Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Vol. 1: Being a Republication The Historical Society of Pennsylvania commences the publication of its transactions with the present number, and with the expectation of being able to issue a work of equal size every six months. From the miscellaneous nature of the subjects, it is obvious that an adherence to chronological order would not be easy. The Society does not undertake to compose a history; its desire is to collect materials for history. Remote and recent periods will, therefore, sometimes be found in immediate contact or anachronous succession: the transactious of the seventeenth century may follow those of the nineteenth. But, although historical order is impossible, the want of it, it is hoped, will not impair the interest which such collections usually excite; and the variety of the facts may compensate for the irregularity of the arrangement. Book Sources and Analogues of the Canterbury Tales

Download or read book Sources and Analogues of the Canterbury Tales written by Robert M. Correale and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 2002 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of this volume completes the new edition of the sources and major analogues of all the Canterbury Tales prepared by members of the New Chaucer Society. This collection, the first to appear in over half a century, features such additions as a fresh interpretation of Chaucer's sources for the frame of the work, chapters on the sources of the General Prologue and Retractions, and modern English translations of all foreign language texts, with glosses for the Middle English. Chapters on the individual tales contain an updated survey of the present state of scholarship on their source materials. Several sources and analogues discovered during the past fifty years are found here together for the first time, and some other familiar sources are re-edited from manuscripts closer to Chaucer's copies. Besides the General Prologue and the Retractions, this volume includes chapters on the Miller, Summoner, Merchant, Physician, Shipman, Prioress, Sir Thopas, Canon's Yeoman, Manciple, the Knight and the prologues and tales of the Man of Law and Wife of Bath.Contributors: PETER BEIDLER, KENNETH A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosive truth about America’s Revolution–a bloody civil war that was won largely in the South–that modern liberals have kept buried until now. At the darkest hour of the American Revolution, in 1780, when there was little reason to hope, the British went down South and overplayed their hand. By burning the bibles of backwoodsmen and threatening their honor, the British ignited a firestorm in the most spectacular, unusual, and decisive battle of the war. Ordinary folk from throughout the Southern colonies spontaneously banded together and rode for hundreds of miles to attack and destroy British forces at King’s Mountain. The killing didn’t stop at King’s Mountain, but the war did. Never heard of the massacre that saved the American Revolution? No idea that liberty was actually won in the South? Red state values of God, guns and guts are being dismantled by leftists airbrushing our past in order to “transform” our future. Grand Theft History features shocking new evidence that exposes the latest battlefield in the culture wars–American history.
