Book Memoir Ethics

  • Author : Mike W. Martin
  • Publisher : Lexington Books
  • Release : 2016-02-10
  • ISBN : 1498533663
  • Pages : 186 pages

Download or read book Memoir Ethics written by Mike W. Martin and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-02-10 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoir Ethics: Good Lives and the Virtues is a philosophical study of moral themes in memoirs, exploring how memoirists present and defend perspectives on good lives. It pays particular attention to the interplay of the virtues, including their interplay with additional (non-moral) types of values in good lives. More generally, it explores the relevance of memoir to moral philosophy, and in turn how moral philosophy enters into elucidating and critiquing memoirs. Memoirs are understood as non-fiction narratives written by oneself and significantly about oneself (including full-life autobiographies). Mike W. Martin explores perspectives on good lives as they are expressed in memoirs written by both philosophers and non-philosophers. Most of the chapters focus on one of the generic aspects of good lives: moral goodness, authenticity, meaningfulness, happiness, health, and self-fulfillment. The book clarifies how memoirists often employ life-based arguments in defending value perspectives, and it includes a discussion of whether philosophers’ memoirs are distinctive, compared to memoirs by non-philosophers and also compared to other forums for doing philosophy. Martin highlights some parallels between features of good lives and features of memoirs; for example, both can be said to be meaningful, authentic, and having virtues such as wisdom and courage. Demonstrating how memoirs are rich resources in exploring the good lives and exploring ways in which philosophical ethics provide tools for interpreting memoirs, Memoir Ethics will be of interest to a broad audience of students, scholars, and general readers, including anyone interested in ethics or the connections between literature and philosophy.

Book Memoir

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ben Yagoda
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2009-11-12
  • ISBN : 1101151471
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Memoir written by Ben Yagoda and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-11-12 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a critically acclaimed cultural and literary critic, a definitive history and analysis of the memoir. From Saint Augustine?s Confessions to Augusten Burroughs?s Running with Scissors, from Julius Caesar to Ulysses Grant, from Mark Twain to David Sedaris, the art of memoir has had a fascinating life, and deserves its own biography. Cultural and literary critic Ben Yagoda traces the memoir from its birth in early Christian writings and Roman generals? journals all the way up to the banner year of 2007, which saw memoirs from and about dogs, rock stars, bad dads, good dads, alternadads, waitresses, George Foreman, Iranian women, and a slew of other illustrious persons (and animals). In a time when memoir seems ubiquitous and is still highly controversial, Yagoda tackles the autobiography and memoir in all its forms and iterations. He discusses the fraudulent memoir and provides many examples from the past?and addresses the ramifications and consequences of these books. Spanning decades and nations, styles and subjects, he analyzes the hallmark memoirs of the Western tradition?Rousseau, Ben Franklin, Henry Adams, Gertrude Stein, Edward Gibbon, among others. Yagoda also describes historical trends, such as Native American captive memoirs, slave narratives, courtier dramas (where one had to pay to NOT be included in a courtesan?s memoir). Throughout, the idea of memory and truth, how we remember and how well we remember lives, is intimately explored. Yagoda's elegant examination of memoir is at once a history of literature and taste, and an absorbing glimpse into what humans find interesting--one another.

Book The Religious Life

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donald Capps
  • Publisher : Lutterworth Press
  • Release : 2016-09-29
  • ISBN : 0718844548
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book The Religious Life written by Donald Capps and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William James called his classic work, The Varieties of Religious Experience, 'a study in human nature'. For James, it is a fundamental feature of human nature that we have a conscious and a subconscious mind, and that the subconscious mind is deeply implicated in the religious life, especially in conversion and other experiences of spiritual enlightenment. In The Religious Life, Donald Capps addresses religious melancholy, the div ided self and discordant personality, religious conversion, thesaintly character, and the prayerful consciousness. He contrasts the cases of two clergymen - one deeply troubled, the other exemplary of the spiritual person. Aimed at general readers, Capps' work makes William James, a popular author in his own day, accessible to a modern audience.
