I found that there was no book which could give me the information I wanted, but I discovered that vast materials existed in the boundless waste of the King's Pamphlets at the British Museum, in the State Papers at the Record Office, and in private collections; and that so far as Wales was concerned it was an untrodden field. After some hesitation I resolved to attempt to contribute something towards a history of the Principality during that period. The leisure hours of some years have been devoted to the subject, and the result is now offered to the public, in the belief that it will fill a gap in the History of Wales and the Marches, and that it will not be without some interest to my countrymen.
