Download or read book Using the Creative Arts for Transformational Learning written by Tessa Mendel and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Weaving together theory, personal experience and a deep knowledge of the power of Art to transform individuals and communities, Mendel has written a comprehensive and accessible book that fills the meaning and how-to gap skirted by much of the current discourse around arts for social engagement and community arts. Read this book! Its pages will inspire and guide artists, adult educators, and activists to create meaningful arts-based opportunities for personal and social change.” —Terri Whetstone, Artist and Executive Director, 4Cs Foundation, Nova Scotia “Using the Creative Arts for Transformational Learning is a welcome new resource for all of us working in community-engaged arts. It expresses the difficulties and desires concerning the combination of personal and social/political creative expression with a refreshing mix of subtle thought, personal experience and hands-on advice. Tessa Mendel responds to matters at the heart of our work – boldly asking a question that often gets side-stepped: how exactly does art-making cause change? In responding to this question, she succeeds in the delicate task of offering a coherent analysis and approach that illuminates theory and assists practice without being prescriptive. I know that I will be referring to, citing and recommending this book for years to come, and I’m proud that Jumblies is able to help publish and promote it.” —Ruth Howard, Artistic Director, Jumblies Theatre, Toronto “Part memoir, part work-book, part-theory, part exercise-guide, this is a must-read and must-use book for any arts practitioner interested in personal and social change. As a visual arts university instructor, as an individual practicing visual artist, and as a community arts facilitator, I will be guided by the principles and deepening learning I found in this book.” —Rose Adams, Artist and Educator, Foundation Faculty, NSCAD University

Book March of the Falsettos

Download or read book March of the Falsettos written by William Finn and published by Samuel French, Inc.. This book was released on 1981 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: March of the Falsettos" is the title song of this act of the show. William Finn planned on calling the show "The Pettiness of Misogyny", but then he decided to go with a less direct and more subtle title, calling it "March of the Falsettos". But what does the title mean? The central theme of the show is the characters lack of maturity (as they also state themselves in this song) and their journey of growing out of their childish behavior. Something that for instance Marvin needs to do to be the father Jason needs. Jason, whose voice hasn't yet changed, sings an octave higher than the other three men throughout the show. This is the only song, that all four men sing in the same register, since Marvin, Medel and Whizzer sing in the falsetto, losing the symbol of manhood - their changed voices. None of these men have grown up yet. All of them are still very self-centered, self-involved and insist on getting whatever they want. The "March of the Falsettos" is their journey from childhood to becoming adults.

Book Angels in the American Theater

Download or read book Angels in the American Theater written by Robert A Schanke and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2007-03-07 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angels in the American Theater: Patrons, Patronage, and Philanthropy examines the significant roles that theater patrons have played in shaping and developing theater in the United States. Because box office income rarely covers the cost of production, other sources are vital. Angels—financial investors and backers—have a tremendous impact on what happens on stage, often determining with the power and influence of their money what is conceived, produced, and performed. But in spite of their influence, very little has been written about these philanthropists. Composed of sixteen essays and fifteen illustrations, Angels in the American Theater explores not only how donors became angels but also their backgrounds, motivations, policies, limitations, support, and successes and failures. Subjects range from millionaires Otto Kahn and the Lewisohn sisters to foundation giants Ford, Rockefeller, Disney, and Clear Channel. The first book to focus on theater philanthropy, Angels in the American Theater employs both a historical and a chronological format and focuses on individual patrons, foundations, and corporations.

Book The Cinema of Hal Hartley

Download or read book The Cinema of Hal Hartley written by Steven Rybin and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of nearly thirty years, Hal Hartley has cultivated a reputation as one of America's most steadfastly independent film directors. From his breakthrough films – The Unbelievable Truth (1989), Trust (1990), and Simple Men (1992) – to his recently completed 'Henry Fool' trilogy, Hartley has honed a rigorous, deadpan, and instantly recognizable film style informed by both European modernism and playful revisions of Classical Hollywood genres. Featuring new essays on this important director and his films, this collection explores Hartley's work from a variety of aesthetic, cultural, and economic contexts, while also looking closely at his collaborations with actors, the contexts of his authorial reputation, his reworking of the romantic comedy and other genres, and the shifting economics of his filmmaking. This book, up-to-date through Hartley's latest film, Ned Rifle (2014), includes new scholarship on the director's early work as well as reflections on his cinema in connection with new theories and approaches to independent filmmaking. Covering the entire trajectory of his career, including both his features and short films, the book also includes new readings of several of Hartley's seminal films, including Amateur (1994), Flirt (1995), and Henry Fool (1997).
