Documented analysis including x-ray examination, forensics and recognized paintings by Whistler's followers will confirm this portrait and "Harmony in Black, No10," with x-ray revealing two lost paintings. Book Memories of James McNeill Whistler the Artist

Download or read book Memories of James McNeill Whistler the Artist written by T. R. Way and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of James McNeill Whistler the Artist In writing these few reminiscences, my intention has been to try to recall the picture of the man in his work as I knew him during many years. Soon after Whistler's death the Art Workers' Guild devoted an evening to his memory, and gathered together a small but very fine collection, representing all sides of his pictorial work, in Clifford's Inn Hall. This little book is based on a paper which I read at that meeting; and I have tried to bring out the side of his character which appealed to me most and to show him as the keen, untiring student and worker, rather than the brilliant figure in society or the keen fighter. A word as to the illustrations, which are mostly facsimiles of sketches by Whistler. Some are selected because they seem to me to show the artist thinking aloud as it were; many of these were pinned to the wall in his studio for a number of years; indeed, he did not part with them until some time in the 'eighties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of James McNeill Whistler the Artist The lithograph of the Little White Girl was drawn many years since with Whistler's knowledge from a photograph which he gave my father in the 'seventies. I had a habit of making little pastel notes of his pictures, which Whistler himself encouraged; and I have made lithographs of such as are associated with the text. Book excerpt: The 21st century's first major academic reassessment of Impressionism, providing a new generation of scholars with a comprehensive view of critical conversations Presenting an expansive view of the study of Impressionism, this extraordinary volume breaks new thematic ground while also reconsidering established questions surrounding the definition, chronology, and membership of the Impressionist movement. In 34 original essays from established and emerging scholars, this collection considers a diverse range of developing topics and offers new critical approaches to the interpretation of Impressionist art. Focusing on the 1860s to 1890s, this Companion explores artists who are well-represented in Impressionist studies, including Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Cassatt, as well as Morisot, Caillebotte, Bazille, and other significant yet lesser-known artists. The essays cover a wide variety of methodologies in addressing such topics as Impressionism's global predominance at the turn of the 20th century, the relationship between Impressionism and the emergence of new media, the materials and techniques of the Impressionists, and the movement's exhibition and reception history. Part of the acclaimed Wiley Blackwell Companions to Art History series, this important new addition to scholarship in this field: Reevaluates the origins, chronology, and critical reception of French Impressionism Discusses Impressionism's account of modern identity in the contexts of race, nationality, gender, and sexuality Explores the global reach and influence of Impressionism in Europe, the Middle East, East Asia, North Africa, and the Americas Considers Impressionism's relationship to the emergence of film and photography in the 19th century Considers Impressionism's representation of the private sphere as compared to its depictions of public issues such as empire, finance, and environmental change Addresses the Impressionist market and clientele, period criticism, and exhibition displays from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century Features original essays by academics, curators, and conservators from around the world, including those from France, Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Turkey, and Argentina The Wiley Blackwell Companion to Impressionism is an invaluable text for students and academics studying Impressionism and late 19th century European art, Post-Impressionism, modern art, and modern French cultural history.

Book Whistler and His Mother

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah Walden
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9780803248113
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Whistler and His Mother written by Sarah Walden and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James McNeill Whistler painted his mother on impulse, when she came to London to escape the American Civil War, forcing him to evict his mistress from his house. It is hard to imagine a greater contrast than that between Whistler's outrageously flamboyant life in London--where he famously befriended Oscar Wilde and Dante Gabriel Rossetti--and the subdued, touchingly melancholic depiction of his Puritan mother he entitled "Arrangement in Grey and Black." This portrait has become one of the world's best-known paintings and an American icon, yet we know remarkably little about it. While restoring the painting for the Louvre, Sarah Walden became intrigued by the extraordinary and complex history of the painting, which had never been fully explored. From French, British, and American sources, Walden uncovers the intersections between Whistler's flawed genius, his struggle for recognition, his troubled relationship with his mother and mistresses, and the unprecedented historical response to his greatest work. Walden's findings read like a detective story, and her controversial and progressive views on art restoration combine with biography and criticism to create a gripping narrative that skillfully weaves history and aesthetics into a seamless tapestry.
