Book The Beauty of the Days Gone By

Download or read book The Beauty of the Days Gone By written by Jason Stone and published by Greenleaf Book Group. This book was released on 2024-06-18 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1926, ninety year-old Charles Goodnight faces the reality that his life will end soon. His accomplishments are legendary as one of the early cattlemen to blaze the Goodnight-Loving Trail and the first to settle permanently in Comancheria. J. Evetts Haley, a young historian collecting folklore for the local historical society, forges a close bond with Goodnight as the elder plainsman shares the memories of his life. As Goodnight fights the urge to free his conscience of a dark secret, his reminiscences turn to the events leading up to the Civil War and during Reconstruction when the frontier of Texas is in chaos. And amidst this chaos emerges Goodnight’s close friend and former Texas Ranger R. L. Terry, who returns home to find his house in flames, his wife mortally wounded, and his two boys hauled away into captivity. As his eldest boy becomes fully Indianized under the tutelage of Quanah Parker, fighting desperately to defend their homelands in the Indian Wars of the 1860s and 70s, R.L.’s desperate search for his sons parallels the relentless passing of the old ways and leads in the end to a revelatory meeting of lives destined from the beginning. Stone’s breathtaking storytelling pushes the conventions of historical fiction, deftly weaving the tragic captivity narrative into the calamitous clash of cultures that defined the settlement of the American West. Hailed by critics, The Beauty of the Days Gone By announces Jason Stone as a major new writer of American fiction.

Book Into the Gray Zone

Download or read book Into the Gray Zone written by Adrian Owen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From renowned neuroscientist Adrian Owen comes a thrilling, heartbreaking tale of discovery in one of the least-understood scientific frontiers: the twilight region between full consciousness and brain death. People who inhabit this middle region called the 'gray zone' have sustained traumatic brain injuries or are the victims of stroke or degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Many are oblivious to the outside world, and their doctors and families often believe they're incapable of thought. But a sizable number of patients--as many as twenty percent--are experiencing something different: intact minds adrift within damaged brains and bodies. In 2006, Adrian Owen led a team that discovered this lost population and made medical history, provoking an ongoing debate among scientists, physicians, and philosophers about the meaning, value, and purpose of life. In Into the Gray Zone, we follow Owen as he pushes forward the boundaries of science, using a variety of sophisticated brain scans, auditory prompts, and even Alfred Hitchcock film clips to not only 'find' patients who are trapped inside their heads but to actually communicate with them and elicit answers to moving questions, such as 'Are you in pain?' and 'Do you want to go on living?' and 'Are you happy?' (Many gray zone patients do, in fact, claim to be satisfied with their quality of life.) Into the Gray Zone shines a fascinating light on how we think, remember, and pay attention. And it shows us how the field of brain-computer interfaces is about to explode, radically changing prognoses for people with impaired brain function and creating, for all of us, the tantalizing possibility of telepathy and augmented intelligence. Ultimately; this is not just a spellbinding story of scientific discovery but a deeply human, affirming book that causes us to wonder anew at the indomitable bonds of love."--Jacket.

Book Words for the Week

Download or read book Words for the Week written by Junebug and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many of us allow our treasured memories of ourselves, our children, and their children to slowly slip away and be forgotten, never having been recorded for future generations? “I decided to give my children and their children slices of our lives in book form, a family heirloom of memories in story form, with a photo or illustration with each story,” says Junebug, the author of this wonderful storybook. Words for the Week represents a compilation of one hundred stories, featuring experiences and relationships of the author’s family and friends, spanning the ages of three months to 73 years old. Each story centers on one word or phrase, which becomes the theme and title of the story, and encourages readers to think about similar events in their own lives. Says the author, “Characters in these stories range from myself and my children from a very young age to adulthood, and friends in various situations in life. The emotional content spans the gamut from hilarious to quite serious and sad. This is a verbal depiction of the actual lives of myself and my children, Denise, Danny, Debi, and Davy, all of whom are now grown and happy with the lives they have chosen and built for themselves.” Junebug began writing these stories while working for her local weekly newspaper. “The idea of a building a book of stories for my children about our lives was then born. After three years, one hundred stories were finally completed.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book of poetry titled IT'S TIME FOR A RHYME, gets right to the point. When I was a young lad still in high school the work of the classic poets captivated me. I was hooked. All of those poems, as I recall, flowed melodically, and part of the reason was because of their entrancing rhyming. In later years, I found myself becoming disturbed by poems that seemed so disjointed and seemed to roam all over the place. They didn't rhyme, and, to me at least, they were a bore. Thus, my title, IT'S TIME FOR A RHYME.

Book Robert Schumann

Download or read book Robert Schumann written by John Daverio and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-04-10 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forced by a hand injury to abandon a career as a pianist, Robert Schumann went on to become one of the world's great composers. Among many works, his Spring Symphony (1841), Piano Concerto in A Minor (1841/1845), and the Third, or Rhenish, Symphony (1850) exemplify his infusion of classical forms with intense, personal emotion. His musical influence continues today and has inspired many other famous composers in the century since his death. Indeed Brahms, in a letter of January 1873, wrote: "The remembrance of Schumann is sacred to me. I will always take this noble pure artist as my model." Now, in Robert Schumann: Herald of a "New Poetic Age," John Daverio presents the first comprehensive study of the composer's life and works to appear in nearly a century. Long regarded as a quintessentially romantic figure, Schumann also has been portrayed as a profoundly tragic one: a composer who began his career as a genius and ended it as a mere talent. Daverio takes issue with this Schumann myth, arguing instead that the composer's entire creative life was guided by the desire to imbue music with the intellectual substance of literature. A close analysis of the interdependence among Schumann's activities as reader, diarist, critic, and musician reveals the depth of his literary sensibility. Drawing on documents only recently brought to light, the author also provides a fresh outlook on the relationship between Schumann's mental illness--which brought on an extended sanitarium stay and eventual death in 1856--and his musical creativity. Schumann's character as man and artist thus emerges in all its complexity. The book concludes with an analysis of the late works and a postlude on Schumann's influence on successors from Brahms to Berg. This well-researched study of Schumann interprets the composer's creative legacy in the context of his life and times, combining nineteenth-century cultural and intellectual history with a fascinating analysis of the works themselves.
