Book MELON FLY Bactrocera Cucurbitae Coquillett DIPTERA TEPHRITIDAE

Download or read book MELON FLY Bactrocera Cucurbitae Coquillett DIPTERA TEPHRITIDAE written by R. C. Jhala and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smooth gourd was found most preferred host for multiplication of Bactrocera cucurbitae. The fly was more active during July-August. Minimum temperature, relative humidity and mean vapour pressure affected the pest positively, while bright sunshine hours and vapour pressure deficit negatively. As B. cucurbitae increased, Dacus ciliatus decreased or vice versa. B. cucurbitae was dominant in bitter gourd, while D. ciliatus in small gourd. Marsdenia volubilis and ply as wood while ethanol and hexane as solvent were found most suitable for impregnation of cue lure. The optimum size for impregnation of cue lure in 1.2 cm thick plywood was found to be 3 x 3 cm. The plywood block impregnated with cue lure (ethanol + cue lure + dichlorvos in the ratio of 6:4:1) and sealed air tightly using aluminium foil can be stored for 2 months without significant adverse effect on fly catches. Green and Yellow coloured traps caught more flies. Mix bait of different ingredients was more attractive to B. cucurbitae as compared to bait of individual ingredient. Integration of male annihilation technique with bait application technique was found most effective strategy for management of B. cucurbitae.

Book Trapping and the Detection Control and Regulation of Tephritid Fruit Flies

Download or read book Trapping and the Detection Control and Regulation of Tephritid Fruit Flies written by Todd Shelly and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on four broad topics related to trapping of agriculturally important tephritid fruit flies, namely i) lures and traps, ii) invasion biology and detection of infestations, iii) attract and kill systems, and iv) trade regulations and risk assessment. This comprehensive structure progresses from the biological interaction between insect and lures/traps to the area-wide use of trapping systems to the utilization and impact of trapping data on international trade. The chapters include accounts of earlier research but are not simply compendia and instead evaluate past and current work as a tool for critical analysis and proposal of productive avenues for future work. At present there is no book available that deals with fruit fly trapping in such a broad context. Our book fills this gap and serves as a global reference for both those interested in fruit flies specifically as well as anyone dealing with the threat of invasive agricultural insects in general.

Book Guide for Establishing and Maintaining Pest Free Areas

Download or read book Guide for Establishing and Maintaining Pest Free Areas written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the Guide is to support national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) who wish to establish and maintain pest free areas (PFA) including places and/or production sites (PFPP and PFPS) as well as areas of low pest prevalence (ALPP). To facilitate an understanding of the processes to establish and maintain PFAs and ALPPs, a diagram in the form of a decision tree was constructed that identifies and outlines five general phases of programme development as follows: initiation, feasibility, establishment, maintenance, and market access phases. The guide is then divided into corresponding sections that describe what the key elements of each phase are, why these elements are important, what some of the common challenges and pitfalls are, and factors that may influence the success of the different phases such as budget stability, public outreach, availability of good survey and control tools, and open engagement with stakeholders and trading partners. By providing a deeper understanding of the factors that should be considered when establishing a PFA, PFPP, PFPS or ALPP the guide aims to overcome the challenges and maximize the impact of these efforts to the benefit of all parties. The guide concludes by providing a number of case studies from around the world that highlight successful PFA and ALPP programmes and how they deal with particular key issues. This guide contains current experience and the most advanced phytosanitary procedures in the implementation of PFA and ALPP, however, it is subjected to revision and updates as new developments are made available.

Book Fruit Fly Research and Development in Africa Towards a Sustainable Management Strategy to Improve Horticulture

Download or read book Fruit Fly Research and Development in Africa Towards a Sustainable Management Strategy to Improve Horticulture written by Sunday Ekesi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horticultural sector presents many opportunities for economic development and improving livelihood of growers but several factors constrain production and limit the potential for trade of fruits and vegetables. Tephritid fruit flies constitute a major constraint. They cause enormous losses through direct feeding damage and loss of market opportunities through imposition of quarantine restrictions by importing countries to prevent entry and their establishment. In Africa, several native (Ceratitis and Dacus spp) and exotic (Bactrocera and Zeugodacus spp.) species inflict considerable losses to horticulture causing losses ranging from 30-90%. Over the past 10 years of R&D, extensive information has been generated on bioecology and management of several native and exotic fruit flies in Africa. While several specific reviews have addressed various aspects of the biology, ecology and management of economically important tephritid fruit flies; coverage of African native species has been limited largely to Bactrocera oleae and Ceratitis capitata – which are not economically important species in many Africa countries. Indeed, no book exist that have explicitly addressed economically important African fruit flies and none of the various reviews, have specifically focused on the status of the bioecology, economic impact and management of exotic and native fruit flies – including several potentially invasive Dacus species attacking vegetables - in Africa. This book consolidates this status of knowledge and socio-economic impact of various intervention techniques that are currently being applied across Africa. The timing of the book is especially pertinent due to the changing fruit fly landscape in Africa – caused by arrivals of the highly destructive alien invasives (Bactrocera dorsalis, B. zonata, and B. latifrons) - and the priorities African countries have placed recently on export of fruits and vegetables to international markets. This is an important reference material for researchers, academics and students that are keen at improving horticulture and enhancing food and nutrition security in Africa and beyond.
