Book Meta level Architectures and Reflection

Download or read book Meta level Architectures and Reflection written by Pattie Maes and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1988 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book for the first time collects an important part of the research on reflective systems, providing both an introduction to the topic and a reference to research in the field. It contains a selection of the papers presented at the Workshop held in Alghero, Italy, during October 1986, the goal being to bring together researchers in order to discuss the problems arising in the definition and the construction of reflective systems, and to investigate their practical application. The papers in the first part shed some light on the concept of reflection or its origins. Important questions treated in these papers are: What are the issues in computational reflection? How does it relate to the notion of reflection in logic and meta-mathematics? How can reflective systems be categorized? Why is meaning an important issue in reflection and reflection an interesting domain to study meaning? A number of practical realisations of reflective systems are presented in the second part. The papers investigate the problems arising in the construction of reflective systems, and present techniques to solve these. The implementations discussed range from specific systems exhibiting a reflective behaviour e.g. logic-based reasoning systems, rule-based systems, etc., to programming languages providing facilities for the construction of reflective systems (logic programming languages, description-based languages, functional languages, object-oriented and actor languages). Finally, various applications of meta-level architectures and reflection are described.

Book Statistical Inference as Severe Testing

Download or read book Statistical Inference as Severe Testing written by Deborah G. Mayo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mounting failures of replication in social and biological sciences give a new urgency to critically appraising proposed reforms. This book pulls back the cover on disagreements between experts charged with restoring integrity to science. It denies two pervasive views of the role of probability in inference: to assign degrees of belief, and to control error rates in a long run. If statistical consumers are unaware of assumptions behind rival evidence reforms, they can't scrutinize the consequences that affect them (in personalized medicine, psychology, etc.). The book sets sail with a simple tool: if little has been done to rule out flaws in inferring a claim, then it has not passed a severe test. Many methods advocated by data experts do not stand up to severe scrutiny and are in tension with successful strategies for blocking or accounting for cherry picking and selective reporting. Through a series of excursions and exhibits, the philosophy and history of inductive inference come alive. Philosophical tools are put to work to solve problems about science and pseudoscience, induction and falsification.

Book Specification and Transformation of Programs

Download or read book Specification and Transformation of Programs written by Helmut A. Partsch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Specification and transformation of programs" is short for a methodology of software development where, from a formal specification of a problem to be solved, programs correctly solving that problem are constructed by stepwise application of formal, semantics-preserving transformation rules. The approach considers programming as a formal activity. Consequently, it requires some mathematical maturity and, above all, the will to try something new. A somewhat experienced programmer or a third- or fourth-year student in computer science should be able to master most of this material - at least, this is the level I have aimed at. This book is primarily intended as a general introductory textbook on transformational methodology. As with any methodology, reading and understanding is necessary but not sufficient. Therefore, most of the chapters contain a set of exercises for practising as homework. Solutions to these exercises exist and can, in principle, be obtained at nominal cost from the author upon request on appropriate letterhead. In addition, the book also can be seen as a comprehensive account of the particular transformational methodology developed within the Munich CIP project.

Book Verified Software Theories Tools Experiments

Download or read book Verified Software Theories Tools Experiments written by Gary T. Leavens and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-08-12 with total page 225 pages. This third conference is part of the Verified Software Initiative (VSI), which is a 15 year international project that focuses on the scientific and technical challenges of producing verified software. Book Automated Reasoning and Its Applications

Download or read book Automated Reasoning and Its Applications written by Robert Veroff and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors are among the world's leading researchers inautomated reasoning. Their essays cover the theory, software system design, and use of these systems to solve real problems. The primary objective of automated reasoning (which includes automated deduction and automated theorem proving) is to develop computer programs that use logical reasoning for the solution of a wide variety of problems, including open questions. The essays in Automated Reasoning and Its Applications were written in honor of Larry Wos, one of the founders of the field. Wos played a central role in forming the culture of automated reasoning at Argonne National Laboratory. He and his colleagues consistently seek to build systems that search huge spaces for solutions to difficult problems and proofs of significant theorems. They have had numerous notable successes. The contributors are among the world's leading researchers in automated reasoning. Their essays cover the theory, software system design, and use of these systems to solve real problems. Contributors Robert S. Boyer, Shang-Ching Chou, Xiao-Shan Gao, Lawrence Henschen, Deepak Kapur, Kenneth Kunen, Ewing Lusk, William McCune, J Strother Moore, Ross Overbeek, Lawrence C. Paulson, Hantao Zhang, Jing-Zhong Zhang
