Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 17 Perhaps the most eminent and interesting man associated with me during this period was Mr. George W. Hill, who will easily rank as the greatest master of mathematical astronomy during the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The part assigned to Hill was about the most difficult in the whole work - the theory of Jupiter and Saturn Owing to the great mass of these giant planets, the inequalities of their motion, especially in the case of Saturn, affected by the attraction of Jupiter, are greater than in the case of the other planets. Leverrier failed to attain the necessary exactness in his investigation of their motion. Hill had done some work on the subject at his home in Nyack Turnpike before I took charge of the office. He now moved to Washington, and seriously began the complicated numerical calculations which his task involved. I urged that he should accept the assistance of less skilled computers; but he declined it from a desire to do the entire work himself. Computers to make the duplicate computations necessary to guard against accidental numerical errors on his part were all that be required. He labored almost incessantly for about 10 years, when be handed in the manu script of what now forms Volume IV 6 of the Astronomical Papers. And here was perhaps the greatest living master in the highest and most difficult field of astronomy, winning world-wide recognition for his country in the science, and receiving the salary of a department clerk. I never wrestled harder with a superior than I did with Hon. R. W. Thompson, Secretary of the Navy, about 1880, to induce him to raise Mr. Hill's salary from to It goes without saying that Hill took even less interest in the matter than I did. He did not work for pay, but for the love of science. That I could not secure for him at least the highest official consideration is among the regret ful memories of my official life. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the National Academy of Science, 1927, Vol. 19 From the various considerations already adduced it Will be quite clear that no general philosophy of petrogenesis should be based upon a study of a portion of the 1gneous recks alone, however complete-it might be' in regard to geological, petrographical, and physico-che'mical circumstances; and therefore, since no study of the intermediate and acid types of normal and alkaline 1gneous rocks has been made by the writer comparable in detail with those upon basic igneous rocks here given, it must be recognized that the generalizations which follow are derived perhaps too exclusively from the' study of basic rocks. If, however, they are found to be an adequate statement of the modes of occurrence of such rocks, they may then be combined with the results of s1m11ar studies upon the other types of rocks into a general petrogenetic theory. While no invariable rules for mode of occurrence of basic intrusive rocks seem yet dis coverable, there emerge from the studies which follow the conception of several modes of occur 'rence, so frequently represented that they' seem to result from fundamental principles of petrogenesis, while the exceptions to these are especially worthy of study, .s1nce in all probability they will throw most light upon the nature of the controlling conditions and the relationships to one another of apparently distinct modes of occurrence. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 9 The species of this group are all more or less protectively colored. Their grayish, brownish hues, with yellowish or sometimes greenish markings, harmonize with the tints of the bark of the trunk or branches of trees, whether grown over with lichens or not. In their shape and size, whether at rest or flying, they closely resemble the species of Noctuidae. They differ as a rule, however, in their slower flight, and in resting on the bark or among the leaves of trees, not nestling in grass or low heritage. There are almost no observations yet made on the protective attitudes of notodontian moths, and the subject needs to be carefully studied. Long and close observations in the field with the aid of the camera are needed before we shall have a satisfactory body of facts, and it is to be hoped that this line of study will be taken up by lepidopterists of future generations. Many observations have doubtless been made by breeders of moths, but not published. What we have to say is mainly in the line of suggestion. The colors and attitudes of the more typical members of the family, as the species of Notodonta, Pheosia, Lophodonta, etc., when at rest, with their tufts and the consequent production of angles and points, assimilate them with the bark of trees or twigs wich salient parts, buds, and other projecting points. Those who have seen species of geometrids, Ingura, etc., at rest, with their tails curled up and their wings partly spread out, will readily understand how the species of Apatelodes, Melanopha, etc., with their tufted abdominal tips, angulated wings, and bars and spots, would tend to conceal them from the prying eyes of birds. The species of Melalopha (M. inclusa and strigosa) sit with the wings folded sharply over the back, with the fore legs held straight out in front, and the tufted tail upcurved. (Monogr. Bombycine Moths, 1, p. 181.) The pale yellowish hues of Datana and Nadata, the latter with its high dorsal thoracic tuft, assimilate them with yellow and brown leaves. Here reference might be made to Professor Poulton's statement that the shape and color of Scoliopteryx lihatrix "forcibly suggest the appearance of a red leaf spotted with a few white bosses of fungoid growth." (Trans. Ent. Soc. London. 1887, p. 308.) Hyparpax aurora may be found, like Rhodophora florida, to frequent pink and yellow flowers. How the very unusual and conspicuous markings of Edema albifrous and of Nerice bidentata may mimic the dentate edges of leaves or projections of other objects will doubtless be eventually cleared up. The ground shades and tints of the species of Schizura and Heteroeampa, with their green and yellowish spots and streaks would, when the moths are resting on lichen-covered bark of their food trees, amply protect them from the observation of birds. This has been pointed out by Riley in the case of Schizura unicornis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 13 It seems obvious that such practices would in time produce great confusion and that the chances of lessening such a confusion would decrease as time passed. The history and geography of a fall must be the important factors in determining its right to be regarded individual. Of these two factors the history must be determined from all available literature, while the geography can readily be shown by mapping. To undertake this task for the meteorites of a single large geographic province such as North America seemed to the writer desirable, not only for the intrinsic value of the record, but to throw light on the question of the extent to which individual falls may be naturally or artificially distributed. Funds for assistance having been generously provided through a grant from the J. Lawrence Smith Fund of the National Academy of Sciences, such a catalogue was undertaken and is here presented. Prof. W. C. Macnaul, of Chicago, rendered valuable assistance in the bibliographic work and translating. In the preparation of the text of this catalogue the endeavor of the writer has been to collect all published facts of importance regarding the different falls. Several methods of grouping these facts were considered, but it was finally concluded that an essentially chrono logical treatment would be the most satisfactory. Such a grouping shows in historical order the growth of knowledge regarding each fall and enables one to appreciate the difficulties of the earlier investigators and the manner in which features overlooked or not understood by them were later made clear. For example, Cambria was early described as showing nodules composed of two kinds of iron sulphide, one decomposable and regarded as troilite, the other unattacked by acids and regarded as pyrrhotite. It remained for later investigation to show that the pude composable constituent was schreibersite. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
