Book Memory of a Stream Gandhabati

Download or read book Memory of a Stream Gandhabati written by Piyush Das and published by Copal Publishing Group. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the request of Himalaya, Ganga decided to flow in certain parts of Ekamra Kshetra (Bhubaneswar). By constantly carrying the fragrance of many scented flowers, the river is called as Gandhabati. Gandhabati, now-a-days called as gandha nala (a drain which stinks), has immense religious/mythological, ecological significance. Its association to various other tangible and intangible resources are also significant. But today this river/stream has been abandoned to a status of a drain. Rather than looking into histriography of a place, it is more relevant to look into the memory of the same. In this process one tries to see and understand various layers of time and its byproducts overlapped with different perceptions. In the case of this water stream, one can disintegrate its memory into natural system memory, mythological memory, associational memory and built memory. Once disintegrated, one can see overlaps of various attributes of memory in the form of diverse ranges of tangible and intangible heritage resources. This book is an attempt to map and document various tangible and intangible heritage resources associated to the Gandhabati stream. In the process the sacred cultural landscape of Ekamra Kshetra (Bhubaneswar) is understood.

Book Cultural Constellations Place Making and Ethnicity in Eastern India c 1850 1927

Download or read book Cultural Constellations Place Making and Ethnicity in Eastern India c 1850 1927 written by Swarupa Gupta and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Cultural Constellations, Place-Making and Ethnicity in Eastern India, c. 1850-1927, Swarupa Gupta outlines a fresh paradigm moving beyond stereotypical representations of eastern India as a site of ethnic fragmentation. The book traces unities by exploring intersections between (1) cultural constellations; (2) place-making and (3) ethnicity. Centralising place-making, it tells the story of how people made places, mediating caste / religious / linguistic contestations. It offers new meanings of ‘region’ in Eastern Indian and global contexts by showing how an interregional arena comprising Bengal, Assam and Orissa was forged. Using historical tracts, novels, poetry and travelogues, the book argues that commonalities in Eastern India were linked to imaginings of Indian nationhood. The analysis contains interpretive strategies for mediating federalist separatisms and fragmentation in contemporary India.

Book excerpt: In this informative new book, Ravi Kalia continues his examination of the planning of Indian cities begun with his earlier study of Chandigarh. Here, Kalia makes systematic inquiries into the political circumstances that brought about modern Bhubaneswar, the capital of the state of Orissa, to reveal the historical and social circumstances that shaped the city. In this account, Kalia brilliantly shows the interplay of indigenous religious forces, regional loyalty, and Western secular ideas in the context of twentieth-century international architecture and planning movements. This book will prove invaluable to historians, architects, planners, sociologists, and scholars interested in India, as well as those interested in urban planning in developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is a timeless land of dynamic change and huge diversity. The social and political evolution over the centuries has greatly enriched the Indian culture and has given rise to great traditions and heritage. Its glorious history tells the tales of its prosperity despite destruction due to invasion by outside forces. This prosperity shines all over India especially, in palaces, temples and in many other monuments. More spectacular are the ruins of ancient India, which are still surviving to eagerly tell their stories to the patient listeners. The beauty of the sculptures and temple architecture of India are unparalleled; so are its natural beauty and its wild life. This book presents the travel experience of a couple that visits India to rediscover and explore the glorious vistas of the bygone era. They attempt to unravel the marvels of ancient India by digging inio the history, mythology and legends of every place they visit. This book is essentially a collection of travel stories presented in the fashion of a fiction, but with authentic facts and figures. Starting from the capital New Delhi and the exotic Himalayan towns of Haridwar and Hrishikesh, the travel continues to the colourful state of Orissa and then to the historical wonders and the magnificent sites of Karnataka and finally to the fascinating state of Tamil Nadu that gleams with vibrant spirituality around its countless temples. The reader will roam freely in the ruins, in the palaces and among the gorgeous temples with towering gopurams. The classic account of these travels allows the reader to stand up in a place where the present meets the past bridging time and space and surmounting all barriers, and to behold the most impressive evidence of the creative ability of the human mind.
