When ex-mercenary Sinclair Alverston spots celebrity chef Callum Turner at a bar, he has no idea how the encounter will completely change his life. Certainly, one slim blond with green eyes and a lot of attitude shouldn’t be able to twist Sinclair completely around his finger. Callum doesn’t know what to think about Sin’s protective, domineering behavior, but the man is hot, so he succumbs to his attraction. When Sinclair tries to take over all aspects of his life, Callum is forced to take a stand and explain to his bossy lover that, although protective instincts are good, obsession will get his ass kicked to the curb. However, when a fan turns into a stalker, Callum has no choice but to let his lover assume control of his security to keep him safe. All he can hope is that, in the long run, their relationship will thrive and Callum can continue tempting Sin.

Download or read book Lucky Breaks written by Yevgenia Belorusets and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Powerful, off-beat stories about women living in the shadow of the now-frozen, now-thawing war in Ukraine Out of the impoverished coal regions of Ukraine known as the Donbass, where Russian secret military intervention coexists with banditry and insurgency, the women of Yevgenia Belorusets’s captivating collection of stories emerge from the ruins of a war, still being waged on and off, ever since the 2014 Revolution of Dignity. Through a series of unexpected encounters, we are pulled into the ordinary lives of these anonymous women: a florist, a cosmetologist, card players, readers of horoscopes, the unemployed, and a witch who catches newborns with a mitt. One refugee tries unsuccessfully to leave her broken umbrella behind as if it were a sick relative; a private caregiver in a disputed zone saves her elderly charge from the angel of death; a woman sits down on International Women’s Day and can no longer stand up; a soldier decides to marry war. Belorusets threads these tales of ebullient survival with a mix of humor, verisimilitude, the undramatic, and a profound Gogolian irony. She also weaves in twenty-three photographs that, in lyrical and historical counterpoint, form their own remarkable visual narrative.

Download or read book Capitalism and Christianity written by Luigino Bruni and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on debates about the religious nature and origins of contemporary European capitalism, this book argues for a distinction between a Northern/Protestant and a Southern/Catholic spirit of capitalism. The first part of the book explores the history of the relationship between capitalism and Christianity. Going back much further than Weber’s “protestant ethic” arguments, it looks at the early centuries of Christianity from the gospels to Augustine and follows the story through the Middle Ages – with special attention devoted to the role of Monasticism and Franciscanism – to modernity. The second part of the book analyses the origin of the “southern spirit of capitalism: before and after Luther and the Calvinist Reformation. It highlights the key features which demonstrate that the Catholic spirit of capitalism is, in fact, different from the Anglo-Saxon spirit. This book will be of interest to readers in history of economic thought, history of capitalism, economic ethics and religious history.

Download or read book The Seduction Narrative in Britain 1747 1800 written by Katherine Binhammer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-24 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth-century literature displays a fascination with the seduction of a virtuous young heroine, most famously illustrated by Samuel Richardson's Clarissa and repeated in 1790s radical women's novels, in the many memoirs by fictional or real penitent prostitutes, and in street print. Across fiction, ballads, essays and miscellanies, stories were told of women's mistaken belief in their lovers' vows. In this book Katherine Binhammer surveys seduction narratives from the late eighteenth century within the context of the new ideal of marriage-for-love and shows how these tales tell varying stories of women's emotional and sexual lives. Drawing on new historicism, feminism, and narrative theory, Binhammer argues that the seduction narrative allowed writers to explore different fates for the heroine than the domesticity that became the dominant form in later literature. This study will appeal to scholars of eighteenth-century literature, social and cultural history, and women's and gender studies.
