The features of the disease include weakness, sensory disturbance, pain, and impairment of balance. Paul's book tells the story of the impact of the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis on a young fit man. It chronicles his determination to realise his potential in life by utilising his personal strengths and drawing on the ethos of 'smiling through adversity' that was instilled during his training as a Royal Marines Commando. I hope that his book will serve as an inspiration to all, but in particular to those who are challenged by multiple sclerosis or other chronic disease in early adult life. Sir Ranulph Fiennes

Download or read book Mega Weird written by Nicholas Megalis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of hilarious short stories from twenty-five year old Internet sensation Nicholas Megalis on his distinctively weird life and childhood, fully illustrated by Tom Megalis, his celebrated artist and animator dad. From Internet sensation Nicholas Megalis, comes Mega Weird, a collection of hilarious short stories on life as an anxiety-fueled artist, musician, and proudly weird dude. Raised in a ridiculous family of artists, Greek immigrants, and all-around weirdos, Megalis has had a strange and beautiful ride (and has consumed an ungodly amount of spanakopita). Mega Weird is an illustrated journal of Megalis’s twenty-five years on this planet—borderline fireworks pyromania, chain-smoking at age seven, psychotic magic trick obsessions, the perils of being a thirteen-year-old boy, a month-long band tour fueled by Taco Bell, caffeine, and guitars—each story accompanied by original art from his celebrated artist and animator dad, Tom Megalis. Mega Weird is an assurance that it's okay to be different. In fact, it's essential. Megalis wasn't good at sports and could barely tie his shoes until he was twenty, but that's fine. Who cares? He’s proud to be weird. And you should be too. Life is insane, life is great. Thank God for rock and roll.

Download or read book Stubborn Attachments written by Tyler Cowen and published by Stripe Press. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a bestselling author and economist, a contemporary moral case for economic growth—and a dose of inspiration and optimism about our future possibilities. Growth is good. Through history, economic growth, in particular, has alleviated human misery, improved human happiness and opportunity, and lengthened human lives. Wealthier societies are more stable, offer better living standards, produce better medicines, and ensure greater autonomy, greater fulfillment, and more sources of fun. If we want to continue on our trends of growth, and the overwhelmingly positive outcomes for societies that come with it, every individual must become more concerned with the welfare of those around us. So, how do we proceed? Tyler Cowen, in a culmination of 20 years of thinking and research, provides a roadmap for moving forward. In this new book, Stubborn Attachments: A Vision for a Society of Free, Prosperous, and Responsible Individuals, Cowen argues that our reason and common sense can help free us of the faulty ideas that hold us back as people and as a society. Stubborn Attachments, at its heart, makes the contemporary moral case for economic growth and delivers a great dose of inspiration and optimism about our future possibilities. As a means of practicing the altruism that Stubborn Attachments argues for, Tyler Cowen is donating all earnings from this book to a man he met in Ethiopia earlier this year with aspirations to open his own travel business.

Download or read book The All Heaven written by Charles Mazhar Merhebi and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-03-04 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The All: Who Is Who? Who Am I? Who Are You? is a creative writing of subconscious fact in higher states of consciousness, through which Merhebi presents his redefinition of the philosophy of feeling and understanding of the universe. This is an ideal gift to the one who has everything and a treasure to the one who has nothing. In over one hundred chapters, he shares a very important world and entertains our minds and souls. Merhebi emerges as a thinker-feeler, doodler, humorist, lover, and soul handler, and above all, he provokes your mind. He expresses his feelings and ideas in a variety of ways poetically, theoretically, and mathematically but always challenges the readers feelings and beliefs on politics, religion, philosophy, personal self-sufficiency, trade, love, discrimination, parenthood, domination, relationships, time and space, and the structure of the universe. His self-professed aim for this book is to generate a theory of the geometric forms of the invisible common sense logic nothing to be truth. He proposes that as humans of the day, we believe in what is beyond our knowledge capacity, and we function by need. He sees the challenge as one of bringing what we feel in line with what we know, harmoniously accommodating our conscious knowledge with the needs of our subconscious feelings.

Download or read book The City as a Global Political Actor written by Stijn Oosterlynck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book engages with the thorny question of global urban political agency. It critically assesses the now popular statement that in the context of paralysed and failing nation state governments, cities can and will provide leadership in addressing global challenges. Cities can act politically on the global scale, but the analysis of global urban political agency needs to be firmly embedded in the field of urban studies. Collectively, the chapters in this volume contextualize urban agency in time and space and pluralize it by looking at how urban agency is nurtured through coalitions between a wide range of public and private actors. The authors develop and critically assess the conceptual underpinnings of the notion of global urban political agency from a variety of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives. The second part contains several (theoretically informed) empirical analyses of global urban political agency in cities around the globe. This book geographically expands analysis by looking beyond global cities in diverse contexts. It is highly recommended reading for scholars in the fields of international relations and urban studies who are looking for an interdisciplinary and empirically grounded understanding of global urban political agency, in a diversity of contexts and a plurality of forms.
Download or read book The New Urban Crisis written by Richard Florida and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the young, educated, and affluent have surged back into cities, reversing decades of suburban flight and urban decline. And yet all is not well, Richard Florida argues in The New Urban Crisis. Florida, one of the first scholars to anticipate this back-to-the-city movement in his groundbreaking The Rise of the Creative Class, demonstrates how the same forces that power the growth of the world's superstar cities also generate their vexing challenges: gentrification, unaffordability, segregation, and inequality. Meanwhile, many more cities still stagnate, and middle-class neighborhoods everywhere are disappearing. Our winner-take-all cities are just one manifestation of a profound crisis in today's urbanized knowledge economy. A bracingly original work of research and analysis, The New Urban Crisis offers a compelling diagnosis of our economic ills and a bold prescription for more inclusive cities capable of ensuring growth and prosperity for all.

Download or read book Kim Ki duk written by Hye Seung Chung and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the controversial motion pictures written and directed by the independent filmmaker Kim Ki-duk, one of the most acclaimed Korean auteurs in the English-speaking world. Propelled by underdog protagonists who can only communicate through shared corporeal pain and extreme violence, Kim's graphic films have been classified by Western audiences as belonging to sensationalist East Asian "extreme" cinema, and Kim has been labeled a "psychopath" and "misogynist" in South Korea. Drawing upon both Korean-language and English-language sources, Hye Seung Chung challenges these misunderstandings, recuperating Kim's oeuvre as a therapeutic, yet brutal cinema of Nietzschean ressentiment (political anger and resentment deriving from subordination and oppression). Chung argues that the power of Kim's cinema lies precisely in its ability to capture, channel, and convey the raw emotions of protagonists who live on the bottom rungs of Korean society. She provides historical and postcolonial readings of victimization and violence in Kim's cinema, which tackles such socially relevant topics as national division in Wild Animals and The Coast Guard and U.S. military occupation in Address Unknown. She also explores the religious and spiritual themes in Kim's most recent works, which suggest possibilities of reconciliation and transcendence.
