Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte An historian will one day arise, who will do justice to his merit as for myself, I do not even pretend to aspire to the honour of being his biographer; I am only about to relate all that I know of this extraordinary man, and which I believe I know well - that which I have seen and heard, and of which I have preserved numerous notes. With confidence I call him an extraordinary man - who, owing everything to himself, acquired the most absolute sway over a great and enlightened nation, obtained so many victories, subdued so many states, distributed crowns to his family, made and unmade kings, and who became nearly the most ancient sovereign in Europe, and who was, without doubt, the most distinguished of his age; such an individual cannot be called an ordinary man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte, Vol. 1 A celebrated soothsayer was recommended to Bonaparte by the inhabitants of Cairo, who confidentially vouched for the ac curacy with which he could fortel future events. He was sent for, and when he arrived, I, Venture, and a sheik, were with the general. The prophet wished first to exercise his skill upon Bonaparte; who, however, proposed that I should have my for tune told first, to which I acceded without hesitation. To afford an idea of his prophetic skill, I must mention, that since my arrival in Cairo, I had been in a very weak state. The passage of the Nile, and the bad food we had had for twelve days, had greatly reduced me, so that I was miserably pale and thin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte, Vol. 3 of 4 The tribune Ouree had the honour of first propo sing otficially the conversion of the Consular Repub lic into an Empire, and the elevation of Bonaparte to the title of Emperor, with hereditary right. Curée developed his proposition in the meeting of the 30th April, at whio I was resent. He commenced, by exposing the miseries w ioh had overwhelmed France, from the Constitutional Assembly, down to the 18th Brumaire a revolution which bej ustly characterized as a deliverance. He then assed in review the brilliant career of the present ead of the Republic; enumerated his claims to the gratitude of France; shewed that her flourishing condition depended on him Let us haste, then, to demand the hereditary transmission of the supreme magistracy; for, in voting for an hereditary chief, as Pliny said to Trajan, we bar the return of a master. But, at the same time, let us give a great name to a great power; let us choose a title which, while it carries the idea of the highest civil functions, may recall glorious remem brances, and breathe no taint upon the sovereignty of the people. I can see, for the guardian of a national ppwer, none more befitting than the title of Emperor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte, Vol. 4 of 4 Even now I am filled with astonishment, when I think Of the council that was held at the Tuileries on the 13th Of March. The ignorance of the members of that council respecting our situation, and their confidence in the useless measures they had adopted against Napoleon, exceed all conception. Will it be believed, that those great statesmen, who had the control Of the telegraph, the post-office, the police and its agents, money, in short, every thing which constitutes power, asked me to give them information respecting the advance of Bonaparte? What could I say to them? I could only repeat the reports which were circulated on the Exchange, and those which I had collected here and there, during the last twenty - four hours. I did not conceal that the danger was imminent, and that all their precau tions would be Of no avail. The question'then arose as to what course should be adopted by the king. It was impossible that the monarch could remain in the capital, and yet, where was he to go? One proposed that he should go to Bordeaux; another to La Vendee; and a third to Normandy; and a fourth member of the council was Of opinion that the king should be conducted' to Melun. I conceived that if a battle should take place any where, it would probably be in the neighbourhood Of that town; but the counsellor who madethis last suggestion, assured us that the presence Of the king, in an open carriage and eight horses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Court of the First Empire, Vol. 2 Assistance, and I asked the Emperor to give me a companion. The idea then came to him to create two posts of Secretary to the Cabinet, and he appointed General Clarke - who, now that the death of the King of Etruria had closed his mission to this prince, was without employment - to one of these places. The Emperor appearing to neglect him, Clarke followed him step by step during his journey in Alsatia, placing himself before him each time that he had the Oppor tunity of recalling himself to his memory. On his return from this short journey, the Emperor told me that, not wishing to interrupt the unity of the work of his private work-room, he had made up his mind to charge the general with the title of Secretary to the Cabinet, with a Special class of work, viz., his corre spondence with the Ministers of War and Marine; and that this would be a notable reduction of my day's work. General Clarke was accordingly estab lished in a private office. But the necessity of sending for him to write to his ministers often kept the Em peror back from making use of his services; in one word, the post degenerated into a sinecure. The sec ond post of Secretary to the Cabinet was also vacant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
