Book excerpt: Honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa Torr.) is a shrub or small tree 3 to 12 feet tall. Mesquite has always been a part of the plant community in New Mexico, but was historically confined primarily to water courses and other moist sites. The introduction of domestic livestock, increased control of wildfire, and droughts all gave woody plants a competitive advantage and resulted in changes in rangeland plant composition. Efforts to control mesquite will not produce lasting results without a commitment to sound grazing management. If overgrazing occurs, mesquite or other undesirable vegetation will return to dominate that site. When selecting a mesquite control method, consider the presence of other undesirable plants. Removal of one species can result in the rapid increase of another. As a result, soil moisture does not become available for desirable species. Follow-up treatments on the other undesirable plants may be necessary after mesquite control.

This study explored mesquite control practice and use by Texas landowners and examined factors that influence the decision to treat lands. Data were collected using a survey delivered in one of three ways: by group, by individual, or via the Internet. Generally, landowners treat mesquite to improve lands, regardless of enterprise. Data suggests that when total treatment cost/acre exceeds $45/acre, landowners are reluctant to treat mesquite. Use of individual plant treatment was consistent across owned acreage classes; whereas, broadcast application transitioned from ground to aerial application at greater than 1,000 acres. When selecting an herbicide, landowners prefer effective products, at a low cost, with a high number of species targeted and consistent mortality. Study results offer information for those developing or promoting herbicides.

Book excerpt: The objectives of our study were to determining the effects of velvet mesquite (Prosopis velutina) removal, control of the resulting basal sprouts, and mulching treatments on herbage production (standing biomass) and selected soil chemicals (nutrients) shown to affect herbage production on the Santa Rita Experimental Range. Mesquite control treatments consisted of overstory removal by chain saw with and without control of the resulting basal sprouts. Mulching treatments were applications of mesquite wood chips, commercial compost, or lopped-and-scattered mesquite branchwood. Mesquite removal resulted in increases for total herbage production and the production of native herbaceous species. Production of the nonnative Lehmann lovegrass (Eragrostis lehmanniana), the dominant herbaceous species, was unchanged. The mulching treatments did not affect herbage production. None of the treatments affected soil chemical properties thought to influence herbage production.
