Book excerpt: Cette thèse traite du problème de la conception et de la réalisation d'un système de vision par ordinateur pour la reconnaissance de structures sur des pièces calcifiées (otolithes et statolithes), ceci en vue de la détermination de l'âge et de paramètres de croissance de poissons et de céphalopodes. L’analyse en routine des cernes de croissance des tissus durs chez les animaux, activité actuellement assurée par des opérateurs humains, représente pour les biologistes un travail lent, lourd, fastidieux, et peu précis car sujet à erreur humaine. L’utilisation de techniques de traitement d'images et de reconnaissance de formes conduirait à limiter l'intervention de l'opérateur et à standardiser les méthodologies développées. Dans une première partie : nous passons brièvement en revue la question de la perception de la continuité globale de structures en vision humaine. Notamment, nous nous intéressons aux modèles conceptuels de l'acuité perceptive. En présentant ensuite les divers travaux constituant la base des dispositifs de la vision artificielle, nous soulignons les points à notre avis essentiels à prendre en considération lors de la conception et de la mise au point d'un systeme de vision artificielle. Après, nous étudions les méthodologies en vision par ordinateur en vue du choix d'un système (architecture et méthode de traitement). Dans la deuxième partie : nous commençons par présenter les caractéristiques des images à traiter. Aussi, à partir de l'analyse de la démarche du lecteur expert de pièces calcifiées, nous exposons les données biologiques fondamentales pour l'introduction de connaissances a priori dans les méthodes de traitement à développer. Nous présentons ensuite les différentes techniques de prétraitement développées pour l'application considérée. À ce niveau, nous portons une attention particulière au problème du choix de l'algorithme de prétraitement avec le bon paramétrage, étant données une image et une application particulières. Concernant les techniques de segmentation d'images à traiter nous étudions d'abord la méthodologie traditionnelle de détection de contours par opérateurs locaux et nous montrons l'absence d'une perception globale de la continuité des structures à détecter.
