Book excerpt: This new edition of the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera gives a taxonomic overview of the most diverse group of all organisms living in the world-largest biogeographical area. The present volume is an updated edition of the first issue in 2003 but restricted to data published before the year 2000. It contains information about 33,914 taxa (together with synonyms), and increases the number of included species and other taxa by almost 5,000. In addition, thousands of species have their distributional data completed, and their ranks, systematic positions and nomenclature corrected. Almost two hundred new acts fix systematics and nomenclature, and numerous problems are discussed. Even such well known genera as Calosoma and Carabus, or tribes as Bembidiini and Panagaeini, are completely reorganized compared to the previously published catalogues. Thus, the work is a scaffold for biotic surveys, ecological studies, and nature conservation. It responds to the urgent need of an assessment of the still remaining forms of life, threatened by the on-going destruction of habitats. Taxonomy provides the basic building blocks of our understanding of the diversity of life. It stems from innate human curiosity: confronted with an unknown species we ask first “what is it”? Taxonomists recognize species and other systematic entities (taxa), define them and place them within the framework of known organisms, providing means for their subsequent identification. During this time such activities have largely been viewed as beneficial or inconsequential. However, it has become increasingly clear that human-caused introductions of alien biota are an ecological disruption whose consequences rival those of better-known insults like chemical pollution, habitat loss, and climate change. Indeed, the irreversible nature of most alien-species int- ductions makes them less prone to correction than many other ecological problems. Current reshuffling of species ranges is so great that the present era has been referred to by some as the “Homogocene” in an effort to reflect the unique mag- tude of the changes being made. These alien interlopers often cause considerable ecological and economic d- age where introduced. Species extinctions, food-web disruptions, community alte- tions, ecosystem conversion, changes in nutrient cycling, fisheries collapse, watershed degradation, agricultural loss, building damage, and disease epidemics are among the destructive – and frequently unpredictable – ecological and economic effects that invasive alien species can inflict. The magnitude of these damages c- tinues to grow, with virtually all environments heavily used by humans now do- nated by alien species and many “natural” areas becoming increasingly prone to alien invasion as well. Attention to this problem has increased in the past decade or so, and efforts to prevent or limit further harm are gaining wider scientific and political acceptance.

Chrysomelids generally hatch from eggs, which are typically laid onto their food plants. Larvae eat, moult, and pupate on or very close to these plants. Following emergence as adults reproduction often proceeds without complex courting and, in most cases, without eating much or moving for longer distances. All of this is quite insect-like and seemingly pedestrian. Nevertheless, the mechanisms of host plant selection, the wide range of defensive devices, the multifariousness of shapes and the gaudiness of colours of their body ? to name just a few phenomena of their biology ? continuously fascinate quite a number of scientists, let aside many other beetle enthusiasts. Every four years, in connection with the International Congresses of Entomology, an informal group of leaf beetle workers meets for an International Symposium on the Chrysomelidae. Last time, we met on August 23, 2012, in Daegu, South Korea for the 24th International Congress of Entomology. Of the seven papers therein presented, four are, in extended and elaborated versions, published in the present volume. Three more papers on Chrysomelidae have been submitted independently and are included here as well. The present volume 4 of the series Research on Chrysomelidae is the second published as a special issue of ZooKeys. Publishing with Pensoft?s ZooKeys is not only fast and affordable, but also allows the inclusion of colour illustrations ad libitum, in both the printed and digital versions, so that the authors can easily share their excitement on their scientific objects with their readers. We, the editors, are glad to present this volume and hope that it will be valued not only for its scientific value but also attract the attention of non-chrysomelidologists to the fascinating world of leaf beetles. Hopefully, many such volumes will follow, so that our series will develop into an attractive forum for sharing news about a scientifically interesting, economically important, and emotionally rewarding group of insects.
