Book Metallurgical Applications of Bacterial Leaching and Related Microbiological Phenomena

Download or read book Metallurgical Applications of Bacterial Leaching and Related Microbiological Phenomena written by Lawrence Murr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallurgical Applications of Bacterial Leaching and Related Microbiological Phenomena is a collection of papers presented at the International Symposium on Metallurgical Applications of Bacterial Leaching and Related Microbiological Phenomena, held in New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology, Socorro, New Mexico on August 3-5, 1977. This book is organized into three sections encompassing 26 chapters. Section I emphasizes the role of microorganisms in the kinetics of leaching and similar metallurgical processes by stimulating a strong interaction between microbiologists and metallurgists. This section also discusses the basic study of microorganisms, in the strictly microbiological aspects of metal extraction and attendant conversion kinetics, and in the practical, engineering aspects of extraction. Section II deals with the microbiological leaching of waste materials, such as fly ash, slags, and jarosite-type leach residues. This section also describes a microbiological process for the recovery of sulfur in its elemental form from sulfate and sulfuric acid-containing aqueous wastes that are to be released in the environment. A microbiological leaching process for the removal of inorganic sulfur contained in coal is also described in this section. Considerable chapters in Section III are devoted to the specific applications of bacterial leaching, the optimization of the leaching conditions, and process optimization based upon economic considerations. This section also examines the advantages of large-scale testing compared with laboratory-testing. Workers in the fields of microbiology, biophysics, biochemistry, mineral processing and preparation, extractive and/or chemical metallurgy, mining engineering, and many related disciplines, including chemical and bioengineering, will find this book invaluable.

Book Advances in Fine Particles Processing

Download or read book Advances in Fine Particles Processing written by John Hanna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processing of fine particles has presented numerous challenges to scientists and engineers for many years. Considerable progress has al ready been made in meeting these challenges across various fields of applications around the world. Research on every aspect of fine particle processing has gained momentum in recent years, resulting in the development of new processes, improved products, and better understanding of the science and engineering fundamentals of fine particles. This symposium addressed the recent progress in fine particles processing, particularly in the production of minerals for chemicals, pigments and metal production, ceramic materials, and fossil fuels. This book represents the edited proceedings of the International Symposium on Advances in Fine Particles Processing, where selected peer-reviewed papers describe current practices, review the state of the art and report original fundamental and applied research on fine particle production, sizing, characterization of the interface, fluid flow, and interparticle colloidal interactions, leading to dispersion, flocculation and flotation. Processing of fine particles by multi-chemical, physical and biological phenomena has also been addressed. Accordingly, the book consists of seven parts, with each part addressing a specific topic. Part One deals with production of fine particles by comminu tion methods where different milling practices, mathematic modeling and physical chemical control methods are reported. Part Two covers particle flow properties in various fluids. Part Three addresses surface and colloidal phenomena in fine particle processing, while Part Four continues this topic but with emphasis on clay minerals.

Book Biogeochemistry of Ancient and Modern Environments

Download or read book Biogeochemistry of Ancient and Modern Environments written by P. A. Trudinger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of papers presented to the Fourth Internation~l Symposium on Environmental Biogeochemistry (ISEB), and a conference on Biogeochemistry in Relation to Mining Industry and Environmental Pollution (Leaching Conference), held in Canberra, Aust ralia on August 26-31 and September 3-4, 1979, respectively. The ISEB were established to provide "a forum for uninhibited exchange of information and ideas among the biological, chemical, atmospheric and geolorical scientists working in the common area of biogeochemistry, encompassing soil and other earth sciences as well as the hydrosphere and atmosphere", By linking the fourth ISEB with the Leachin~ Conference the scope of discussions was extended to encompass the application of biogeochemical processes to the mining industry. This wide-ranging philosophy is reflected in the breadth and diversity of the subjects covered in this book. The published papers are expanded versions of those presented at the meetings. They have all been scrutinized by at least one referee in addition to the editors. About 20% of the contributions to the meetings are not included, either because authors did not wish to publish or because the papers were not accepted by the editors.

Book Modern Soil Microbiology Second Edition

Download or read book Modern Soil Microbiology Second Edition written by Jan Dirk van Elsas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-12-21 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ten years since the publication of Modern Soil Microbiology, the study of soil microbiology has significantly changed, both in the understanding of the diversity and function of soil microbial communities and in research methods. Ideal for students in a variety of disciplines, this second edition provides a cutting-edge examination of a fascinating discipline that encompasses ecology, physiology, genetics, molecular biology, and biotechnology, and makes use of biochemical and biophysical approaches. The chapters cover topics ranging from the fundamental to the applied and describe the use of advanced methods that have provided a great thrust to the discipline of soil microbiology. Using the latest molecular analyses, they integrate principles of soil microbiology with novel insights into the physiology of soil microorganisms. The authors discuss the soil and rhizosphere as habitats for microorganisms, then go on to describe the different microbial groups, their adaptive responses, and their respective processes in interactive and functional terms. The book highlights a range of applied aspects of soil microbiology, including the nature of disease-suppressive soils, the use of biological control agents, biopesticides and bioremediation agents, and the need for correct statistics and experimentation in the analyses of the data obtained from soil systems.
