Book Metal Metal Bonds and Clusters in Chemistry and Catalysis

Download or read book Metal Metal Bonds and Clusters in Chemistry and Catalysis written by John P. Fackler Jr. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a series of papers and abstracts from the 7th Industry-University Cooperative Chemistry Program symposium held in the spring of 1989 at Texas A&M University. The symposium was larger than previous IUCCP symposia since it also celebrated the 25 years that had elapsed since the initial discovery by F. A. Cotton and his co-workers of the existence of metal-metal quadruple bonds. Cotton's discovery demonstrated that multiple bonding in inorganic systems is not governed by the same constraints observed in organic chemistry regarding s and p orbital involvement. The d orbitals are involved in the multiple bonding description. The quadruple bond involves considerable d orbital overlap between adjacent metal centers. Part I of this series of papers focuses upon the impact of this discovery and describes further contributions to the development of the field. Multiple metal-metal bonding now is known to permeate broad areas of transition metal chemistry. The understanding of metal-metal bonding that developed as a result of the discovery of multiple metal-metal bonding awakened a new chemistry involving metal clusters. Clusters were defined by Cotton to be species containing metal-metal bonding. Clusters in catalysis therefore seemed a logical grouping of papers in this symposium. Clusters play an every increasing role in the control of chemical reactions. Part II of this book describes some of the interesting new developments in this field. In Part III the papers examine the role clusters play in describing and understanding solid state materials.

Book Reactions of Metal Metal Multiple Bonds 8 Forming Mo Mo Quadruple Bonds by Reductive Elimination Alkyl Group Disproportionation in the Reactions of 1 2 Mo2R2 NMe2 4 Compounds M Triple Bond M with Carbon Dioxide and 1 3 Diaryltriazenes

Download or read book Reactions of Metal Metal Multiple Bonds 8 Forming Mo Mo Quadruple Bonds by Reductive Elimination Alkyl Group Disproportionation in the Reactions of 1 2 Mo2R2 NMe2 4 Compounds M Triple Bond M with Carbon Dioxide and 1 3 Diaryltriazenes written by M. H. Chisholm and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addition of either CO2 or 1,3-diaryltriazines to 1,2-Mo2R2(NMe2)4 compounds promotes reductive elimination from the dimetal center by alkyl group disproportionation with a concomittant metal-metal bond order change from three to four when R = an alkyl group having beta-hydrogen atoms. Both reactions proceed through intermediates of the form 1,2-Mo2R2(NMe2)2(chelate)2. The elimination of alkane and alkene is intramolecular and has a formal analogy with that found in mononuclear chemistry, namely beta-hydrogen elimination followed by reductive elimination by carbon-hydrogen bond formation. The detailed pathway leading to this is, however, uncertain. Finally, it should be recognized that it is not necessary to invoke the formation of an intermediate metal-hydride in these reactions. The beta-hydrogen atom of an ethyl ligand could be transferred to the alpha-carbon of the other ethyl ligand through the agency of one of the nitrogen atoms, which could be either a triazenido or dimethyl-amido ligand. In a formal sense this would have analogy with E2 reactions of substituted alkanes. These, and other possibilities, provide us with the stimulus for further studies of reductive eliminations of hydrocarbons from dinuclear metal centers.

Book The Effect of Metal Containing Ligands on the Metal metal Quadruple Bond

Download or read book The Effect of Metal Containing Ligands on the Metal metal Quadruple Bond written by Christopher Blair Durr and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's ever increasing demand for fossil fuels has lead to a renewed focus by the scientific community to develop energy sources that are clean, renewable, and economical. One of the most promising emerging technologies is photovoltaic cells that can turn sunlight directly into energy or into fuels such as methane or hydrogen. In order for these cells to replace preexisting energy sources, it is necessary to increase their efficiency and processability while also curtailing cost. The focus of this work will be on electron donating materials, the main purpose of which is to absorb light and cause charge transfer to occur in the cell. To increase efficiency of donor materials several factors must be considered. Firstly, the material must capture as much of the solar spectrum as possible, which ranges from 400 nm to well over 1200 nm. Thus a material that has a broad, tunable absorption band is key to capturing as much of this light as possible. Secondly, the absorbing material must efficiently absorb photons by having a high molar absorptivity. Lastly, when light hits the donor material there must be a sufficient separation of the electron-hole pair. The material must stay in this charge separated state long enough to undergo charge transfer to an acceptor and thus begin the circuit.
