Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current estimates suggest that between one and three percent of people living in the United States will receive a diagnosis of mental retardation. Mental retardation, a condition characterized by deficits in intellectual capabilities and adaptive behavior, can be particularly hard to diagnose in the mild range of the disability. The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides income support and medical benefits to individuals with cognitive limitations who experience significant problems in their ability to perform work and may therefore be in need of governmental support. Addressing the concern that SSA's current procedures are consistent with current scientific and professional practices, this book evaluates the process used by SSA to determine eligibility for these benefits. It examines the adequacy of the SSA definition of mental retardation and its current procedures for assessing intellectual capabilities, discusses adaptive behavior and its assessment, advises on ways to combine intellectual and adaptive assessment to provide a complete profile of an individual's capabilities, and clarifies ways to differentiate mental retardation from other conditions.

Book Education Provisions for the Mentally Retarded in Northern India

Download or read book Education Provisions for the Mentally Retarded in Northern India written by Harman Kullar and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is based on field work in three schools catering for mentally retarded children in one north indian city. As background to that research information is provided on the prevalence of mental retardation in India and on the provision of institutions to train teachers and educate students. The legislative framework in which education for the disabled generally, and mentally retarded in particular, is laid out. The thesis includes a brief survey of approaches to caring for the mentally retarded internationally and a more detailed examination of the approaches taken in India; including a short historical section. The data collected during field work consists of one personal story, observations in two of the three schools, interviews with teachers from two of the schools, a completed questionnaire from teachers in each of the schools and a questionnaire given to parents in one of the schools. This data is used to reflect on the question of the extent to which the programs that were observed indicate that the aims of the legislation covering disabled education are actually being realised. Three appendices are included. The first provides a brief survey of the use of the term "mental retardation" as compared to terms such as "intellectual disability". The second provides a summary of an assessment scheme which is widely used in India. The final appendix provides complete data from the surveys and questionnaires, organised in a way to facilitate their comprehension by the interested reader.

Book Neurological Psychiatric and Developmental Disorders

Download or read book Neurological Psychiatric and Developmental Disorders written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain disordersâ€"neurological, psychiatric, and developmentalâ€"now affect at least 250 million people in the developing world, and this number is expected to rise as life expectancy increases. Yet public and private health systems in developing countries have paid relatively little attention to brain disorders. The negative attitudes, prejudice, and stigma that often surround many of these disorders have contributed to this neglect. Lacking proper diagnosis and treatment, millions of individual lives are lost to disability and death. Such conditions exact both personal and economic costs on families, communities, and nations. The report describes the causes and risk factors associated with brain disorders. It focuses on six representative brain disorders that are prevalent in developing countries: developmental disabilities, epilepsy, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and stroke. The report makes detailed recommendations of ways to reduce the toll exacted by these six disorders. In broader strokes, the report also proposes six major strategies toward reducing the overall burden of brain disorders in the developing world.

Book Mental Handicap Among Rural Indian Children

Download or read book Mental Handicap Among Rural Indian Children written by Anima Sen and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1992-12-03 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In view of the paucity of research in the area, the epidemiological study reported in the monograph by Professor Anima Sen is a welcome attempt and is commendable.... The analysis of data has been reported in minute detail. The correlational analysis and factor analysis of the data reveal interesting patters of relationships among different variables for normal and retarded children. These results serve as a springboard for generating a wealth of hypotheses for futher research." --Indian Psychological Abstracts and Reviews "This book, packed with invaluable information, facts and figures, is a comprehensive report of a survey of mentally handicapped children in the villages around New Delhi, the capital of India. . . . There is a proverbial 'Indian gold mine' in the reference section of the book which every 'prospector' in the field would feel obligated to treasure; a list of excellent references related to studies in India is hard to come by. . . . We have no hesitation in recommending this book, a classic in its own right, to academic departments of developmental psychiatry and psychology, social sciences and, in particular, to health and social service planners in developing countries. Perhaps every academic specialising in studies related to children and their development should read it to gain a glimpse of the problems encountered by developmentally disabled children in developing countries." --British Journal of Learning Disabilities Statistics indicate that the proportion of mentally handicapped persons in India is alarmingly high. Based on a path-breaking study of nearly 13,000 children living in the villages around Delhi, Medical Handicap Among Rural Indian Children reveals the ecological factors influencing children's mental development. This volume also identifies important psycho-social factors associated with mental handicap such as nutritional status, parenting, and the mothers' educational levels. The author makes important suggestions for possible intervention strategies for the prevention and amelioration of mental handicap in India and highlights specific roles that can be played out by all concerned with this problem; namely, the family, the community, voluntary agencies, and policy makers. The first study of its kind, Mental Handicap Among Rural Indian Children will be of immense value to psychologists, social workers, government officials, scholars of cultural studies, and all those involved with child development and mental retardation.

Book Equal Treatment for People with Mental Retardation

Download or read book Equal Treatment for People with Mental Retardation written by Martha A. Field and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging in sex, becoming parents, raising children: these are among the most personal decisions we make, and for people with mental retardation, these decisions are consistently challenged, regulated, and outlawed. This book is a comprehensive study of the American legal doctrines and social policies, past and present, that have governed procreation and parenting by persons with mental retardation. It argues persuasively that people with retardation should have legal authority to make their own decisions. Despite the progress of the normalization movement, which has moved so many people with mental retardation into the mainstream since the 1960s, negative myths about reproduction and child rearing among this population persist. Martha Field and Valerie Sanchez trace these prejudices to the eugenics movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They show how misperceptions have led to inconsistent and discriminatory outcomes when third parties seek to make birth control or parenting decisions for people with mental retardation. They also explore the effect of these decisions on those they purport to protect. Detailed, thorough, and just, their book is a sustained argument for reform of the legal practices and social policies it describes.
