Book Fair Access to Higher Education

Download or read book Fair Access to Higher Education written by Anna Mountford-Zimdars and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does "fairness" mean internationally in terms of access to higher education? Increased competition for places in elite universities has prompted a worldwide discussion regarding the fairness of student admission policies. Despite budget cuts from governments--and increasing costs for students--competition is fierce at the most prestigious institutions. Universities, already under stress, face a challenge in balancing institutional research goals, meeting individual aspirations for upward social mobility, and promoting the democratic ideal of equal opportunity. Fair Access to Higher Education addresses this challenge from a broad, transnational perspective. The chapters in this volume contribute to our thinking and reflection on policy developments and also offer new empirical findings about patterns of advantage and disadvantage in higher education access. Bringing together insights drawn from a variety of fields, including philosophy, linguistics, social psychology, sociology, and public policy, the book sheds light on how "fairness" in university admissions has been articulated worldwide.

Book Equal Access to Courts Under Esa and Citizen s Fair Hearing Act

Download or read book Equal Access to Courts Under Esa and Citizen s Fair Hearing Act written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Equal Access to Courts Under Esa and Citizen's Fair Hearing Act: Hearing Before the Committee on Resources, House of Representatives, One Hundred Fourth Congress, Second Session on Equal Access to Courts Under the Endangered Species Act and H. R. 3862 Thank you, Madam Chairman. I am pleased to be here today. Let me begin with a little bit of caution, concerning the fact that there are some pending court cases, particularly the Bennett case in the Supreme Court, involved here. The Solicitor General of the United States, as you probably know, sets the litigating position of the us. Government. And the Solicitor General has a wise and long standing policy about not commenting on the details Of pend ing cases. That's why he doesn't give press conferences and the like. He doesn't want to be accused of trying our cases in the Con gress or in the newspapers. So I'll have to be very cautious about commenting on details of pending litigation. I'm certainly happy to be here to share our views on this legislation and our views on the general approach about how the esa ought to be applied in litiga tion under the government, but I do want to put that caution in the record. The basic position Of the United States is simple: that litigants who meet the Constitutional standards for going to court ought to be able to take us to court, to challenge our decisions implementing the esa or any other statute. And the playing field should be as level as possible, so that no matter where you come from, or what property interest you have or don't have, whether you're environ mentalist, regulated industry or whatever, you ought to be able to and, generally speaking, are able to take us to court to challenge our actions. In fact, we're involved at any one time in about different lawsuits challenging our decisions under various laws, and the vast majority Of those are brought by people with economic interests. In the Endangered Species Act in particular, there have been any number of important recent cases that have been brought by regulated industry. Mr. Macleod referred specifically to the Sweet Home case. That's probably the most important case ever litigated on the Endangered Species Act, and was brought by local governments and timber industry associations, and litigated on the merits to conclusion in the us. Book Providing Equal Access to Education

Download or read book Providing Equal Access to Education written by Narelle Jones and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The People's Republic of China has seen a dramatic growth in its economy in recent years. It has a rapidly increasing population of approximately 1.2 billion people, though the population is still largely rural with about 80% of people living outside urban areas. China in its Education Law (1995) restated its commitment to universal education. In the last twenty years it has achieved considerable success in increasing its education participation rates. However, despite the rhetoric about equality of access there are signs that indicate not everyone has the same educational opportunities. This paper describes the current education system and outlines some of the disparities that exist and describes how Chinese Government policies are affecting universal access to education. The paper's conclusions are largely optimistic in spite of the tremendous difficulties that policy makers face. [This paper was published in: "Selected Papers from the 24th Annual ANZCIES Conference" (Dilemmas and Responsibilities for Educators), Bardon Professional Centre, Brisbane, Queensland, from December 1-4, pp. 133-144.].

Download or read book Women in Higher Education written by JoAnn DiGeorgio-Lutz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-08-30 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More women are receiving advanced degrees and ascending to the ranks of deans, provosts, and presidents, but despite gains in advancing gender equality, efforts at true empowerment are still met with significant resistance within academia. The contributors to this collection are committed to promoting the issue of gender and empowering women in higher education. The approach of this book is both theoretical and applied. On one level it evaluates pedagogy from the perspective of what we teach, how we teach, and curriculum development that enables and empowers women. On the other level it examines the institutional barriers that continue to exist that thwart the educational development of women while also examining the areas in which institutional support does promote efforts toward change. Women are the growing majority population, yet women in higher education are not provided an equal education. This book includes strategies for change, teaching suggestions, and curriculum development ideas.
