Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of Anna Maria Wilhelmina Pickering My grandfather's paternal uncle, Lawyer Stanhope, settled at Horsforth. He was a man of very remarkable ability, but he preferred the country and his hunting, to glory, and more than once refused a Judgeship, because he did not wish to live in London. Nor, perhaps, would he have gained much by accepting such promotion; for, as it was, he was well known from one end of the county to the other, and swept the West Riding of briefs. The county men all preferred taking their business to t'ould lawyer, rather than intrusting anyone else with it: all family dis putes were referred to him, and people deposited their money with him in preference to putting it into the bank. I was struck by coming across his name in some book I was reading lately, where he was mentioned as being one of the cleverest and most distinguished lawyers of his day. There is a portrait of him at Cannon Hall, in his full bottomed wig and robes, representing a fine and intellectual face. He died long before I was born. My grandfather brought with him once from Ireland a clerk called Hardy, who settled at Horsforth, and was followed by so many of his relations that the place became quite peopled with Hardys. Hardy's son, who became my grandfather's steward, used often to be asked to come into the drawing-room at Cannon Hall, but he would never do so; he kept entirely to the steward's room, and would never even sit down in my grandmother's presence. Book Forbidden Wife

Download or read book Forbidden Wife written by Julia Abel Smith and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the night of 4 April 1793, two lovers were preparing to compel a cleric to perform a secret ceremony. The wedding of the sixth son of King George III to the daughter of the Earl of Dunmore would not only be concealed – it would also be illegal. Lady Augusta Murray had known Prince Augustus Frederick for only three months but they had already fallen deeply in love and were desperate to be married. However, the Royal Marriages Act forbade such a union without the King's permission and going ahead with the ceremony would change Augusta's life forever. From a beautiful socialite she became a social pariah; her children were declared illegitimate and her family was scorned. In Forbidden Wife Julia Abel Smith uses material from the Royal Archives and the Dunmore family papers to create a dramatic biography set in the reigns of Kings George III and IV against the background of the American and French Revolutions.
