Before he was born he had lived for thousands of years; infinite successions of reveries had amassed them selves in the depths of his heart. No man has been as much as he the incarnation of a whole race: generations of ancestors, lost in the sleep of centuries, speechless, came through him to life and utterance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Sportsman Some time ago I was induced at the request of a friend who had charge of a Sporting Review to write some articles for his paper. These were continued longer than I had originally contemplated, and I give them with some additions in this volume. From youth I have been very fond of out-door life, and sports of all kinds, and although for many years engaged extensively in business affairs, I have never failed in giving way for these pursuits. Often such indulgence was seemingly to my disadvantage, but after half a century of gratification in this respect, I am well satisfied in believing I have no occasion for regret, for one cannot be deprived of enjoyments once possessed. I may add, that in pursuit of adventure, I have gained some important pecuniary advantages from Opportunities offering. Book The Life of a Sportsman Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of a Sportsman Classic Reprint written by Nimrod Nimrod and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of a Sportsman MY design and object in writing this work was not merely to depict the life of a sportsman, in the general - perhaps, with some persons, unfavourable - acceptation of that term, but, taking higher ground, to portray the character of an English gentleman attached to the sports and pastimes of his country; and, likewise, to give a sketch of a country gentleman's family, in as close imitation as pos sible of those of the best description, with which it has been my good fortune to become acquainted. In fact, in many instances, the imitation, or resemblance, is so close, as not to be doubtful to many as to who are the original parties; and they themselves cannot be displeased with my selection, when they are intended to be displayed as examplars worthy of being followed by others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How I Became a Sportsman: Being Early Reminiscences of a Veteran Sportsman IN venturing to place before the public this little work, the author does not for one moment attempt to claim for it anything more than an endeavour to give a hint to the embryo, or perhaps to amuse the more mature or declining, sportsman. As the title expresses, these reminis cences are the author's early experiences only, and must not therefore be expected to throw very much daylight on the subjects treated of. Nor must the reader expect any learned advice or dissertations on sport in general; still at times a point or two will crop up which the author considers to be crucial ones in making a good, bad, or indifferent sportsman, particularly in What relates to the gun. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of a Sportsman The thought that inspired this composition is worthy of praise. The Reez't: d'un C/zasseur are destined chie y to de pict to us the interesting population which, to the shame of our century, is in Russia still groaning under the odious yoke of serfdom. Little country lordlings indeed figure in the stories; but they are placed in the background, and all interest is centred on the men who live under them. Every one will doubtless applaud the courage of the writer, who, under the suspicious regime then in all its vigor in Russia, did not fear to consecrate his pen to such an enter prise. Before him no one had dared to attempt it; the world in the midst of which he introduces us was a region unknown to Russian literature. Book My Life as Soldier and Sportsman Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Life as Soldier and Sportsman Classic Reprint written by J. Robson Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life as Soldier and Sportsman When a mere layman writes a book it is customary for him to inscribe a preface or, as Izaak Walton would say, an epistle to the readers. My original idea was to write and have printed a few personal reminiscences of the days and weeks I have spent in various sports, for the young folks who may come after me; in fact, I contemplated writing a sort of boys' book. How ever, it came to pass that I met, and discussed the subject with, Mr Arthur F. Meyrick who, like myself, is getting on in years. He is a most enthusiastic student of racing and other sports, and in addition to suggesting that I should write a larger volume, on more general subjects, he volunteered to contribute to my book by supplying details of the Grand National from Lottery to Troytown. Gradually, as the copy grew, so did the number of new ideas. Thus it came about that causeries on other sports suggested themselves to me. When a young man, Mr Meyrick followed in the footsteps of his father in the journalistic world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Forty Years of a Sportsman s Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forty Years of a Sportsman s Life Classic Reprint written by Claude Champion De Crespigny and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty Years of a Sportsman's Life Some fourteen years ago I published a volume of memoirs, in the compiling of which I had the kind assistance of the Duke of Beaufort and Mr. G. A. B. Dewar. It having been suggested to me that I have run through a good many experiences since then, I have been tempted to venture into print once more, and the result is the present volume. A portion of the former book, which deals with my earlier experiences, has naturally been retained, but, with the assistance of Mr. Harold Simpson, it has been thoroughly revised and brought up to date, and I have added another fourteen years of sport and adventure by land, sea, and air. If any apology is needed, I ofier it here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Records of the Chase and Memoirs of Celebrated Sportsmen

