Book The Memoirs of Ismail Kemal Bey Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Memoirs of Ismail Kemal Bey In prefixing to the "Memoirs" of Ismail Kemal Bey, in guise of "Introduction," a few unnecessary, but, let me hope, not absolutely futile, comments, I am merely keeping a promise solemnly made during the months we passed together in Paris in 1917 and 1918. It was, no doubt, natural enough for Ismail Kemal Bey to suggest some such association. Certainly his book would not have been written but for my urgent insistence. Moreover, too directly and absorbingly involved in matters connected with the progress of the war to offer my friend the constant collaboration which he solicited - and which, in fact, he needed - I was able to provide him with the indispensable assistance which the occasion demanded. These "Memoirs," indeed, are "edited" by Mr. Sommerville Story; and it is a duty both to Ismail Kemal Bey and to Mr. Story to leave no doubt as to what the "editing" in question means. The making of this book was a laborious process. During its production Ismail Kemal Bey was distracted both by grave personal, often harrowing, problems, and by patriotic preoccupations and intrigues as to the future of his Albanian fatherland. He did not, no doubt he could not, give to its composition his undivided time. His shifting enthusiasms and curiosities, his spasmodic disappearances, even his halting methods when he returned intermittently to the task of assembling his recollections, made an accumulation of extremely unfavourable conditions for the success of the operation in which Mr. Story found himself engaged. Book The Young Turks in Opposition

Download or read book The Young Turks in Opposition written by M. Sukru Hanioglu and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-03-16 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1908, the revolution of the Young Turks deposed the dictatorship of Sultan Abdulhamid II and established a constitutional regime that became the major ruling power in the Ottoman empire. But the seeds of this revolution went back much farther: to 1889, when the secret Young Turk organization the Committee of Union and Progress was formed. M. Sukru Hanioglu's landmark work is the story of the power struggles within the CUP and its impact on twentieth-century Turkish politics and culture. At once an in-depth history of an ideological movement and a study of the diplomatic relationships between the Ottoman Empire and the so-called great powers of Europe at the turn of the century, it analyzes the influence of European political thought on the CUP conspirators, and traces their influence on generations of Turkish intellectual and political life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will completely transform the standard interpretation of the Young Turk Revolution of 1908, a watershed event in the late Ottoman Empire and a key to the emergence of the modern nation-states in the Middle East and Balkans. Preparation for a Revolution is the first book on the Young Turk Revolution to draw on both the extensive memoirs and papers of the Young Turks and on the extensive diplomatic archives around the world. The author has plumbed not only the Ottoman Archives but collected documents from archives in Bonn, Berlin, Jerusalem, London, Paris, Rome, Athens, Sofia, Tirana, Bern, Geneva, Sarajevo, Cairo, Stockholm, and Tokyo. Breaking new ground, Hanioglu describes in detail how practical considerations led the Young Turks to sacrifice or alter many of their goals for social transformation. He tells a story rich in character and plot, and reveals the many factions and competing intellectual trends that marked this tumultuous period at the end of the Ottoman Empire. Preparation for a Revolution will prove indispensable to anyone working on the political, intellectual, and social history of the Ottoman Empire and of the states that were established on its ruins.

Book Crises in Authoritarian Regimes

Download or read book Crises in Authoritarian Regimes written by Jörg Baberowski and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Revolution of 1908 in Turkey

Download or read book The Revolution of 1908 in Turkey written by Aykut Kansu and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a detailed account and an excellent narrative history of the often neglected period 1906-1908 in Turkey, in which the prelude and aftermath of the revolution and elections of 1908 took place. The year 1908 opened a new era of representative government and the social and political developments leading to the overthrow of the ancien régime are carefully and fascinatingly given. Historians and general readers will find The Revolution of 1908 in Turkey a thought-provoking book, which will resound in the discussion of the validity of Kemalist or quasi-Kemalist historiography and therefore provide a major contribution to the field.

Book Arabs and Young Turks

  • Author : Hasan Kayali
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press

  • ISBN : 052091757X

Download or read book Arabs and Young Turks written by Hasan Kayali and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arabs and Young Turks provides a detailed study of Arab politics in the late Ottoman Empire as viewed from the imperial capital in Istanbul. In an analytical narrative of the Young Turk period (1908-1918) historian Hasan Kayali discusses Arab concerns on the one hand and the policies of the Ottoman government toward the Arabs on the other. Kayali's novel use of documents from the Ottoman archives, as well as Arabic sources and Western and Central European documents, enables him to reassess conventional wisdom on this complex subject and to present an original appraisal of proto-nationalist ideologies as the longest-living Middle Eastern dynasty headed for collapse. He demonstrates the persistence and resilience of the supranational ideology of Islamism which overshadowed Arab and Turkish ethnic nationalism in this crucial transition period. Kayali's study reaches back to the nineteenth century and highlights both continuity and change in Arab-Turkish relations from the reign of Abdulhamid II to the constitutional period ushered in by the revolution of 1908. Arabs and Young Turks is essential for an understanding of contemporary issues such as Islamist politics and the continuing crises of nationalism in the Middle East.

Book Non Sunni Muslims in the Late Ottoman Empire

Download or read book Non Sunni Muslims in the Late Ottoman Empire written by Necati Alkan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alawis or Alawites are a minority Muslim sect, predominantly based in Syria, Turkey and Lebanon. Over the course of the 19th century, they came increasingly under the attention of the ruling Ottoman authorities in their attempts to modernize the Empire, as well as Western Protestant missionaries. Using Ottoman state archives and contemporary chronicles, this book explores the Ottoman government's attitudes and policies towards the Alawis, revealing how successive regimes sought to bring them into the Sunni mainstream fold for a combination of political, imperial and religious reasons. In the context of increasing Western interference in the empire's domains, Alkan reveals the origins of Ottoman attempts to 'civilize' the Alawis, from the Tanzimat period to the Young Turk Revolution. He compares Ottoman attitudes to Alawis against its treatment of other minorities, including Bektashis, Alevis, Yezidis and Iraqi Shi'a. An important new contribution to the literature on the history of the Alawis and Ottoman policy towards minorities, this book will be essential reading for scholars of the late Ottoman Empire and minorities of the Middle East.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1914 the eccentric adventurer Captain Duncan Heaton-Armstrong, "on the look out for a more stable career", applied for the post of Private Secretary to the newly appointed King of Albania - the German Prince William of Wied. Heaton-Armstrong describes, with vibrancy, directness and humour, a miniature royal court in a desperately poor and remote corner of Europe. As the First World War engulfed the Balkans in August 1914, two royal infants were escorted back to Germany by Heaton-Armstrong, who was promptly made the first prisoner of war. His remarkable account has been edited for this, the first general edition.
