book Concise History of the Methodist Protestant Church from Its Origin Vol 3

Download or read book Concise History of the Methodist Protestant Church from Its Origin Vol 3 written by ANCEL H. BASSETT and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concise History of the Methodist Protestant Church From Its Origin, Vol. 3: Embracing the Circumstances of the Suspension of the Northern and Western Conferences in 1858, the Entire Career of the Methodist Church, and the Reunion of the Two Branches in 1877 The writer has endeavored to pursue an originality of statement, eschewing certain threadbare points, which the reader would not desire to have reiterated. And a variety of facts and incidents are here given which have not before met the eye of the reader. The writer has aimed at conciseness, in view of bringing the work into one volume, so that its cost may adapt it to general circulation. Hence many may be disappointed not to find here local and personal details, which would have so swelled the work as to require another volume, which might easily have been produced. Let it here be remarked, if Mr. Williams in his History presented most fully the record of transactions in and about his city (baltimore), and if Dr. Paris, in his History, dwelt most in detail upon transactions in his State (north Caro lina), it can not be thought amiss that this writer, a life-long resident and laborer in the North and West, should present more at large the historical facts pertaining to that wing of the church, though giving in sufficient detail the record of the other localities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Methodist Protestant Church The present appears to be the proper time to pre sent our fellowship, and the christian public, with a history OF the methodist protestant church. The brethren best acquainted with the origin and pro gress of our denomination are becoming advanced in life, and in a little while 'will pass Off the stage of action. Some have already gone. The materials also, essential to a standard work are disappearing, so that in a few years hence, the historian would find it difficult, if not impossible, to obtain the necessary data for the preparation and completion of a correct history of our Church. Book History of Methodist Reform Synoptical of General Methodism 1703 to 1898 Vol 1

This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Methodist Reform, Synoptical of General Methodism, 1703 to 1898, Vol. 1: With Special and Comprehensive Reference to Its Most Salient Exhibition in the History of the Methodist Protestant Church Methodist literature without recourse to historians and mono graphists whose coloring is unfavorable to liberal views. As common property it is, therefore, appropriated for information as to the rise and progress of doctrinal Methodism and its spiritual agencies, called means of grace, touching which perfect unity has been preserved among our coreligionists the wide world over; as well as for contrast of governmental methods, equal prosperity attending diverse polities, and thus demonstrating that it was primarily due, not to any particular system, but to the doctrines and means of grace formulated by the Wesleys out of the Scrip tures and the needs of the period. As collateral to this method and an irrefragable corollary from the facts Of history, one of the fundamentals of this work is submitted as proven; to wit, that the dominant system on either shore of the Atlantic is responsible directly or indirectly for all the divisions of Metho dism, and that in consequence organic unity is an impossibility, even if it could be shown politic, until the divisive elements in the dominating systems are eliminated. These reasons must be the author's plea for occupying the entire first volume in what is really a preparation for the History of the Methodist Protestant Church. No apology is therefore offered for the extended space given to the vindication of the two men who have been most vilified and misrepresented, - Dr. White head of the Wesleyan Methodists and James o'kelly of the Asburyan Methodists. In both cases much new information is furnished; and while no effort is made to condone their errors of temperament and judgment, earnest, and it is believed success ful, effort is made to rescue their memories from unmerited Obloquy. It will also be discovered that nowhere in current Methodist history can such a running biography of Francis Asbury be found, portraying every side of his wonderful character and meting out with an even hand the merits and demerits of an unique system, of which he was the father, in emulation Of the methods of John Wesley, the founder of it. Biographically it is believed that valuable new information is furnished, and fuller extracts made from Asbury's Journal than has been essayed by any other historiographer. Book A Sourcebook for Genealogical Research

Download or read book A Sourcebook for Genealogical Research written by Foster Stockwell and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genealogists can sometimes require obscure resources when in search of information about ancestors. Tracking down records to complete a family tree can become laborious when the researcher doesn't know where to begin looking. Many of the best resources are maintained regionally or even locally, and aren’t widely known. This reference work serves as a guide to both beginning and experienced genealogy researchers. The sourcebook is easily accessible and usable, featuring approximately 270 entries on all aspects of genealogical research and family history compilation. The entries are listed alphabetically and cross-referenced so any researcher can quickly find the information he or she is seeking. Each state and each of the provinces of Canada has its own entry; other countries are listed under appropriate headings. The author also provides more than 700 addresses from all over the world so that the genealogist or general researcher may contact any one of these organizations to obtain specific information about particular births, deaths, marriages, or other life events in order to complete a family tree.

Book Nalley A Southern Family Story

Download or read book Nalley A Southern Family Story written by Evelyn McCollum and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2002-12-26 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nalley, A Southern Family Story is filled with stories that make the Nalley family come alive. This book is not a genealogical record, although genealogy is included. The opening chapter portrays the illustrious life of the enigmatic patriarch, George Burdine Nalley. An active minister in the Wesleyan church for eleven years, he fell from grace because of his involvement with another woman, and he had the audacity to bring the other woman to live in the house with his wife, Emma Burns, and their children. The next twelve chapters depict the lives of the twelve children—nine boys and three girls. Since all of them are deceased, their stories were written by their children as they remember their parents and their own childhoods. These stories give a picture of life in a less sophisticated time in the rural south when people lived off the land and had none of the modern conveniences that we enjoy today. Nalley, A Southern Family Story chronicles 170 years in the life of a family. In one chapter, the dates of births, marriages and deaths of this line of the family are interwoven into national and world events. Another chapter gives statistical information on the numerous family members, including a chronological list of the births, marriages and deaths of the twelve children and ninety-four grandchildren. Newspaper clippings are included of the obituaries of the twelve children and their spouses as well as accounts of the tragic deaths which have occurred. Information on places and events pertinent to the family is recorded. The family reunion which began the year after George Burdine’s untimely death in 1914 and continues to this day. Camp meeting, where families lived for two weeks under conditions even more primitive than at home, while they worshipped their God, got caught up on family news, and renewed acquaintance with old friends. Fairview Methodist Church where many baptisms, weddings and funerals of the Nalley clan took place and where many of them are buried. Central Wesleyan College, which the Rev. G. B. Nalley was instrumental in founding. This is a book that you can sit down and read, but it is more than that. It is a reference book that you can refer to over and over again when you are discussing family, trying to remember who was older, who married first, when someone died, and the endless number of other facts and fallacies that we Nalleys talk and argue about when we get together. In addition, this book is a social history of the way life was lived “in those days” as Daddy used to say. When I think of how much change has occurred in the last one hundred years, I am grateful that we have this written record of how our forefathers and foremothers actually lived. Here it is, as complete as I can make it—the history of the George Burdine and Emma Burns Nalley family. I hope you enjoy reading it and referring to it as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. If you have a drop of Nalley blood flowing through your veins, you will want to own a copy of this book for your library.

Download or read book T T Clark Companion to Methodism written by Charles Yrigoyen Jr and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an invaluable handbook on Methodism containing an introduction, dictionary of key terms, and concentrates on key themes, methodology and research problems for those interested in studying the origins and development of the history and theology of world Methodism. The literature describing the history and development of Methodism has been growing as scholars and general readers have become aware of its importance as a world church with approximately 40 million members in 300 Methodist denominations in 140 nations. The tercentenary celebrations of the births of its founders, John and Charles Wesley, in 2003 and 2007 provided an additional focus on the evolution of the movement which became a church.
