Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs, Journal, and Correspondence of Thomas Moore, Vol. 4 September lst, 1822. The Bryans called for Bessy in the morning, to go see the Rosiere, at Suresne. Dined with them: a Frenchman of the party, a Royalist, who told of a girl he walked with last year, at the bal masque, being arrested while with him, for having a tri-colour ribbon on her gown; and (as he since found out) impri soned six months; no other offence, and it was by chance the poor girl put on the ribbon. Book Thomas Moore and Romantic Inspiration

Download or read book Thomas Moore and Romantic Inspiration written by Sarah McCleave and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-18 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by internationally established scholars of Thomas Moore’s music, poetry, and prose writing, Thomas Moore and Romantic Inspiration is a collection of twelve essays and a timely response to significant new biographical, historiographical and editorial work on Moore. This collection reflects the rich variety of cutting-edge work being done on this significant and prolific figure. Sarah McCleave and Brian Caraher have contributed an introduction that positions Moore in his own time (1800-1850), addresses subsequent neglect in the twentieth century, and contextualises the contemporary re-evaluation of Thomas Moore as a figure of considerable interdisciplinary artistic and cultural significance. The contributions to this collection establish Moore’s importance in the fields of Neoclassical and Romantic lyricism, musical performance, song-writing, postcolonial criticism, Orientalism and biographical writing— as well as defining the significance of his voice as an engaged social and political commentator of a strongly cosmopolitan and pluralistic inclination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes particular patterns of nationalist self-configuration and nationalist uses of memory, counter-memory, and historical amnesia in Ireland from roughly around the time of the emergence of a broad-based non-sectarian Irish nationalist platform in the late eighteenth century (the Society of United Irishmen) until Ireland’s partition and the founding of the Irish Free State in 1922. In approaching Irish nationalism through the particular historical lens of “Iran,” this book underscores the fact that Irish nationalism during this period (and even earlier) always utilized a historical paradigm that grounded Anglo-Irish encounters and Irish nationalism in the broader world history, a process that I term “worlding of Ireland.” In effect, Irish nationalism was always politically and culturally cosmopolitan in outlook in some formulations, even in the case of many nationalists who resorted to insular and narrowly defined exclusionary ethnic and/or religious formulations of the Irish “nation.” Irish nationalists, as nationalists in many other parts of the world, recurrently imagined their own history either in contrast to or as reflected in, the histories of peoples and lands elsewhere, even while claiming the historical uniqueness of the Irish experience. Present in a wide range of Irish nationalist political, cultural, and historical utterances were assertions of past and/or present affinities with other peoples and lands.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs, Journal, and Correspondence of Thomas Moore, Vol. 2 I did not intend to have any communication with you till Friday, but as I have been requested by the Coopers to send the inclosed, I must give you the trouble of for warding them; and I think I shall not inflict another packet on my friend Lord Glenbervie till this day week, when you shall have the two jobs of the present week. I was very much delighted to receive your two last letters, though I did not answer the one about your excursion to France so soon as you seemed to wish, concluding that there is as yet no hurry, though certainly I have no doubt of a peace taking place very soon, and then, my dear sir, after I have seen my poor Bessy safe over her July production, I shall be at your command for a short musical trip at a day's notice: besides the pleasure of our being together, I think it is quite necessary for you to have some one with you that speaks French, and I have but little doubt that we shall make the excursion tell. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first president to occupy the White House for an entire term, Thomas Jefferson shaped the president’s residence, literally and figuratively, more than any of its other occupants. Remarkably enough, however, though many books have immortalized Jefferson’s Monticello, none has been devoted to the vibrant look, feel, and energy of his still more famous and consequential home from 1801 to 1809. In Monticello on the Potomac, James B. Conroy, author of the award-winning Lincoln’s White House offers a vivid, highly readable account of how life was lived in Jefferson’s White House and the young nation’s rustic capital.
