Nina Allan, author of The Rift In the aftermath of the Great War, Shirley Fearn dreams of challenging the conventions of rural England, where life is as predictable as the changing of the seasons. The scarred veteran Mr. Tiller, left disfigured by an impossible accident on the battlefields of France, brings with him a message: part prophecy, part warning. As the village prepares for the annual May Day celebrations, where a new queen will be crowned and the future will be reborn again, Shirley must choose: change or renewal?

With this knowledge comes enormous power. Book excerpt: Traveling across space and time to make first contact, explorers discover a terrible predator. Now only a band of time travelers stand between humanity and the long dark. It is the twenty-fifth century. The planet's most ambitious project is Starmind, an Islamic research institute that transfers the minds of volunteers, called Ansibles, across space and time to make first contact with other sentient beings in the universe. Each of the Ansible Stories follows one team of brave minds across the void. These are their reports, their transcripts, their distress calls, the only accounts of what they have found. This edition includes the complete first season of Ansible: Ansible 15715 Ansible 15716 Ansible 15717 Ansible 2 (also known as Ansible: Paradise) REVIEWS "I’m a thug. I read Stephen King all day. Nothing can scare me. This book, however, kind of freaked me out." - Keyoka Kinzy, SciFi Bloggers "Litore's elegant prose seeps into the soul, stoking our fears of dark labyrinths and the loss of self, of having our direst warnings passed off as madness in a cruel and ignorant world. A chilling and masterful tale." - Allison M. Dickson, author of Strings "Stant Litore truly weaves a spellbinding story that leaves the reader feeling vulnerable. It is impossible not to become drawn into the world that Stant created..." - Heather Maloney, examiner.com "Stant Litore's writing is so good and yet so hard to describe. He can be both an angel and a devil all in one. He's an angel for writing such wonderful and thought-provoking stories, and a devil for using those stories to make you want to curl up into a ball and hide." - Must Read Faster "Stant Litore may be SF's premiere poet of loneliness. With the first stories in the Ansible series, he has pulled off an incredible feat, rendering individual tales that sing the ache of desolation in a register entirely their own while simultaneously building a central premise and an accompanying world that’s utterly original, gorgeously pained, and potentially inexhaustible. Before Ansible 15715, I can't remember ever having read a story and immediately started reading it again, but after devouring it twice in rapid succession, I then read it aloud to the first person I could find." - Jason Kirk, author of Reverb and The Other Whites in South Africa

Download or read book Mr Kafka And Other Tales from the Time of the Cult written by Bohumil Hrabal and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wonderful stories of Communist Prague by “the masterly Bohumil Hrabal” (The New Yorker) Never before published in English, the stories in Mr. Kafka and Other Tales from the Time of the Cult were written mostly in the 1950s and present the Czech master Bohumil Hrabal at the height of his powers. The stories capture a time when Czech Stalinists were turning society upside down, inflicting their social and political experiments on mostly unwilling subjects. These stories are set variously in the gas-lit streets of post-war Prague; on the raucous and dangerous factory floor of the famous Poldi steelworks where Hrabal himself once worked; in a cacophonous open-air dance hall where classical and popular music come to blows; at the basement studio where a crazed artist attempts to fashion a national icon; on the scaffolding around a decommissioned church. Hrabal captures men and women trapped in an eerily beautiful nightmare, longing for a world where “humor and metaphysical escape can reign supreme.”

Download or read book Sacrificial Metal written by Esther Lee and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Winner of the Bronze Medal in the 2020 Florida Book Awards for Poetry. In her second poetry collection SACRIFICIAL METAL, Esther Lee's poems offer a meditation through the lens of dance and human movement about the quiet dignities and alienation of illness, caregiving, and living in a racialized body. Part documentary poetics, part mourning diary, part textual choreography, and part nautical-inspired elegy, the poems in SACRIFICIAL METAL serve as inquiries about how we may become socialized or exiled from a community, along with how movement and dance offer possibilities of interconnectedness with one's own body and a sense of collective identity. In SACRIFICIAL METAL, Esther Lee dances with astute curiosity and deep tenderness across the shifting grounds of grief, touch, bearing witness, memory, and our obstinate human instinct for future-planning. With great compassion, Lee's poems remind us that everything human eventually unravels, but her poems remind us too that joy is like tragedy, it occurs--undeniably, relentlessly--every day.â Every breath, every dusk, every dinner, every doctor's visit is at once both tourniquet and arteryâ --just one of many gorgeous truths revealed in these pages. --Sean Dorsey, choreographer/dancer, writer and trans-justice activist I see SACRIFICIAL METAL as a collection of letters to the self as though the self were a familiar stranger who speaks all the same languages, and happens to also be a scientist interested in the nature of time. This is a correspondence in which the world, and a person's understanding of its many forms of data, is rigorously contemplated and recorded. Where am I in your body now, â asks a poem. It's a beautiful question, one that bears repeating. Esther Lee writes worthy poetry that reveals a keen mind, as well as a spirit that is as intelligent as it is compassionate. --Tarfia Faizullah, author of Seam and Registers of Illuminated Villages
Download or read book Silk for Silver written by Anh Tuấan HoÁng and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the political and commercial relations between the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and the Vietnamese kingdom of Tonkin from 1637 until the beginning of the eighteenth century. The VOC exported silk and silk piece-goods from Tonkin to Japan. The author focuses on various aspects of the mutual relationship between the VOC and Tonkin, and how this fitted into the larger picture of the intra-Asian trade. The book reveals the vicissitudes in political relations, and the varying trends in the VOC's import (silver and copper) and export (silk, ceramics, musk, and gold). While examining a great deal of detailed archival materials, the author evaluates Dutch influence on Tonkin's feudal society and economy. The book also offers a fascinating sketch of how the Vietnamese trading elite maximized their own profits by dealing with various western tradesmen, including the English and French.
