Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir and Correspondence of General James Stuart Fraser of the Madras Army During my father's lifetime, I published a historical sketch of the Hyderabad State, under the title of Our Faiflzful Ally the Nizam.1 In the Preface to that book I mentioned that I was not then at liberty to use docu ments in my possession throwing much light on our poli tical relations with Hyderabad. And particularly on that very important measure, the assignment of the Berar Provinces, but that at some future time that restriction would probably be removed. I was not then so fully informed as I am now, from the private correspondence between them, how widely the views of Lord Dalhousie and General Fraser diverged} nor did I then understand how much my lamented father's name had come to be identified, very inaccurately and unfairly, as a result or the oficially published misrepresentation which I shall have to correct, with the assignment or sequestration of the Nizam's Berar Provinces. The restriction as to the publication of my father's papers has now been finally removed by his demise, and I am unwilling any longer to incur the responsibility of withholding from English statesmen and the public generally the exclusive and otherwise unattainable and private information contained in this book, and which, I may add, I have refused, very much against my own interests, to plate at the discretion and disposal of parties in England for publication. Colonial officials were convinced that itinerant preachers of jihad - whom they labelled 'Wahhabis' - were collaborating with Russian and Persian armies, and inspiring Muslim princes to revolt. Officials detained and interrogated Muslim travelers, conducted weapons inspections at princely forts, surveyed mosques, and ultimately annexed territories of the accused. Using untapped archival materials, Chandra Mallampalli describes how local intrigues, often having little to do with 'religion', manufactured belief in a global conspiracy against British rule. By skillfully narrating stories of the alleged conspirators, he shows how fears of the dreaded 'Wahhabi' sometimes prompted colonial authorities to act upon thin evidence, while also inspiring Muslim plots against princes not of their liking. At stake were not only questions about Muslim loyalty, but also the very ideals of a liberal empire.

Cooper combines an overview of Maratha military culture with a battle-by-battle analysis of the 1803 Anglo-Maratha Campaigns. Building on that foundation he challenges ethnocentric assumptions about British superiority in discipline, drill and technology. He argues that these campaigns, in which Arthur Wellesley served with distinction, represent the military high-water mark of the Marathas who posed the last serious opposition to the formation of the British Raj. Dr Cooper asserts that the real contest for India was never a single decisive battle for the subcontinent. Rather it turned on a complex social and political struggle for control of the South Asian military economy. The author shows that victory in 1803 hinged as much on finance, diplomacy, politics and intelligence as it did on battlefield manoeuvre and war itself.
