At length, Hernand Teillo being slain by a musket shot, the besieged capitulated, and the King established as governor in the city the Seigneur de Vic, a man of great order and exact discipline, who by the royal command began to build a citadel there. At his departure from Amiens, the King led his army to the very gates of Arras to visit the Archduke; he remained three days in...

Book The History of Henry IV

Download or read book The History of Henry IV written by 0. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Henry IV: Surnamed "the Great", King of France and Navarre, Translated From the French This History of Henry IV. of France forms the seventh issue of my Historic Memoir Series. The character of this King is one that recommends itself to the sympathy of the English people, inasmuch as he was so closely allied with, and received considerable assistance from, Queen Elizabeth of England. Henry IV. bore arms from the age of fifteen to forty-five, taking part in more than a hundred combats. This history was written by Hardouin de Beaumont de Péréfixe, successively Bishop of Rhodez and Archbishop of Paris. It was written for the edification of Louis XIV., grandson of Henry IV., and was translated for another grandson, Charles II. of England, by James Dauncey. The first French edition was published at Amsterdam in 1661. The English edition, published at London, appeared in 1663. Numerous French editions have been published, the latest and best being that issued at Paris in 1876. There is no trace of any other English issue than one published at Paris in 1785, and that is not absolutely correct.
