Download or read book Copper for America written by Charles K. Hyde and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1998-10 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive history of copper mining tells the full story of the industry that produces one of America's most important metals. The first inclusive account of U.S. copper in one volume, Copper for America relates the discovery and development of America's major copper-producing areasÑthe eastern United States, Tennessee, Michigan, Montana, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and AlaskaÑfrom colonial times to the present. Starting with the predominance of New England and the Middle Atlantic states in the early nineteenth century, Copper for America traces the industry's migration to Michigan in mid-century and to Montana, Arizona, and other western states in the late nineteenth century. The book also examines the U.S. copper industry's decline in the twentieth century, studying the effects of strong competition from foreign copper industries and unforeseen changes in the national and global copper markets. An extensively documented chronicle of the rise and fall of individual mines, companies, and regions, Copper for America will prove an essential resource for economic and business historians, historians of technology and mining, and western historians.

Download or read book The History of Foreign Investment in the United States to 1914 written by Mira Wilkins and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 1092 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the colonial era to 1914, America was a debtor nation in international accounts--owing more to foreigners than foreigners owed to us. By 1914 it was the world's largest debtor nation. Mira Wilkins provides the first complete history of foreign investment in the United States during that period. The book shows why the United States was attractive to foreign investors and traces the changing role of foreign capital in the nation's development, covering both portfolio and direct investment. The immense new wave of foreign investment in the United States today, and our return to the status of a debtor nation--once again the world's largest debtor nation--makes this strong exposition far more than just historically interesting. Wilkins reviews foreign portfolio investments in government securities (federal, state, and local) and in corporate stocks and bonds, as well as foreign direct investments in land and real estate, manufacturing plants, and even such service-sector activities as accounting, insurance, banking, and mortgage lending. She finds that between 1776 and 1875, public-sector securities (principally federal and state securities) drew in the most long-term foreign investment, whereas from 1875 to 1914 the private sector was the main attraction. The construction of the American railroad system called on vast portfolio investments from abroad; there was also sizable direct investment in mining, cattle ranching, the oil industry, the chemical industry, flour production, and breweries, as well as the production of rayon, thread, and even submarines. In addition, there were foreign stakes in making automobile and electrical and nonelectrical machinery. America became the leading industrial country of the world at the very time when it was a debtor nation in world accounts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logic and Joy are back and things have gotten complicated. Logic is in a faceoff with Rah that tests the loyalty of his entire family. Nova is playing with fire because she can't seem to understand that Rah is bad news. That one mistake could cost her tremendously. She needs to decide if Rah is worth the division that could potentially occur within her family. Logic is falling back into his role as a leader, and his team is grateful. They're regaining the respect that they lost due to Donte, and money is flowing. The only issue they have is Rah's team coming for them. Logic refuses to allow them to fall and he's on a mission to take Rah down, not only because he's coming for his team, but also because he's got his eyes set on Joy. Gotti has stepped right into the role of Logic's right hand, and he's willing to do anything and everything to make sure they stay ahead of things. He will go to war with Logic, no questions asked, but will their relationship be challenged when he lays eyes on Najah? Loyalty or love is the question on the table when it comes to the two of them, and street code comes into play. The line has been drawn and sides have to be chosen to see where loyalties lie.
Download or read book The London Stock Exchange written by Ranald Michie and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-04-26 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, the London Stock Exchange will be 200 years old, though its origins go back a century before that. This book traces the history of the London Stock Exchange from its beginnings around 1700 to the present day, chronicling the challenges and opportunities it has faced, avoided, or exploited over the years. Throughout, the history seeks to blend an understanding of the London Stock Exchange as an institution with that of the securities market of which it was - and is - such an important component. One cannot be examined satisfactorily without the other. Without a knowledge of both, for example, the causes of the 'Big Bang' of 1986 would forever remain a mystery. However, the history of the London Stock Exchange is not just worthy of study for what it reveals about the interaction between institution and market. Such was the importance of the London Stock Exchange that its rise to world dominance before 1914, its decline thereafter, and its renaissance from the mid-1980s, explain a great deal about Britain's own economic performance and the working of the international economy. For the first time a British economic institution of foremost importance is studied throughout its entire history, with regard to the roles played and the constraints under which it operated, and the results evaluated against the background of world economic progress.