Download or read book Records of the Chase and Memoirs of Celebrated Sportsmen written by Cecil Cecil and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Chase and Memoirs of Celebrated Sportsmen: Illustrating Some of the Usages of Olden Times and Comparing Them With Prevailing Customs The first edition of this book, a small thick octavo, appeared in 1854; and in 1877 a second edition, also in small octavo, thoroughly revised, was put forth. The preface to the second edition reads as follows: - "Since the publication of the first edition numerous changes in hunting countries have taken place; some have been divided and new ones constituted. Many masters of hounds have resigned - fresh ones have been installed, and a sad number have paid the debt of nature. All the subjects connected with these events have been carefully investigated by the Author with scrupulous attention to accuracy, and he trusts his readers will favourably appreciate his labours." The Author's additions to this second edition amount to nearly 10,000 words - of small and often trivial detail; and the sum effect of them is to render the book verbose and tedious. In the first edition Cecil set out to write a conspectus of foxhunting, and admirably he succeeded: in the second edition he lost sight of his original design and, being anxious only to bring the book up-to-date, expanded it into a voluminous catalogue of masters. The result is that the second edition is neither so readable nor, to-day, useful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of an Old Sportsman, Vol. 1 of 2 On those subjects which I cannot altogether treat from experience, such as falconry, hawking, and deer stalking, I have consulted several old works, more especially Blome, who wrote in the latter end of the seventeenth century, and also standard modern works. I am likewise indebted for much useful information and anecdote to some of my sporting friends, amongst whom I may class General Shaw Kennedy, who practised hawking in Ayrshire, many years ago, when a considerable part of that county was unen closed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Victor Brooke, Sportsman and Naturalist: A Memoir of His Life and Extracts From His Letters and Journals IN undertaking to write a Memoir of the late Sir Victor Brooke, coupled with extracts from his letters and diaries relating to travel and sporting adventures, I have not been actuated by the feeling that I possess any special qualification for the task, except that of an intimate friendship extending over twenty years. With the slight literary advantages which I possess, that friendship, close as it had been, would not have been sufficient in itself to have induced me to attempt the onerous work, had not his widow urged me to do so, and expressed, with other relations, her Opinion that my knowledge of his life and character, and the personal affection I bore him, would perhaps enable me to do more justice to his memory than any one else could have done, even though armed with better literary credentials. However that may be, I trust those friends and such of the public as read these pages will find much to interest them; and when interest is found wanting, the fault will lie with the biographer rather than with the subject of these memoirs. Download or read book A Sportsman at Large Classic Reprint written by Harding Edward De Fonglanque Cox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sportsman at Large Racing but my chief activities with fur, feather and fin have been set forth herein. I can only hope and trust that such rambling reminiscences as have been conjured up by sweet and bitter memories, will serve to cause some slight interest and amusement to those readers who patronize these pages; albeit I shall deem myself exceedingly lucky if I escape a charge of monotony and reiteration, pitfalls which have beset me constantly whilst stringing together a story which is no story at all, but simply a bunch of incidents depicted in fantastic mono chrome. The shooting of bird or beast the hooking, playing and landing of a fish the details of a coursing thrill, and the excitements of a bumping race, afford the author very few materials with which to elaborate his colour scheme for the reason that each and all of these ventures - in their respective spheres - bear a striking family likeness to one another.. Such as they are, here they are. I can only beg for the same kindly indulgence that has been meted out to my other modest ventures with the pen.
