I wrote this book as an inner look on how I discovered ”her.” Growing up in predominately white spaces as a women of color it is hard to define what “beauty“ looks like for you. Social media, television and even those around me not positive representations of what black beauty looks like. It took years for me to construct a healthy live for myself. My hopes for this book is that it is one that will help women of color on their journey to inner peace, a deeper love for oneself, and tapping into their inner Queen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first transnational, feminist studies of Canada’s black beauty culture and the role that media, retail, and consumers have played in its development, Beauty in a Box widens our understanding of the politics of black hair. The book analyzes advertisements and articles from media—newspapers, advertisements, television, and other sources—that focus on black communities in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, and Calgary. The author explains the role local black community media has played in the promotion of African American–owned beauty products; how the segmentation of beauty culture (i.e., the sale of black beauty products on store shelves labelled “ethnic hair care”) occurred in Canada; and how black beauty culture, which was generally seen as a small niche market before the 1970s, entered Canada’s mainstream by way of department stores, drugstores, and big-box retailers. Beauty in a Box uses an interdisciplinary framework, engaging with African American history, critical race and cultural theory, consumer culture theory, media studies, diasporic art history, black feminism, visual culture, film studies, and political economy to explore the history of black beauty culture in both Canada and the United States.

Book excerpt: Most people no longer have the time or patience to experiment with avocado and cucumber potions, meditative techniques that promise "inner beauty" or lengthy surgeries that require time off from work. The good news is that medicine has caught up to our needs. Today instant beauty is available to everyone who has no more than a lunch break to fix this, to alter that and get the looks they've always wanted. How is this possible? - Big procedures have gotten smaller. Lasers target problem areas with amazing precision, and endoscopic surgery performed through a microscopic incision result in less pain and scarring and much quicker recovery. - More than half of all cosmetic procedures today are performed in a doctor's office instead of the hospital, resulting in more comfort, convenience and privacy, as well as less risk of infection - Anesthesia is today lighter; many procedures require no anesthesia at all, while others require only local numbing, resulting in much greater safety. Instant Beauty provides step-by-step methods for evaluating one's needs and for seeking the most qualified practitioner and the safest facility. It spells out each procedure - what it entails, who is and is not a prime candidate, and how much it costs.

Book Taking Our Place in History

Download or read book Taking Our Place in History written by Girls Write Now and published by The Feminist Press at CUNY. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The award-winning annual anthology from New York City’s first and only writing and mentoring organization for girls and gender-expansive teens. What is it like growing up in New York City as a teen in 2020? This book invites you into their homes and families, their schools and neighborhoods, their hearts, hopes, and fears. Enter a world where clay creatures take on aluminum oppressors. Get thrown against an elevator wall in the midst of a horror story. Go backstage with a rock band, say goodbye to relatives as you start a new life, stand with an engineer solving a coding problem. Experience tragedy in a mosque, feel the wounds of slavery, know the terror of glass shattering in a World War II village, and see how this next generation of leaders looks to the past and writes a better future for us all. For more than two decades, the nationally award-winning nonprofit Girls Write Now has broken down the barriers of gender, race, age, and poverty, elevating the voices of writers who are too often not heard—or worse, silenced. With mentors by their sides, the girls and gender-nonconforming youth tackle climate change, racism, sexism, rejection, immigration, and friendship—and take their place in history. This book is their testament. “The written word has often been the only outlet for women and girls to express their authentic stories and unique voices in so many societies across the globe. Girls Write Now harnesses that power, nurtures it, and amplifies it so that these singular voices can become generations.” —Robin Thede, creator, writer, executive producer and star of A Black Lady Sketch Show

She has two loving parents who teach her to always love herself and her magical skin complexion. After going to school and being teased, she starts to doubt what her parents told her about the unique glow of her skin. She is then educated about the power of her melanin, how it protects her from the Sun, and learns that it is one of her many superpowers! This is the first book of the Princess series. Princess and The Power of Melanin was created to uplift young girls and combat the colorism that often exists in the World. It is important to prevent young girls from viewing their melanin as a negative attribute. Sometimes kids can be mean to each other and we want this book to serve as a tool to give young girls so much confidence that no bully can faze them. We want the story of Princess to remind every melanated girl to love themselves! This book was authored by Jeremy C. McCool and Dr. Anthony McBride.
