Book excerpt: The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) was the country's first creator of overseas Christian missions. Founded in 1810 and supported by a coalition of Calvinist denominations, the ABCFM established the first American missions in India, China, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and many other places. It was America's largest missionary organization in the nineteenth century, and its influence was immense. Its missionaries established the first Western schools and hospitals in many parts of the world, and they successfully promoted women's rights and other ideals from the Enlightenment. They also transformed oral languages such as Zulu, Hawaiian, and Cherokee into written form, and they preserved many elements of premodern cultures (albeit not always intentionally). The contributors to this book provide valuable insights on the work of the ABCFM (which exists today under a different name). Then, on October 9 of that year, Miss Mary Webb gathered together fourteen Baptist and Congregational women and organized the Boston Female Society for Missionary Purposes. It would consist of . . . females who are disposed to contribute their mite towards so noble a design as diffusion of gospel light among the shades of darkness and superstition"; dues were set at $2.00 annually. So began a movement which was to spread throughout Massachusetts and, eventually, the entire country. Initially, however, progress was slow. Male prejudice opposed even the practice of women meeting together for prayer and contributing funds to mission work. And even after the role of women as fund-raisers was generally accepted there remained the reluctance of church mission boards to give to women a share in policy and decision making. Eventually the women organized their own missionary sending societies; these groups were largely responsible for sending single women into the mission fields - another practice which had long been opposed by denominational boards. R. Pierce Beaver traces the development of this fascinating movement, paying attention not only to its broad outlines, but also to the individual pioneers who led the way.

In the second century, St. Ignatius was the first to describe the eucharist as the medicine of immortality. Prudentius, a 4th-century poet and Christian apologist, celebrated the healing power of St. Cyprian's tongue. Bokenham, in his 15th-century Legendary, reported the healing power of milk from St. Agatha's breasts. Zulu prophets in 19th-century Natal petitioned Jesus to cure diseases caused by restless spirits. And Mary Baker Eddy invoked the Science of Divine Mind as a weapon against malicious animal magnetism. In this book Amanda Porterfield demonstrates that healing has played a major role in the historical development of Christianity as a world religion. Porterfield traces the origin of Christian healing and maps its transformations in the ancient, medieval, and modern worlds. She shows that Christian healing had its genesis in Judean beliefs that sickness and suffering were linked to sin and evil, and that health and healing stemmed from repentance and divine forgiveness. Examining Jesus' activities as a healer and exorcist, she shows how his followers carried his combat against sin and evil and his compassion for suffering into new and very different cultural environments, from the ancient Mediterranean to modern America and beyond. She explores the interplay between Christian healing and medical practice from ancient times up to the present, looks at recent discoveries about religion's biological effects, and considers what these findings mean in light of ages-old traditions about belief and healing. Changing Christian ideas of healing, Porterfield shows, are a window into broader changes in religious authority, church structure, and ideas about sanctity, history, resurrection, and the kingdom of God.
