Book The Coordinate Free Approach to Gauss Markov Estimation

Download or read book The Coordinate Free Approach to Gauss Markov Estimation written by H. Drygas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes originate from a couple of lectures which were given in the Econometric Workshop of the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics (CORE) at the Catholic University of Louvain. The participants of the seminars were recommended to read the first four chapters of Seber's book [40], but the exposition of the material went beyond Seber's exposition, if it seemed necessary. Coordinate-free methods are not new in Gauss-Markov estimation, besides Seber the work of Kolmogorov [11], SCheffe [36], Kruskal [21], [22] and Malinvaud [25], [26] should be mentioned. Malinvaud's approach however is a little different from that of the other authors, because his optimality criterion is based on the ellipsoid of c- centration. This criterion is however equivalent to the usual c- cept of minimal covariance-matrix and therefore the result must be the same in both cases. While the usual theory gives no indication how small the covariance-matrix can be made before the optimal es timator is computed, Malinvaud can show how small the ellipsoid of concentration can be made: it is at most equal to the intersection of the ellipssoid of concentration of the observed random vector and the linear space in which the (unknown) expectation value of the observed random vector is lying. This exposition is based on the observation, that in regression ~nalysis and related fields two conclusions are or should preferably be applied repeatedly.

Book Handbook of Econometrics

Download or read book Handbook of Econometrics written by James J. Heckman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 1057 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As conceived by the founders of the Econometric Society, econometrics is a field that uses economic theory and statistical methods to address empirical problems in economics. It is a tool for empirical discovery and policy analysis. The chapters in this volume embody this vision and either implement it directly or provide the tools for doing so. This vision is not shared by those who view econometrics as a branch of statistics rather than as a distinct field of knowledge that designs methods of inference from data based on models of human choice behavior and social interactions. All of the essays in this volume and its companion volume 6A offer guidance to the practitioner on how to apply the methods they discuss to interpret economic data. The authors of the chapters are all leading scholars in the fields they survey and extend.Handbook of Econometrics is now available online at ScienceDirect — full-text online from volume 1 onwards.*Part of the renowned Handbooks in Economics Series *Updates and expands the exisiting Handbook of Econometrics volumes *An invaluable reference written by some of the world's leading econometricians.

Book Contribution to Applied Statistics

Download or read book Contribution to Applied Statistics written by Ziegler and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of all emphasis on objectivity, a scientific discipline needs for its development outstanding research workers with exceptional personal qualities. A scientist with these qualities is honoured here, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, by his pupils, friends and colleagues: Arthur Linder is respected as a researcher, advisor and teacher in the field of Applied Statistics. Professor Dr. Dr. h. c. A. Linder has demonstrated the utility of statistical methods in science and technology; these are recognised today as being essen tial for an objective evaluation of data. His contacts with Sir R.A. Fisher, C. 1. Bliss, G.M. Cox, W.G. Cochran, P.C. Mahalanobis and many other ex perts, have helped him to achieve his almost legendary authority on sampling and on the evaluation of statistical data. Linder has won many friends and adherents to the cause of Biometry, Econometry and Technometry, firstly through his teaching activity at the universities of Berne, Geneva and Lausanne and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, and as visiting lecturer at the Indian Statistical Institute, the International Statistical Education Centre in Calcutta, the Uni versity of North Carolina and the University of Natal in Durban, secondly through his contributions to the literature as author of the monographs 'Sta tistische Methoden' and 'Planen und Auswerten von Versuchen', as editor of METRIKA and co-editor of other journals, and thirdly through his active collaboration in the founding of The Biometric Society, to the presidency of.

Book Pseudosolution of Linear Functional Equations

Download or read book Pseudosolution of Linear Functional Equations written by Alexander S. Mechenov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-03-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the book there are introduced models and methods of construction of pseudo-solutions for the well-posed and ill-posed linear functional equations circumscribing models passive, active and complicated experiments. Two types of the functional equations are considered: systems of the linear algebraic equations and linear integral equations. Methods of construction of pseudos6lutions are developed in the presence of passive right-hand side errors for two types of operator errors: passive measurements and active representation errors of the operator, and all their combinations. For the determined and stochastic models of passive experiments the method of the least distances of construction of pseudosolutions is created, the maximum likelihood method of construction of pseudosolutions is applied for active experiments, and then methods for combinations of models of regression, of passive and of active experiments are created. We have constructed regularized variants of these methods for systems of the linear algebraic equations with the degenerated matrices and for linear integral equations of the first kind. In pure mathematics, the solution techniques of the functional equations with exact input data more often are studied. In applied mathematics, problem consists in construction of pseudosolutions, that is, solution of the hctional equations with perturbed input data. Such problem in many cases is incomparably more complicated. The book is devoted to a problem of construction of a pseudosolution (the problem of a parameter estimation) in the following fundamental sections of applied mathematics: confluent models passive, active and the every possible mixed experiments.

