Book excerpt: The heartbreaking story of college athlete Madison Holleran, whose life and death by suicide reveal the struggle of young people suffering from mental illness today in this #1 New York Times Sports and Fitness bestseller *Instant New York Times Bestseller* #1 New York Times Monthly Sports and Fitness bestseller If you scrolled through the Instagram feed of 19-year-old Maddy Holleran, you would see a perfect life: a freshman at an Ivy League school, recruited for the track team, who was also beautiful, popular, and fiercely intelligent. This was a girl who succeeded at everything she tried, and who was only getting started. But when Maddy began her long-awaited college career, her parents noticed something changed. Previously indefatigable Maddy became withdrawn, and her thoughts centered on how she could change her life. In spite of thousands of hours of practice and study, she contemplated transferring from the school that had once been her dream. When Maddy's dad, Jim, dropped her off for the first day of spring semester, she held him a second longer than usual. That would be the last time Jim would see his daughter. WHAT MADE MADDY RUN began as a piece that Kate Fagan, a columnist for espnW, wrote about Maddy's life. What started as a profile of a successful young athlete whose life ended in suicide became so much larger when Fagan started to hear from other college athletes also struggling with mental illness. This is the story of Maddy Holleran's life, and her struggle with depression, which also reveals the mounting pressures young people, and college athletes in particular, face to be perfect, especially in an age of relentless connectivity and social media saturation.

Book excerpt: A man with three different names ties together the stars of professional wrestling, country music, and the New York Mets. John Arezzi was a lifelong Mets fan who dreamed of a job in baseball. In 1981, he took a job with the Mets Class A team in North Carolina. But Arezzi had another love: professional wrestling. He ran a fan club for the villainous “Classy” Freddie Blassie as a teenager, then progressed to wrestling photographer, and finally even stepped into the ring himself as John Anthony. Eventually he escaped to pursue a new life in altogether different world: country music. After adopting a new name, John Alexander, his many accomplishments include discovering both Patty Loveless and (decades later) Kelsea Ballerini. But wrestling is tough to shake … In the 1990s, Arezzi hosted the pioneering radio talk show Pro Wrestling Spotlight. He also ran the first major conventions, assembling a wrestling who’s who to meet with fans. He promoted shows, both at home and abroad, and was a key figure behind importing lucha libre into America. Mat Memories is Arezzi’s chance to hold the mic, and he holds nothing back — he names names and tells the untold behind-the-scenes stories: from the ring, the stage, and the diamond.

Book A Tale of Two Cities

  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book A Tale of Two Cities written by Erin Boles and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This work explores the collective memories of Madison, Georgia, and Port Gibson, Mississippi, by examining the images of the towns presented in their tourist industries. Both claim that during the Civil War, a general of the Union army declared the town too beautiful to burn, sparing the antebellum buildings of both towns while others suffered wartime devastation and destruction. Today, the leaders of both towns employ the image of an idyllic and whitewashed past through the preservation of their antebellum buildings as means of attracting tourists as well as pacifying underlying tensions present in the town. The significant repercussion of this is that any countermemories of the history of the towns that contradict the specific historic images presented to tourists are silenced through omission. The importance of this work is that it investigates, through two case studies, the relationship between the two prominent collective memories constructed in the South, that of the dominant white collective memory and the often forgotten and/or suppressed black countermemory.

Book Civil War Talks

Download or read book Civil War Talks written by George S. Bernard and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George S. Bernard was a Petersburg lawyer and member of the 12th Virginia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Over the course of his life, Bernard wrote extensively about his wartime experiences and collected accounts from other veterans. In 1892, he published War Talks of Confederate Veterans, a collection of firsthand accounts focusing on the battles and campaigns of the 12th Virginia that is widely read to this day. Bernard prepared a second volume but was never able to publish it. After his death in 1912, his papers became scattered or simply lost. But a series of finds, culminating with the discovery of a cache of papers in Roanoke in 2004, have made it possible to reconstruct a complete manuscript of the unpublished second volume. The resulting book, Civil War Talks, contains speeches, letters, Bernard's wartime diary, and other firsthand accounts of the war not only by veterans of the Confederacy, such as General William Mahone, but by Union veterans as well. Their personal stories cover the major military campaigns in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania--Seven Pines, Malvern Hill, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, and Appomattox. For the general reader, this volume offers evocative testimonies focusing on the experiences of individual soldiers. For scholars, it provides convenient access to many accounts that, until now, have not been widely available or have been simply unknown.

Book excerpt: Using the media's coverage of the death of Princess Diana as a starting point, the author draws on the effects of new technologies, the role of the star system, the nature of public surveillance, and the development of media conglomerates to explain why Hollywood has become so repetitive. Discussing films such as Titanic the author argues that current films replay the same plotlines with greater wizardry and less humanity than those of fifty years ago and that our culture is fascinated with images of disaster.
