Book A Memoir of Mrs Margaret Wilson

Download or read book A Memoir of Mrs Margaret Wilson written by John Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memoir of Mrs. Margaret Wilson: Of the Scottish Mission, Bombay; Including Extracts From Her Letters and Journals The beginning of my intercourse with Margaret was at an early period of our existence, - at that bright season, when all looks fair and attractive, and life seems to promise a succession of enjoyments, which are without limit and without end. Bu ere she had time to learn from experience that such hopes are fallacious, God had graciously touched her heart, and enabled her, like Mary of old, to choose the better part. She chose it with all the warmth of young affection, for her heart was full of sensibility and tenderness. Her dispositions were a fine com bination of warmth of affection and disinterestedness of feeling 3 her talents were of the first order 3 and her after acquirements were of such a description as brought them into full play, and formed a character at once lovely and attractive. But she brought all to the foot of the Cross, and for a time, with weep ing and mourning, she was made to experience what it is to be in bitterness through manifold temptations. But in all this, the Almighty was only preparing the ground for the mighty harvest it was afterwards to yield, when she became as a well watered garden, drinking in the dews of heaven, and deriving strength and spiritual vigour from the Sun of Righteousness. Book The Autobiography of Margaret Oliphant

Download or read book The Autobiography of Margaret Oliphant written by Margaret Oliphant and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2002-01-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the death of Margaret Oliphant—the prolific nineteenth-century novelist, biographer, essayist, reviewer, and prominent voice on the “woman question”—two well-intending relatives took the autobiographical manuscripts she composed over a thirty-year period, and recomposed them to suit the model of a conventional memoir. In the process, they suppressed more than a quarter of the material. Based on the original manuscripts, the Broadview edition now makes available the missing text in its original order, and the restored Autobiography of Margaret Oliphant portrays a woman of scathing irony, anger, and grief. Part of Broadview’s Nineteenth-Century British Autobiographies series, this edition also includes extensive excerpts from Oliphant’s diaries.

Book My Life in Houses

Download or read book My Life in Houses written by Margaret Forster and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘I was born on 25th May, 1938, in the front bedroom of a house in Orton Road, a house on the outer edges of Raffles, a council estate. I was a lucky girl.’ So begins Margaret Forster’s journey through the houses she’s lived in, from that sparkling new council house, to her beloved London home of today. This is not a book about bricks and mortar though. This is a book about what houses are to us, the effect they have on the way we live our lives and the changing nature of our homes: from blacking grates and outside privies; to cities dominated by bedsits and lodgings; to the houses of today converted back into single dwellings. Finally, it is a gently insistent, personal inquiry into the meaning of home.

Book Welsh missionaries and British imperialism

Download or read book Welsh missionaries and British imperialism written by Andrew May and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1841, the Welsh sent their first missionary, Thomas Jones, to evangelise the tribal peoples of the Khasi Hills of north-east India. This book follows Jones from rural Wales to Cherrapunji, the wettest place on earth and now one of the most Christianised parts of India. As colonised colonisers, the Welsh were to have a profound impact on the culture and beliefs of the Khasis. The book also foregrounds broader political, scientific, racial and military ideologies that mobilised the Khasi Hills into an interconnected network of imperial control. Its themes are universal: crises of authority, the loneliness of geographical isolation, sexual scandal, greed and exploitation, personal and institutional dogma, individual and group morality. Written by a direct descendant of Thomas Jones, it makes a significant contribution in orienting the scholarship of imperialism to a much-neglected corner of India, and will appeal to students of the British imperial experience more broadly.