Book A Structural Analysis of Expectation Formation

Download or read book A Structural Analysis of Expectation Formation written by Marc Ivaldi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using panel data of individual firms drawn from French surveys, a structural analysis is developed to study the formation of production plans and the rationality of expectations. The production decision of a firm is defined as the optimal solution of a dynamic stochastic optimization problem. The empirical work amounts to recovering the structural parameters characterizing the model of the firm from estimates of the derived decision rule. The preceding analysis of production plans is based on the assumption that firms are rational. To justify this assumption, direct tests offer evidence that the Rational Expectations Hypothesis may not be rejected for quantity variables.

Book Macromodels of the National Economy of the USSR

Download or read book Macromodels of the National Economy of the USSR written by V.V. Kolbin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid methodological progress is now taking place in the USSR in the solution of the problems of developing both society and economy. A considerable proportion of the total methodological problems of the USSR economy are dealt with in the present monograph. This work is intended for economists, managers and specialists in methodology, sociology and applied mathematics, and it may also be useful to researchers into operations as well as to politicians, philosophers and wide circles of readers interested in the present and future problems of the USSR economy. Readers will find here, I hope, answers to many questions. At the same time this work can be used as a manual for students and post-graduate students investigating countries with centrally planned economies. For his monograph the author has used the material originally developed for a special course of lectures called "Macromodels of Planning". Some sections of the book correspond to the subjects of courses on "Mathematical Programming" and "Operations Research" as well as to the subjects of special courses on "Methods of Vector Optimization", "Stochastic Programming", "Parametric Programming" and "Decomposition Methods of Programming", read by the author from 1971 to 1976 to the graduates and post graduates of the department of applied mathematics and management processes at Leningrad University.

Book Aggregation in Economic Research

Download or read book Aggregation in Economic Research written by J. van Daal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our interest in problems of aggregation originates from about seven years ago when we became involved in research in the field of applied microeconomics. To our astonishment a vast majority of researchers in this area took it for granted that their, mostly thoroughly derived, micro models could meaningfully be confronted with per capita data. Nany of them did not even realize - at least they gave no utterance to it - that applying macro data in micro models raises considerable problems. Those who did mention the difficulty, almost always belittled its importance. Fortunately, there are noteworthy exceptions. Thinking about aggregation raises at least two questions: "Why or why not aggregate?" and "How to aggregate and, in particular, to what degree?" General answers to these questions can only be given in uninformative wording (as many assertions in economics): one aggregates for the sake of tractability, because of the lack of (individual) data, to avoid or to reduce multicollineartiy, to save degrees of freedom; one abstains from aggregation to avoid loss of information, to avoid aggregation biases and one aggregates such and to such degree as to bypass or reduce the drawbacks mentioned above.

Book Regression and factor analysis applied in econometrics

Download or read book Regression and factor analysis applied in econometrics written by J.H.F. Schilderinck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the methods and practical uses of regression and factor analysis. An exposition is given of ordinary, generalized, two- and three-stage estimates for regression analysis, the method of principal components being applied for factor analysis. When establishing an econometric model, the two ways of analysis complement each other. The model was realized as part of the 'Interplay' research project concerning the economies of the European Common Market countries at the Econometrics Department of the Tilburg School of Economics. The Interplay project aims at: a. elaborating more or less uniformly defined and estimated models; b. clarifying the economic structure and the economic policy possible with the linked models of the European Community countries. Besides the model for the Netherlands published here, the models for Belgium, Italy, West Germany and the United Kingdom are ready for linking and for publishing later on. The econometric model presented in this book and upon which the Interplay model is based comprises eleven structural and twenty-one definitional equations; it is estimated with ordinary, two- and three-stage least squares. The analysis of the model is directed at eliminating multicollinearity, accor ding to D.E. Farrar's and R. Glauber's method. In practice, however, complete elimination of multicollinearity leads to an exclusion of certain relations which is not entirely satisfactory. Economic relations can be dealt with more fully by analyzing the variables involved in detail by factor analysis. In this study factor analysis is also a suitable method for a comparative analysis of different periods.

Book Conference on Statistical Science Honouring the Bicentennial of Stefano Franscini s Birth

Download or read book Conference on Statistical Science Honouring the Bicentennial of Stefano Franscini s Birth written by Carlo Malaguerra and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conference on "Statistical Science", held in Monte Verita (Switzerland) on 18/20 November 1996, was intended to honour the memory of Stefano Franscini at the occasion of the bicentennial of his birth (1796-1996). It was jointly organized by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, the Swiss Federal Statistical Office and the University of Geneva. These proceedings gather a selected collection of contributions presented by statisticians from universities, research institutes and national statistical services of Europe, North America and Asia. Part I focuses on a historical appreciation of Stefano Franscini's life and work. Authors develop a deep analysis of the historical context, the political action, the scientific achievement and the intellectual legacy of the founding father of Swiss official statistics. The reader thus has an opportunity to appreciate the various facets of this exceptional man who not only drew the first comprehensive statistical portrait of Switzerland but also established the foundations for modem educational and political institutions. Part II groups papers on the relationship between statistical science and official statistics. Authors analyse the historical background, current context and new perspectives of co-operation between scientific research and official statistical services. They show how the relationship between both partners has evolved over the past decades, stressing certain prerequisites and opportunities for effective of rigourous interaction between academia's scientific activity and the production statistical information.
