Book Misfit in Love

Download or read book Misfit in Love written by S. K. Ali and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fun and fresh sequel to Saints and Misfits, Janna hopes her brother’s wedding will be the perfect start to her own summer of love, but attractive new arrivals have her more confused than ever. Janna Yusuf is so excited for the weekend: her brother Muhammad’s getting married, and she’s reuniting with her mom, whom she’s missed the whole summer. And Nuah’s arriving for the weekend too. Sweet, constant Nuah. The last time she saw him, Janna wasn’t ready to reciprocate his feelings for her. But things are different now. She’s finished high school, ready for college…and ready for Nuah. It’s time for Janna’s (carefully planned) summer of love to begin—starting right at the wedding. But it wouldn’t be a wedding if everything went according to plan. Muhammad’s party choices aren’t in line with his fiancée’s taste at all, Janna’s dad is acting strange, and her mom is spending more time with an old friend (and maybe love interest?) than Janna. And Nuah’s treating her differently. Just when things couldn’t get more complicated, two newcomers—the dreamy Haytham and brooding Layth—have Janna more confused than ever about what her misfit heart really wants. Janna’s summer of love is turning out to be super crowded and painfully unpredictable.

Book Patron Saint of Misfits

Download or read book Patron Saint of Misfits written by T. Avila and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truth WILL set you free. But first, it makes you crazy. This is not another sweet little inspirational book about faith and blessings--people who get what they pray for and everyone is happy. No. It is about the unspeakable traumas some of us suffer in this fallen world. WHY did that happen? WHAT do I do now? For wounded heart people everywhere. The brokenhearted, orphaned, abused, wounded, desperate, crippled, depressed, homeless, lonely, forgotten, grieving...no matter what we eat, drink, steal, buy, smoke, kiss, see or hear. How to turn your wounds into wings. Because the body remembers, even when our mind hides it all away. And for those who love us anyway. Friends, partners, pastors, priests, neighbors, and counselors. There will be stars in your crown. This book is "nondenominational." Seven syllables--the "number of perfection." Not one church preachin' to the other churches. Just the basic ingredients to have a relationship with the Lord. For believers, atheists, doubters, pew-warmers, and those who stalked off from Him a long time ago. Some things you can't talk about in church. But God is still there, and He loves you. Maybe your story is so dark, you cannot tell anyone, even God? You have a shell that keeps you numb, sometimes irrational. Maybe hating God for it. Maybe afraid He hates you. Alone in our pain, we wonder... Life is so unfair, how can there be a loving God? Why would God love me? Nobody else ever did... Jesus was tortured and rejected too. He didn't deserve it either. Come. It is the reason you were born. Tell Him your story. Listen to His: You are safe. You are loved. You are not alone. Psychology might give us a label. But only God will give us a new name.

Book Weird in a World That s Not

Download or read book Weird in a World That s Not written by Jennifer Romolini and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An honest, sharp-witted, practical guide to help you get and keep the job you want—from an outsider whose been there and done it, a woman who went from being a broke, divorced, college dropout to running some of the biggest websites in the world. Jennifer Romolini started her career as an awkward twenty-seven-year-old misfit, navigated her way through New York media and became a boss—an editor-in-chief, an editorial director, and a vice president—all within little more than a decade. Her book, Weird In A World That’s Not, asserts that being outside-the-norm and achieving real, high-level success are not mutually exclusive, even if the perception of the business world often seems otherwise, even if it seems like only office-politicking extroverts are set up for reward. Part career memoir, part real-world guide, Weird in a World That’s Not offers relatable advice on how to achieve your dreams, even when the odds seem stacked against you. Romolini helps you face down your fears, find a career that’s right for you, and get and keep a job. She tackles practical issues and offers empathetic, clear-cut answers to important questions: How do I navigate the awkwardness of networking? How do I deal with intense office politics? How do I leave my crappy job? How do I learn how to be a boss not just a #boss? And, most importantly: How do I do all this and stay true to who I really am? Authentic, funny, and moving, Weird in a World That’s Not will help you tap into your inner tenacity and find your path, no matter how offbeat you are.

Book Misfit Modernism

Download or read book Misfit Modernism written by Octavio R. González and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-05-07 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Octavio R. González revisits the theme of alienation in the twentieth-century novel, identifying an alternative aesthetic centered on the experience of double exile, or marginalization from both majority and home culture. This misfit modernist aesthetic decenters the mainstream narrative of modernism—which explores alienation from a universal and existential perspective—by showing how a group of authors leveraged modernist narrative to explore minoritarian experiences of cultural nonbelonging. Tying the biography of a particular author to a close reading of one of that author’s major works, González considers in turn Nella Larsen’s Quicksand, Wallace Thurman’s The Blacker the Berry, Jean Rhys’s Quartet, and Christopher Isherwood’s A Single Man. Each of these novels explores conditions of maladjustment within one of three burgeoning cultural movements that sought representation in the greater public sphere: the New Negro movement during the Harlem Renaissance, the 1920s Paris expatriate scene, and the queer expatriate scene in Los Angeles before Stonewall. Using a methodological approach that resists institutional taxonomies of knowledge, González shows that this double exile speaks profoundly through largely autobiographical narratives and that the novels’ protagonists challenge the compromises made by these minoritarian groups out of an urge to assimilate into dominant social norms and values. Original and innovative, Misfit Modernism is a vital contribution to conversations about modernism in the contexts of sexual identity, nationality, and race. Moving beyond the debates over the intellectual legacies of intersectionality and queer theory, González shows us new ways to think about exclusion.

Book American Literary Misfits

Download or read book American Literary Misfits written by D. Berton Emerson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of nineteenth-century American literature has long been tied up with the study of American democracy. Just as some regions in the United States are elevated to stand in for the whole nation—New England is a good example—D. Berton Emerson argues the same is true for American literature of the nineteenth century; a few canonical texts overrepresent the more motley history of American letters. Emerson examines an eclectic group of literary texts that have rarely, if ever, been considered representative of "the nation" because of their unseemly characters or plots, divergence from dominant literary trends of the era, or local particularity. These are his "literary misfits," authors and texts that show different forms of egalitarianism in action that existed outside and even against the dominant liberal narratives of American democracy. Emerson's unique contribution is revealing these texts and the people they represent as rich with political knowledge. This knowledge, he argues, finds its most potent expression in the local. Such texts show us a different kind of democratic politics: one that is egalitarian, disorderly, and radical rather than homogeneous.

Book excerpt: “Understated” and “tasteful” could never be applied to Annie, and that’s just fine with her. A colorful actress with a decades-long career in TV, film, and theater—including a recurring role on Seinfeld and a center-stage spot touring with The Moth—Annie offers her trademark unabashed takes on both everyday and typically taboo topics. Whether she’s sharing her thoughts on the miracle of childbirth (“It’s a miracle that anyone who’s been through it is willing to do it again”), religion (“William Shakespeare was not Jewish; no Jew could write a play called All’s Well That Ends Well”), motherhood, or any other topic, Annie will have you laughing out loud. Underlying the humor are poignant observations that feel particularly relevant today: the importance of kindness and consideration, how we’re all more alike than different, and the freedom to be found in self-acceptance. You’ll put down this book feeling not just lighter but inspired by Annie’s wisdom and insight, gathered over eight decades. Whether you’re seeking raw authenticity in an Insta-perfect world, advice from the grandmother you wish you had, or just a laugh to lighten the load of daily life, The Book of Annie is just the ticket.
